Once a scholar (学者) is going to a place by boat. The boatman set sail (启航) in his boat and the boat was moving slowly. The wind was 1 softly (轻柔地). There were beautiful sounds of waves (浪花) and hundreds of birds were flying in the sky. The scholar was feeling 2 . He was very proud of (对……感到自豪) his learning. He asked the boatman if he knew 3 the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. The old man 4 , "No." The scholar told the boatman that his life was 5 .
The boatman said 6 but looked at the scholar. After a while, the scholar asked again if the boatman read 7 before. The boatman politely answered that he never read any book, so he knew nothing about geography. The scholar then told him that half of his life was wasted.
Then the sky became covered with dark clouds. Soon a terrible storm came. The waves were beating 8 against the boat. The scholar became very scared. Seeing this, the boatman asked him if he knew how to swim. The scholar said, "I read many books on swimming and know a lot about it, 9 I never tried swimming." The boatman then told him 10 , "Then you waste your whole life, because the boat is going to sink (下沉)!"
When Sally was a child, she went to the city park with her mom on a sunny morning. She felt very unhappy. Her mom saw that and asked why. Sally told her mother that she felt so sorry to see so much rubbish on the ground.
Her mom looked around. There were pieces of paper, boxes, glass bottles and a lot of other rubbish everywhere. "What can we do?" asked Sally sadly. "I'm sure you will think of something," said her mom.
As soon as Sally got home with her mom, she painted a picture of the park and wrote a sign in large black letters at the top of the picture. The sign said, "PLEASE KEEP OUR PARK CLEAN". Later, she took plenty of bags and went back to the park with her mom. Sally put up her picture on a big rubbish box.
The children at the park ran over to see what was going on. Sally handed each of them a bag. "Let's clean up this place," said Sally. Then they began to pick up the rubbish, talking and laughing. Soon, all the bags were full.
Then Sally's mom led them to put the rubbish into different kinds of rubbish boxes. When they looked at the clean park, they all had a strong feeling of satisfaction.
From then on, Sally has been keeping doing the cleaning and sorting (分类) rubbish. More and more people joined her to play a part in environment protection.
Kanchha Sherpa (夏尔巴人) is ninety-one years old now (2024). He was a member of the famous team of 35 to reach the top of Mount Qomolangma (珠穆朗玛峰) on May 29, 1953. The team was the first group to the top of the mountain. And Kanchha is the last surviving (幸存的) member of them.
Kanchha is furious (暴怒的) at the situation of the mountain now, saying it is now crowded and dirty. "They should not be dirtying the mountain. It is our biggest god and they should not be dirtying the gods," said Kanchha. "Qomolangma is the biggest god for the Sherpas but people smoke and eat meat and throw rubbish on the mountain."
Since Kanchha's first climb, thousands have climbed up the world's tallest mountain. More visitors come, and also some climbers live on the mountain for months at a time. They bring a lot of rubbish. That worries people. There are rules in place that climbers must clean up their own rubbish and equipment (装备). But that doesn't produce (产生) a successful result.
"It is very dirty now. People throw wrappings (包装材料) after eating food. Who is going to pick them up now?" said Kanchha. "It would be better for the mountain to reduce (减少) the number of climbers. Right now there is always a big crowd of people at the top of Qomolangma."
Spring Clean-up Day, Rockland It's the best way to welcome spring and to help to clean up the town we all live in! Here in Rockland we have a Spring Clean-up Day every year in May. Spring Clean-up Day this year will be on May 20th. It will start with a town clean-up at 8 o'clock in the morning, and a tree planting activity in Rockland Park is to follow in the afternoon. One thousand young trees are sure to make it greener and prettier. We will divide the people coming to help into eight teams for eight different areas. As usual, we will provide gloves, rubbish bags and other cleaning tools. You will also get free lunches and T-shirts when the clean-up ends at noon. We are going to have a competition to see which team can pick up the most rubbish. Bring your kids with you. It is a great chance to teach them to care about the environment around us. We have free drinks and chocolate candies for the children. Two places to meet: At the gate of Rockland Park, or at the corner of Palace Street and North Street. Before she had drunk half the bottle, she found her head pressing against the ceiling (天花板), and had to stop to save her neck from being broken. She hastily put down the bottle, saying to herself, "That's quite enough. I can't get out at the door. I hope I will not grow any more."
However, it was too late to wish that! She went on growing, and growing, and very soon she had to kneel down on the floor. In another minute, she tried to lie down with one elbow against the door, and the other arm curling round her head. Still she went on growing. She put one arm out of the window and one foot up the chimney, and said to herself, "Now I can do no more, whatever happens. What will become of me?"
Luckily for Alice, the little magic bottle had now had its full effect, and she grew no larger. Still it was very uncomfortable, and there seemed to be no chance for her to get out of the room. She felt unhappy.
"It was much pleasanter at home," thought poor Alice, "when one wasn't always growing larger and smaller, or being ordered by mice and rabbits. I almost wish I hadn't gone down that rabbit hole!"
"But it was rather curious (不寻常的). I wondered what would happen to me! When I used to read fairy tales, imagined that kind of thing never happened! There should be a book written about me! And when I grow up, I'll write one…but I'm grown-up now," she added, "at least there's no room to grow up any more in here."
"But then," thought Alice, "will I never get any older than I am now? That'll be a comfort, but I will always have lessons to learn! Oh, I shouldn't do like that!"
I'm Cameron Davis. I'm 13 and I've visited 45 countries. I have been travelling for as long as I can remember.
Before we left on our first trip, I was very nervous. (在……期间) the trip, I noticed that if I didn't talk to others, I couldn't make any friends. On my travels I have tried a lot of new things, from (高山) biking in Whistler to camel (骑行) near the Great Pyramid of Giza! When you travel to certain places, you start to learn about the different (文化). I learned to cook Pad Thai in Thailand, ate curies in India, and tried dumplings in China. I learned that food was great in different countries. My trips also (教) me how to become more independent. When we (计划) to travel, I always had to pack my own suitcase. Also, when we were traveling I saw a lot of families that rally had to depend on each other to live. Now we wash (餐具), make our own lunch and more. I don't love these chores but we have learned that this family is like four gears (齿轮); if one stops (工作), it is harder for the other three.
The (最好的) thing that I've learned about traveling is that sometimes you will have to take risks. When I was in Vietnam, I was playing with a little boy when out of the blue, he bit me. I still have the mark! I learned that there are (都) good and bad risks. Take the good ones.
