Can you speak English? Maybe you know a lot of English words. You can read, speak and understand English, but there is another kind of language—the language of the body. All over the world, people "talk" with their hands，their heads and their eyes. When Japanese people meet, they bow. When Indians meet, they put their hands together. When British and American people meet someone for the first time, they shake hands. They do not usually shake hands with their friends. Women sometimes kiss their women friends, and men kiss women friends on the cheek(脸颊). When a man meets a man friend, he just smiles, and says "hello". Men do not kiss each other, or hold hands. Even fathers and sons do not often kiss each other.

If you are sitting at a table with people you don't know, it is impolite to smoke without first asking if it will disturb them. At American restaurants and coffee shops, cold water is usually served before you order. You may find the bread and the butter are free, and if you order coffee, you may get a free refill.
Most cities and towns have no rules about opening and closing time for stores and restaurants, though they usually do make rules for bars. Especially in big cities, stores may be open 24 hours a day. Serving in restaurants are often large. If you can't finish the meal but would like to enjoy the food later, ask the waiter or the waitress for a “doggie bag”(剩菜袋). It may have a picture of a dog on it, but everybody knows you are taking the food for yourself. Tips are not usually added to check. You should leave a tip of about 15% on the table when you leave. In some restaurants, a waiter or waitress often brings your check on a plate, and you can put your money there. Then the waiter or the waitress brings you your changes.

English breakfast is a very big meal —eggs, tomatoes, tea, coffee….
For many people lunch is a quick meal. In cities there are a lot of sandwich （三明治）bars ,where office workers can buy brown or white bread or a roll （面包卷）,and then all kinds of salad（色拉）and meat or fish to go in the sandwich. School children can have a hot meal at school, but many just take a sandwich, a drink and some fruit from home.
“Tea” means two things. It is a drink and a meal , some people have afternoon tea, with sandwiches, cakes and a cup of tea.
They usually have the evening meal quite early, between six o'clock and eight o'clock, and often all the family eats together. On Sundays many families have a traditional（传统的）lunch. They have chicken, pork,… with potatoes ,vegetables…
The Englishmen like food from other countries too, such as French, Chinese, Italian and Indian. People often get take-away meals—they buy the food outside and then bring it home to eat.

We call the Chinese New Year the Spring Festival. There is a name for each Chinese year. We may call it the year of the sheep, the year of the monkey or the year of the dog. And this year is the year of the tiger.
Before New Year's Day, people are busy shopping and cleaning their houses. On New Year's Eve, there is a big family dinner. After dinner, the family don't go to sleep to welcome the New Year. On the first day of the New Year, people put on their new clothes and go to visit their friends and relatives. They say "Happy New Year" and some other greetings (问候) to each other. People usually have a very good time during the festival.

      If you like unusual places, you should visit the Hebrides Islands. Not many people live on these islands in the northwest of Scotland. The land is not good for farming. It's only good for keeping sheep (绵羊). The winters are long, cold, and wet. It's hard to make a living on the Hebrides, but for a visitor, these islands can be very special.
     They're not for everyone. Even summer days are cool and often windy. The water is too cold for swimming. There are only a few trees and green fields. Instead of fields, there are just rocks and small plants. The hills, too, are just piles of rocks. Sometimes the view (风景) looks like pictures of the moon.
       But there is beauty in this place. From the beach you can often see all the ways to the rocky hills. From the hills you can see far out to other islands and the open ocean. The colors, too, are special. Blue is everywhere. It's in the sky and in the ocean. In the spring there is also green in the hills. In the summer and winter the hills are more purple.
     On these islands you can forget about the rest of the world. The evenings are quiet. The restaurants close early, and there isn't any nightlife. Visitors stay at a guest house or a Bed. This is the best way to learn about life on the islands. The islanders are often friendly, and they like to talk.
     If you want to meet islanders, you can also try the pubs (酒吧) or even the shops. People are in no hurry here. They like to chat about the weather or the fishing.
    Do not come to the Hebrides for shopping. Come to walk in the clean, cool air. Come for the quiet beauty and for the views.

The government in China ended his one-child policy and let families have two children instead in 2015.

A Chinese Communist Party statement gave a number of reasons for the change in policy. The statement said the change is meant to balance population development, stop a falling birth rate(出生率)and strengthen the country's labor force(劳动力). China, with the largest population in the world, started the one-child policy in 1980. But the government allowed only a small number of couples to have two children. For example, some families in the countryside could have two children, if the first-born is a girl.

In 2013, the Chinese government gave other couples a chance to have two children if one of them was an only child.

Jiang Quanbao, a teacher and population expert, explained how Chinese families react(反应) to the newest policy. "Too many young people in the cities are no longer interested in having a second child," he said. "People in the countryside are more interested. But some of them are already allowed to have two children." At the end of 2014, China had a population of 1.37 billion people. A total of 800 million of them have jobs. But the labor market need of labor by the year 2050. With the two-child policy, an increase in births can solve this problem.

China is a country with many colorful days and festivals. The Dragon Head Raising Day (Longtaitou) is one of them.

This special day is on the second day of the second month in the Chinese lunar calendar (阴历). It stands for the start of spring and farming. This year, the day fell on March 10.

The dragon is important in Chinese culture. We Chinese people call ourselves the "descendants(传人) of the dragon". Therefore, people celebrate the Dragon Head Raising Day with many customs(传统) about dragons.

On the day in ancient times(古代), people put ashes (灰) in the kitchen. This was to "lead the dragon into the house". People believed that with the help of the dragon, they could have a good harvest (收成) in autumn.

Also, people eat special foods on that day. The foods are usually named after dragons. For example, people eat "dragon whisker (细须)" noodles and dumplings called "dragon teeth".

Today, many customs have faded away (消退). But one that has remained is the cutting of hair. It was said that a haircut during the first lunar month may bring bad luck to the mother's brothers. So many people have their hair cut on the Dragon Head Raising Day.
