One Day of a Middle School Student

My name is Jill Green. I am a teacher of a middle school in England. 1 want to tell the school day of my school to you.

{#blank#}1{#/blank#}The first lesson is at 9:20 a.m. It lasts(持续) an hour. The students can have a break(休息) from 10:20 a. m. to 10:45 a. m. Most girls like to talk, but most boys like to play ball games.{#blank#}2{#/blank#}After the break, students have the second lesson. During(在.....期间) the first quarter of the lesson, teachers usually have a test(测 试)for the students.{#blank#}3{#/blank#}

Lunch time is from 12:00 to 1:10 p. m. All students have their lunch at school. After lunch, students like to go to some clubs. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} They can also watch TV, play games or tell stories in the clubs.

Students read some books and have the last lesson in the afternoon.{#blank#}5{#/blank#}Then students go home.

The past summer, Elaine had spent long hours working in the McMurdo research station. Her job was to look after the fire extinguishers (灭火器) and fire alarms. But on her days off, Elaine loved to explore (探索) ice and caves outside the 1 . 

With winter coming, she'd go back home soon. Elaine wanted to do one more thing—to see a penguin closely before 2 the research station. She had heard stories about how people 3 penguins and got close to them. 

One night after dinner, someone said there was a penguin alone on the far side of the station. Hearing that, Elaine was 4 and rushed out, hoping to get a closer look. The day was sunny, but Elaine knew the 5 could change in a moment. A sudden storm could drop the temperature by 50℃ in just a few minutes. Elaine didn't think about the 6 . All she could think of was the penguin. 

Walking on the ice alone, Elaine realized how 7 she was because she didn't even bring her warm hat or emergency radio. Suddenly, a strong wind knocked her off her feet. Then she saw something blue, the colour of danger? It came from a big 8 below her. She was lying on the thin ice. Nobody would ever find her 9 she broke through and fell into the hole. 

With the wind gone, Elaine felt someone near. She couldn't believe her eyes. It was an emperor penguin! The penguin stood watching 10 . Seeing Elaine move, the bird walked away, then stopped and looked back. It seemed to be inviting her to 11 . As Elaine thought about 12 she could deal with the situation, she heard the ice breaking. She decided to trust (信任) this bird. She spread (展开) her arms on the ice like wings, keeping her body flat, and 13 towards the penguin. Ahead, the penguin led the way. Elaine went after the penguin's path slowly. After a long time, with one last pull of her arms, Elaine stood on the ice 14 . 

Her penguin guide would join her group for the long winter ahead. Thanks to that bird's 15 , Elaine would head home with a story that she'd never forget.

"Tom? Are you in bed yet?" called Mrs White. There was no answer. Mrs White put down her book and went to her 14-year-old sons room. Tom was sitting in front of a bright computer screen on which a motorbike was running fast.

"Oh, Tom. You're still playing that computer game. You must stop now, because it's half past eleven. If you don't go to bed at once, you'll be very tired tomorrow." said Mrs White.

"But I've nearly won the game." Tom said to Mrs White. She could see the excitement on his face. she sat beside him and said, "You're always playing on the computer. You spend more time on this machine than on your homework."

Today more and more families have computers. Parents hope computers can help their children improve their study at school. But many of their children use computers to play games, listen to songs and watch videos instead of studying. We often see that net bars are crowded with people, especially young boys. They spend a lot of time and money competing(竞争) with the computerized(用计算机控制的) machines. The more they lose, the more they want to win. The result is that they don't want to work or study.

In some countries, even scientists hate computers. They say computers cause millions of bring them a lot of trouble. Computer game addiction(瘾) is a serious problem in social life. Something should be done to solve the problem.

Last year, we took a trip to New York City. When we 1 our hotel, it was around 1 a.m. My son Joseph looked out at the lights of Times Square and said he wanted to go 2 . I told him it was too 3 to go out, but he kept looking out of the window and said, "Just for two minutes." 

My wife and I just looked at each other, 4 and said "Two minutes". We got 5 and walked to the center of Times Square. When we got there, my son pointed at the lights and said "Dad, look!" and then started to fall asleep.

It took us 20 minutes to 6 the 20 seconds we spent outside, but it made our son happy and that meant a lot to us. That night, I learned a lesson about 7 . We sometimes can have happy moments (时刻) in our lives, 8 we often find an excuse to do something else. 

Because of my son, I learned that I am the 9 enemy (敌人) to my own happiness. Happiness is a door that is always 10 . However, we are the ones who have to decide if we are going to walk through the door.

As a little girl when I heard my sister talk about her life-changing term abroad in Paris, it became my goal to visit it one day. When my daily life in New Jersey seemed boring, I often 1 about walking around the streets of Paris. Luckily, with our financial (财务的) situation2 , European travel became a reality. 

Travelling to a European country with my3  was exciting, but it would not be complete without facing problems and figuring them out. 

We had just started to get4  familiar (熟悉的) with the Paris subway system. Since using it was very difficult, we were walking slowly until we5 the subway was about to leave. As soon as I6 , the doors shut with my mom on the other side. I did not have my cell phone, neither of us could speak a word of7  , and we had no idea how to connect each other. My mom and I, who were both8  , began to knock heavily on the doors. Suddenly, a man with a very puzzled look on his face walked over to the doors and simply9 them. My mom stepped on and we hugged10  we just met each other for the first time in years. A huge sense of11  washed over us. 

12 , my mom and I were able to find all those tourist places we wanted to go. We began to explore the neighborhood we were staying in, such as finding our favorite breakfast café13  walking to museums. The trip to Paris was not just14  because of the beautiful clothes or the sidewalk cafés, but it also taught me it is okay to run into15  when trying to explore an unfamiliar area, and if you keep working, you will improve.
