Different countries have different customs(风俗) in the world. It's very important for us to know about them.

When you go to the US, someone often says to you "give me five". What should you do? Do not get five dollars from your pocket! It will make others laugh! The person is not asking for your money, but your fingers.

In the US, "give me five" or "give me the high five" is a popular gesture. You can see it often in films or on TV. It means hitting(敲打) each other's right hands together.

People do it when they meet for the first time or something happy happens. For example, a student good grades in exams. If a football teams wins a game, the players will give high fives to everyone around to celebrate.

This gesture may come from the old Roman gesture of raising the right arm for the empor. This showed the person raising his arm did not have a knife in his hand.

Go to Thailand(泰国)—it's a great place to spend your holidays. I spent my last summer vacation in Thailand. It's really a beautiful place to travel to. Thai people are very helpful. Western films play an important role in the history of American films. They are set in the American West. Most of the heroes are from famous novels. They speak highly of people's spirit, courage and building everything all by themselves.
Early western films were mostly filmed in the studio, just like other early Hollywood films. With the development of technology, it began to be filmed at movie ranches(大牧场) from the 1930s. Often, the vast(开阔的) landscape becomes a character in the film. After the early 1950s, various(彩色的) wide screen technologies began to be used. During this time, the most typical western films focused on huge plains, soldiers or tourists, they were always the most handsome men.
Until recent times, western films seem to be a little out of date. For example, the guns are always some old ones. They were frequently(经常性地) used in films set in the 1870s. In the late 1960s, things began to change. Some new guns began to show in the films.

Players at the World Memory Championships can. In fact, the 2002 champion (冠军), Andi, memorized the order of 1196 cards after looking at them for only an hour! And a German girl, Lara, only ten years old, memorized 75 faces and names in fifteen minutes!
    In 1987, a Japanese man, Mr. Tomoyori, wanted to prove that his memory was the best in the world by remembering by heart pi (π), a number in math which starts 3.14159…This number never repeats itself or ends. He recited pi to 40,000 decimal places (小数位). It took the fifty-five-year-old man more than twelve hours to say the numbers, but he did it without making a mistake!
      To remember pi, Mr. Tomoyori connected each number with a sound. He then made up stories to help him remember the words he made from the sounds. In an interview after his achievement, he said, “I decided to go ahead and memorize the value of pi up to one thousand places. But it wasn't easy – in fact, it took me three years. To get to 40,000 decimal places it took me about ten years.”
    Unluckily for Mr. Tomoyori, his record was broken in 1995, when another Japanese man, Mr. Goto, memorized pi to 42,195 places.

As the years go by, the Italian community has found its place in Australia. One of the main reasons is the birth of a second generation(代). The children of migrants(移民) have grown up as Australians.

Lucy's family is an example.

Lucy's parents came from Italy in the1950s. Lucy was born in Sydney soon after her parents arrived in Australia. Lucy's parents were both workers. They spoke Italian at home. When Lucy went to school she had to learn English. Her mum and dad could speak just a little English. Athome it was always Italian. When she got a bit older, her mum and dad would askher to help them out when they didn't understand something in English.

When she was growing up, her parentsdidn't allow her to do as much as her Australian friends. Her friends didn't understand why she couldn't go out and do things with them, or why she alwaysdid what her parents wanted! Lucy's parents spent a lot of time with otherItalians, mainly because it was much easier for them to communicate in Italian. Because of this, she spent more time with kids from Italian background.

Things have changed since Lucy had children of her own. Lucy is not as strict as her parents were, so her own kids have more freedom(自由). They can move between the different cultures and feel easier in both cultures. They haven't had so many problems about their identities(身份). They see themselves as Australians with an Italian background and they're proud of their traditions.

Can you speak English? Maybe you know a lot of English words. You can read, speak and understand English, but there is another kind of language—the language of the body. All over the world, people "talk" with their hands，their heads and their eyes. When Japanese people meet, they bow. When Indians meet, they put their hands together. When British and American people meet someone for the first time, they shake hands. They do not usually shake hands with their friends. Women sometimes kiss their women friends, and men kiss women friends on the cheek(脸颊). When a man meets a man friend, he just smiles, and says "hello". Men do not kiss each other, or hold hands. Even fathers and sons do not often kiss each other.
