Today,roller skating (滑旱冰)is easy and fun. But many years ago, it wasn't easy at all. Before 1743, peoplenever tried skating on wheels. That changed because of a man named John JosephMerlin. Merlin's work was making instruments. In his free time he liked to playthe violin. Merlin was a man with many ideas and many dreams. People called hima dreamer.

    One dayMerlin received an invitation to go to an important party. He was very pleasedand a little excited. As the day of the party came near, Merlin began to think.He wanted to find a way to make a wonderful entrance at the party. Merlin hadan idea. He thought that he would attract a lot of attention if he could skateinto the room.

    Merlintried different ways to make himself roll. Finally, he decided to put twowheels under each shoe. These were the first roller skate shoes. Merlin wasvery proud of them. He dreamed of arriving at the party and skating into theroom while playing the violin. He was sure that everyone would be verysurprised.

    On thenight of the party Merlin rolled into the room, playing his violin. Everyonewas really surprised to see him. There was just one problem. Merlin had no wayto stop his roller skating. He rolled on, playing the violin. Then, with alleyes on him, Merlin hit into a huge mirror on the wall. The mirror broke intomany pieces with a very loud noise. But nobody forgot Merlin's wonderfulentrance after that.

Bullying (霸凌) is a serious problem at school. It makes students feel lonely, unhappy, and afraid. It makes them feel like there must be something wrong with them. It even makes some kids not want to go to school or play outside. In other words, it's very important not to let bullying ruin (毁坏) your life!

Okay, so there you are, and someone is bullying you. What do you do "in the moment"?

★ Ignore the bully. Don't even look at him. Walk right past him if you can.

★ Don't cry or get angry. Even if you're feeling really hurt, don't let it show. That's the bully's goal (目标). You can talk about or write down your reactions (反应) later.

★ Turn and walk away, or run if you have to. Make yourself stay away from the situation. Go to a place where an adult (成年人) is present.

★ Remember that you are not the one with the problem. It's the bully who has the problem.

★ If you're being called names or teased (取笑), imagine that you're inside a huge fish tank (缸) filled with white fog. Nothing touches you. Practice by thinking of the worst things a bully can say to you, then letting the fog eat them up.

★ If you're being bullied again and again, there's one "Most Important Thing" you should do: Talk to an adult. Start with your parents. If the bullying happens at school, make sure your parents discuss it with a school official (官员) not with the parents of the bully. Make it clear to the adult that you are really upset by what's going on. This is especially true if the bullying is verbal (言语) bullying.
