I was born in a poor village in Uganda. I spent the 1 days of my childhood there. My mother died when I was born. My father never cared about me, which 2 me to leave when I was ten. For the next three years, I helped people do something and they provided me with shelter and food 3 . Luckily, a 4 family paid for me to go to school. For the first time after leaving home, I felt 5 . Then, I attended school and got a job. I always 6 to help children in need. Yet I 7 felt I could do something more.

In 2016, I got passed to be a foster (收养) parent. By the end of 2019, ten kids had filled my house. In 2020, I got a call from a center for 8 children. When asked if I could take Anthony, I 9 it because ten kids were all I could do with. 10 , I was talked into taking Anthony just for the weekend. I didn't ask about his situation 11 .

Anthony arrived that night, "Can I call you Dad?" he asked.

"No." I needed to keep my 12 .

Monday morning a worker in the center came to 13 Anthony. From their talk, I learned he had been 14 three times, but nobody would take him in.

Looking at Anthony, I saw something that made me think of the 15 boy I had once been. "I'll take him in," I said.

I have struggled with feelings of unworthiness since forever. My most painful moments were at parties. My friends made fun of me because I was rhythmically (有节奏地)1 and I couldn't get my2 body to imitate the latest dance moves. I was never chosen to dance. I felt like I didn't3 . 

Around age 12, I decided that the way to4 these feelings of unworthiness was perfection. If I was just perfect then I would fit in. But this strategy didn't5 .My self-esteem (自尊心) was high when I got good grades and felt6 , but crashed when I didn't do well7 , or was left out. 

After several years of spiritual growth, it8 me that for many of us, self-worth is tied to our9 . We experience low self-worth10 we fail or lose approval. So I have begun to cultivate an unconditional self-worth. It's not about doing things perfectly.11 , "Unconditional self-worth" is the12 that you deserve to be alive, to be loved and cared for. 

The13 to unconditional self-worth is not always easy. It takes courage to free yourself from the 14 you've placed on your worth. But this journey is beautiful and worth taking. So I challenge you to embrace yourselves and find your metaphorical (隐喻的) 15 floor and move freely.

Daniel Hove spent years serving his community in Wisconsin as the Assistant Fire Chief for the Burnsville Fire Department. In 2012, he 1 from the job he loved after doctors diagnosed him with pancreatic（胰腺的） cancer.

Daniel spent years fighting the 2 disease. And he had tons of 3 from friends and family. But his beloved 11-year-old Labrador （拉布拉多猎犬）, Gunner,4 by his side every step of the way.

As Daniel's 5 grew more difficult, Gunner became ill, too. And he 6 the highs and lows right along with his favorite human.

"When my dad would get restless, the dog would be 7 ," Daniel's daughter Heather explained. "So once we 8 how the dog was doing—he wasn't moving much anymore and not doing well—we knew, it was coming."

As Gunner's suffering hit its peak, Heather 9 knew the dog's time on Earth was done. Gunner was 10 an animal hospital where the veterinarian put him to 11 forever. And soon after Gunner passed away, Daniel found his 12 was close. About an hour and a half later, Daniel was gone too.13 in life, the dog and his beloved owner also remained that way in death.

Special friends are placed in our lives. And the story of this dog and his owner is a beautiful 14 that sometimes those furry friends offer lifelong 15 without words.

It was a sunny Sunday afternoon. My husband was taking care of our baby girl so that my six-year-old and I could do some yard work, just the two of us. It was sure to be 1 . But soon, the clouds of mosquitos seemed 2 to our bug spray (喷雾). I was sweating, itchy (痒的), and arguing with my son about how to 3 weeds. I had told him the "right" way—getting those weeds out from the bottom, by the roots, 4 them entirely.

However, my son went about things in his own way. He pulled the 5 of the weeds off, moving quickly down the line as he left the remaining part still in the soil. Somehow, I found this to be incredibly 6 . Why couldn't he do it in my way and save me the time of having to 7 his share? Why did he do it at all if he wasn't going to do it properly?

"If you would do as told, we'd be done earlier and promised a longer period 8 we would have to return and pull weeds next time," I said, trying to keep my tone 9 .

"But people do things…10 , Mom," he said innocently.

My fire soon faded, replaced by the 11 realization that I'd just received a valuable 12 from the person that I was supposed to be teaching. While trying to 13 my baby girl, my kindergartener, and the yard work, 14 was a lifeline for me. But my way was, perhaps, not the best way after all. His time shouldn't be 15 . His job was to be a kid and take his time, for as long as he was able.

One fine day, a bus driver went to the bus garage, started his bus, and drove off along his route. No problems for the first few stops—a few people got on, a few got off, and things went generally well.

At the next stop, however, a big hulk of a guy got on. Six feet eight, built like a wrestler, arms hanging down to the ground. He glared at the driver and said, "Big John doesn't pay!" and sat down at the back. The driver was five feet three, thin, and basically mild-mannered. Naturally, he didn't argue with Big John, but he wasn't happy about it.

The next day the same thing happened—Big John got on again, made a show of refusing to pay, and sat down. And the next day, and the one after that, and so forth.

This grated on the bus driver, who started losing sleep over the way Big John was taking advantage of him. Finally he could stand it no longer. He signed up for body building courses, karate, judo, and all that good stuff. By the end of the summer, he had become quite strong—what's more, felt really good about himself.

So on the next Monday, when Big John once again got on the bus and said. "Big John doesn't pay!" the driver stood up, glared back at the passenger, and screamed, "Oh, yeah? And why not?" With a surprised look on his face, Big John replied, "Big John has a bus pass."

Don't ignore (忽略) the difference teenagers can make.

John Michael Thomas, 14, Florida

When John Michael Thomas decided to honor his friend and classmate Elizabeth Buckley, who died from cancer, he remembered how much she loved peacocks (孔雀).

He wanted to build a life-sized peacock fountain (喷泉) in Elizabeth's favorite park in the city. He thought it could be a place for people to relax and be inspired.

John Michael raised $52,000 to build the fountain.

Barrett England, 13, Utah

The wheels began to turn for Barrett England when he heard about Karma Bike shop, a place where young people can earn free bikes by reading and performing community (社区) service.

Barrett visited Karma's owner with his idea: He would collect and repair used bikes and donate them to the shop.

He expected to get about 10 donated bikes. In the end, Barrett received 39.

Zachary Blohm, 15, Wisconsin

The 25-year-old playground at an elementary school near Milwaukee, Wis. was so small that only 70 of its 575 students could play on it at a time.

That's when Zachary Blohm saved the day. He and some volunteers wanted to build a huge playground. To raise money, Zac planned T-shirt and bake sales, sold tickets and more. He held monthly money-raising events for more than a year. Overall, he collected $130,000 — enough to finish his project.

Jack Zimmerman, 16, New Jersey

For some people, finding a meal is as simple as opening the refrigerator. For more than 366,000 hungry kids in New Jersey, it's not that easy.

That fact didn't sit well with Jack Zimmerman, who organized a drive to lessen childhood hunger in his state. His goal: create 40,000 packaged meals that could be donated to those in need.

On game day, Jack and his volunteers started their work. After the final count, the team had packaged 47, 124 meals—well above Jack's goal.
