Eighty-year-old retired tailor, James McKay, spent Saturday night in prison after hitting 30-year-old Keith Smith over the head with his walking stick. McKay's wife, Laurene said that, while McKay is usually a（n）1 and pleasant person, he had been driven to this act of2 by literally getting wet just once too often. He could no longer3 it.

Smith lives above the McKays. He is a（n）4 gardener, and also a fish collector. Unfortunately, the water he5 over his balcony（平台）every day ended up on the McKay's floor, or too often, on the unsuspecting McKays themselves.

"For the last two weeks, since Smith moved into the flat above us, we dared not go onto our6 ," said Laurene. She added that it wasn't only the water7 their balcony from Smith watering his plants that8 them, but also the way he cleaned his fish9 . "We'd be sitting there happily reading our newspapers, when suddenly so much water would come from above that we'd be as wet as if we had10 with our clothes on! We could hardly11 the smell of fish!"

And on Saturday evening it was just too12 , "It was James' birthday," Laurene recalled, "and it was such a beautiful night to enjoy the starry night13 . I made him a birthday cake. The candles were a great sight as you can14 , but James didn't get to blow them out." Instead,

Smith15 one of his larger tanks over his balcony and both the McKays and the cake were wet through. "I have never seen him move so fast and I couldn't stop him. He was up there in a（n）16 ."

Smith is not going to take things further with the police. He has also17 to change his ways from now on. And what of James McKay? As he left the18 station,a large crowd of supporters sang him "Happy Birthday". "Definitely the most exciting birthday ever!" said the19 old man. "The best since my20 , I'd say!"

In a small town lived Matthew, a diligent（勤奋的） youth with a passion for English. Nevertheless, he was completely  1  of the online world, leading him topav a heavy  2  in a case later.

One day, Matthew received an email from a stranger, claiming by 3  a special English learning material, he could easily improve his grades. The email also 4 several success stories, which convinced. Matthew. He followed the instructions and transferred much money to the sender's 5 . Receiving the material, he found it worthless. Matthew felt 6 and regretful, yet powerless.

Everyone wants a blue ribbon. Blue. First place. The best. However, I was 1 a blue﹣ribbon person in sports. 

One spring weekend our class had a field trip to a park. After lunch, our teacher 2 the idea of having a three﹣legged race. A little boy got me for a3 . This boy was the second most 4 boy in our class. I'm sure he knew he was in trouble the second they tied his5 to mine. This guy was a winner. But I knew that, with me, he didn't have a 6 . 

The gun sounded, and we were off to the other side.7 when we turned around and headed back for home , we were in the lead!

Then only feet from the finish line, I 8 and fell. Bad luck!

We were close enough that my partner could have easily 9 me across the finish line and won. He could have, but he didn't. Instead, he 10 , reached down, and helped me up, and I still have that little red ribbon. 

When we grew up, I became a lecturer. I gave a 11 to my audience. I told them about that little boy who had made a split﹣second decision that 12 a friend up was more important than winning a blue ribbon. 

I told them why I've kept that ribbon. To me, that ribbon is a 13 that you don't have to be a winner to those closest to you. The world may see you as a failure or a success, but those14 to you will know the truth. That's important to remember as we 15 through this life. 

The university I attend has about 3500 students. One early afternoon, I {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (walk) around the campus when I found a female student sitting on the walkway with tears on her face. Everyone just walked by her, so I decided to stop {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (give) her a hand. I dropped my books and sat down beside her. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} turned out that she injured her ankle (脚踝) and was {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (able) to walk. So I told her that I would sit with her {#blank#}5{#/blank#} she was ready to get up. It only took a few minutes for her to calm down. Then I took her {#blank#}6{#/blank#}the hand and got her to the nearest hospital.

She thanked me so much for just stopping! Since then, when we run into each other {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (occasional) on campus, she would smile and thank me again. And we have become good friends now. I am amazed that just my sitting there, {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (offer) support and comfort to a total {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(strange) would affect her so greatly. She said she was grateful for what I had done, {#blank#}10{#/blank#} made her feel that she was not alone in the world.

Rick Guidotti put aside his career as a fashion photographer to turn his lens（镜头） to people living with genetic, physical and behavioral differences.

He says what changed his perception（看法） of beauty was a chance encounter with an albino （患白化病的） girl."I was just tired of people telling me who was beautiful. Every season that face would change but I was always told who was beautiful. As an artist, I don't see beauty just on covers of magazines. I see it everywhere. So that was my original intention—that opened my eyes a little wider and wider."

Guidotti has created Positive Exposure, a not-for-profit organization that uses photography and video to transform public perceptions and promote a world where differences are celebrated. Guidotti and Positive Exposure are featured in a new documentary called On Beauty.

One of the women featured in the film is Jayne Waithera. "I never thought I was beautiful because nobody said that to me, but meeting him was my profound moment. I remember that particular day. He took my picture and I felt so good like I felt there's somebody who, like, really loves me and sees me for who I am and who sees me more than my condition."

Guidotti is travelling from city to city to promote On Beauty. He says his tour is not about money; it's about the message. "As I travel from community to community, I'm taking photographs and I'm empowering（给某人……的权力） individuals with a positive sense of who they are. They're seeing beauty in their reflection but I'm also empowering their families and they in turn are empowering their communities as well. All is based on the philosophy of change—how you see, how you change."

The summer after my freshman year college, I had to get my first job. This was probably one of the1 tasks I have ever had to do. I had never held a job when I was in high school because my parents wanted me to put all my 2 into my studies. 

At first, it was very hard. I filled out dozens of 3 but got no calls back in the first two weeks. It made sense because I had 4 no job experience. All I could 5 was that being a high school graduate and a year of college. 

However, halfway through the third week, I finally got a call back from one of the places I 6 . We had set up a meeting time, and after my 7 , I was more than ready to start working the following Monday. I was 8 at the chance of working for my wages. 

When I started, it was very clear that I was not 9 . I made mistakes with orders and often 10 sales promotions（推销）. My parents made a bet I would not 11 the first two weeks, and I would be back looking for more 12 . However, I stuck with it. 

After working a while, I got better at orders, and always 13 the cheaper options for customers. A couple of weeks later, I had been told by the manager that I had 14 the award of the best employee of the month. It taught me a lot about responsibility and gave me the 15 of working.
