The Boy Made it!

    One Sunday, Nicholas, a teenager, went skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine. In the early afternoon, when he was planning to go home, a fierce snowstorm swept into the area. Unable to see far, he accidentally turned off the path. Before he knew it, Nicholas was lost, all alone! He didn't have food, water, a phone, or other supplies. He was getting colder by the minute.

    Nicholas had no idea where he was. He tried not to panic. He thought about all of the survival shows he had watched on TV. It was time to put the tips he had learned to use.
    He decided to stop skiing. There was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed put. The first thing he did was to find shelter from the freezing wind and snow. If he didn't, his body temperature would get very low, which could quickly kill him.
    Using his skis, Nicholas built a snow cave. He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug out a hole in the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himself, like a blanket, to stay as warm as he could.
    By that evening, Nicholas was really hungry. He ate snow and drank water from a nearby stream so that his body wouldn't lose too much water. Not knowing how much longer he could last, Nicholas did the only thing he could—he huddled(蜷缩) in his cave and slept.
    The next day, Nicholas went out to look for help, but he couldn't find anyone. He followed his tracks and returned to the snow cave, because without shelter, he could die that night. On Tuesday, Nicholas went out again to find help. He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him. After two days stuck in the snow, Nicholas was saved.
    Nicholas might not have survived this snowstorm had it not been for TV. He had often watched Grylls' survival show Man vs. Wild. That's where he learned the tips that saved his life. In each episode(一期节目) of Man vs. Wild. Grylls is abandoned in a wild area and has to find his way out.
    When Grylls heard about Nicholas' amazing deeds, he was super impressed that Nicholas had made it since he knew better than anyone how hard Nicholas had to work to stay alive.

Lauren quit her job {#blank#}1{#/blank#}a chef and chose a different profession. She wanted to travel to different destinations and posted pictures {#blank#}2{#/blank#}her blog. Later she decided to become Australia's first {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(profession)photo blogger. She first {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(visit)Western Australia for work in 2013. Since then she {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(be)in love with northern WA and has been back six times. Lauren enjoys the beautiful landscape as well as the indigenous Australia. Due to her deep love for nature, she tries to take every opportunity {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(get)outside and admire the natural world in Australia. She also enjoys photographing the {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(rise)sun and animals, such as dolphins and kangaroos. Lauren really hopes to use her photography to make {#blank#}8{#/blank#}impact on people. For example, one of her photos shows a crocodile that is used to passengers {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(throw)food from boats and is becoming familiar with humans, {#blank#}10{#/blank#}could make her a danger to local people over time.

In 2017, I was diagnosed (诊断) with Type 1 diabetes (糖尿病). And then I was told that I couldn't drive for a few weeks until my blood sugar levels had1 . 

Driving was a2 very soon after diagnosis for me. I needed to get to the chemist's shop for my diabetes medicine and get to hospital appointments, but at first couldn't, for having been told not to drive. I didn't want to be a3 , having to ask for lifts all the time. 

I found it really4 to be unable to drive, but things settled down after that and seemed to be5 for a while. 6 , to my surprise, I had severe hypoglycemia (低血糖) last year and wasn't able to7 it myself. I called an ambulance and was taken to8 , where I saw doctors and nurses I didn't know as none of them were connected to the diabetes team who usually cared for me. That's where my9 began. They advised me not to drive on the basis of this disease. They told me to call the Driver and Vehicle Licencing Agency (DVLA) and10 what they'd told me to them. This led to my licence being canceled. 

I couldn't11 all that had happened. It seemed12 . I needed answers and13 , so I phoned the Diabetes UK Helpline number I got from their website. They14 I was right in thinking that the DVLA shouldn't have15 my licence based on this hypoglycemia, according to the law. With their help, the DVLA sent me a letter admitting making a mistake. I got it back in six weeks.

A grocery store in Ann Arbor, Michigan opened on Tuesday to the public. This is an artist's uneatable creation. The Plastic Bag Store presents shelves filled with items such as meat, eggs, cakes and so on, all of which are made from single-use plastics taken from streets and garbage.

The store at times during the day will be transformed into a stage for a series of short films in which puppetry(木偶戏表演), shadow play, and handmade sets are used to tell a story of how the overabundance of plastic waste we leave behind might be misinterpreted by future generations—and how what we value least may become our most lasting "cultural legacy (遗产)".

Theater and film director Robin Frohardt is the creative driving force behind the Plastic Bag Store. "I got the idea many years ago after watching someone bag and double-bag and triple-bag my groceries," Frohardt said on Tuesday. "I just was sort of struck by how much packaging was involved in our everyday lives. And it just seemed so unreasonable. I just thought, maybe I could set up a project to change it." Combining a real-life supermarket with film experience, Frohardt planned to use art and humor to question our culture of consumption and convenience and to show one of the greatest problems of our planet.

Plastic bags are created by fossil (化石) fuels and often end up as waste in landfills and the ocean. Americans throw away 100 billion plastic grocery bags per year. She hopes that she can continue to tour with the project and bring it to different communities. "My dream would be that this project will become unnecessary one day," said Frohardt.

 "Frohardt's work reminds us, with humor, to think not just about the next two weeks, but also about the next two decades and the next two centuries. What will remain hundreds of years later? We hope that our legacy will be plays rather than piles of plastics," said Tim Tompkins, President of Times Square Alliance.

My mother has always been one of those rare people that sees the good in everyone and does good things "just because". Life hasn't always been kind to her; she lost my oldest sister to leukemia (白血病) in 1963 and my father in 2007 after nearly 51 years of marriage.

She's had her ups and downs but has always 1 a positive, sunny outlook on life and been very 2 to people.

One day, my little sister fell and hurt her ankle, desperately needing a 3 to the hospital emergency room. My mother immediately 4 into crisis mode, packed my sister into the car, and drove to our local hospital. In such a 5 , my mother didn't call to tell my father. When she got to the hospital, she realized she needed to 6 with my father immediately.

While waiting for my sister to be examined, my mother 7 her way to the pay phone to place her call. She put her coin in, called my father and told him everything. After she hung up, the phone 8 several additional coins that Mom wasn't owed.

Realizing that the phone was 9 , my mother decided to leave the 10 coins by the phone. She told us that in a crisis, people might not remember to bring 11 with them to make that emergency call.

I've often thought about her 12 from an adult's perspective I realize that someone seeing the money by he phone may have 13 taken it because not everyone was as 14 as my mother. But I like to believe that my mother's faith was 15 and that someone who needed them found the coins waiting there.

Sullivan calls her right arm her "little arm". The 10-year-old was born with that arm less than half the 1 size. She has no elbow and tiny fingers to 2 things. However, it never discouraged her. This 3 kid could always find a way to make that little arm 4 for her. Until recently, riding a bike has proved out of her reach. But that might soon change 5 some college students.

Sullivan's grandparents saw a local news about Siena College students making a prosthetic (假肢的) hand for a little girl using the school's 3D printer. They went to see if her granddaughter could be a 6 for a new arm like that girl. However, there was a 7 when the grandparents asked if the college group could help Sullivan, as the design was for limbs (肢体) 8 an elbow or wrist.

Fortunately, Kristin, a junior engineering major said yes. She and her team couldn't 9 a perfect solution, but they promised to try. They met Sullivan from time to time to measure and test the design, 10 the initial plans to fit Sullivan's little arm. They've worked for almost a year to build Sullivan a solution. The task has been one of 11 and creativity,12 by kindness. "Sometimes you get 13 , but she is so excited," Kristin said. "Her motivation and her strength, 14 our team along."

On May 4, Sullivan received her arm. She also received a(n) 15 surprise: a new bike.
