The Duanwu Festival in China, also called Dragon Boat Festival, is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month every year according to the Chinese lunar calendar. For thousands of years, this festival has been marked by people's eating Zongzi and racing dragon boats. (A) To hold the dragon boat races is in memory of Qu Yuan. He was one of the greatest poets in ancient China.

    Qu Yuan was born in Zigui of Hubei Province over 2,200 years ago. Qu Yuan was an honest minister (大臣) of the State of Chu during the Warring States Period (475—22l BC) . He was upright, patriotic (爱国的) and wise. (B) 屈原想给自己的祖国带来和平并让它变得更强大。But the country was in the hands of bad officials, he could do nothing to change it. (C) He was very discouraged. At last, Qu Yuan ended his life by throwing himself into the Miluo River. It is said that people tried to save him by jumping into the river. But it was too late and all their efforts were in vain. Also, they were so sad and they threw rice into the water to feed Qu Yuan's spirit.

    Now we read his poem Li Sao which is filled with deep love for his country. We can see the dragon boat races and have a kind of Chinese food named Zongzi to eat during the Dragon boat Festival.

Do you know guide dogs? Guide dogs are usually very  {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (聪明).They have long acted as the"eyes"of  {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(失明) people. Most of them can't get around without the help of a well-trained guide dog. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (训练) guide dogs is a difficult task, but thanks to The Seeing Eye, we're able to get the most out of the four-legged friends.

The Seeing Eye is the world's  {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(最老) guide dog school. They  {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (养育) and train guide dogs.

When Seeing Eye puppies are 7 or 8 weeks old, they are delivered to the homes of volunteer puppy raisers. They teach the puppies basic manners and commands (命令), and take them out to  {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (大街) and on public transport.

When the puppies are 13 to 19  {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (月) old, the raisers return them to The Seeing Eye.  {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (每个) dog is assigned (分配) to a Seeing Eye instructor and it will be trained for about 4 months.

Once the four-month training  {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (结束), the instructors will train the dogs with their new owners for 18 to 25 days.

"Training a guide dog  {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(要求) lots of work and patience, but it's well worth the effort,"says Emily Foster, who works for The Seeing Eye."I feel happy every time I see a working guide dog in the street."

As humans, we use the senses of sight, touch, and hearing to communicate. We send messages with body language, we greet friends with touch, and we use words to show our feelings and ideas. Animals don't communicate in as many ways as humans --for example, they don't have language like we do —but many animals do also use the senses of sight, touch, and hearing. A good example of this is elephant communication.

Like humans, elephants understand each other by looking at each other's body language. To send a message, they use their whole body, or just their heads, eyes, mouth, ears, trunk (象鼻), tail, or feet. For example, elephants spread (展开) their ears to show anger. And while humans shake their heads to disagree, elephants to do this to show they are happy.

As with humans, touch is also very important between elephants. Just like a human mother holds her baby, a mother elephant regularly touches her young baby with her trunk. Elephants also show they are friendly when they touch other elephants. And when they want to have fun, they hold each other by the trunk and pull. Even if they can't laugh like a human, elephants have a great sense of humor.

Elephants have very large ears, which means they can hear other elephants from as far as 2.5miles away. Like humans, they can also copy sounds and make their own sounds that seem to communicate basic human words and phrases like, "Hello." "I love you." and "Let's go."

So while it's true that humans are amazing at communication, elephants also communicate in ways that we can't and that's probably true for other animals, too. The next time your pet dog or cat looks at you, touches you, or makes a noise, it's probably trying to tell you something very important!

The Chinese dragon is one of the most important parts in Chinese culture. Chinese dragons look like a combination (结合体) of many animals such as snakes, fish and deer in Chinese culture. They have two horns (角) and a long body. They also have fantastic powers—they can fly in the sky, swim in the sea and can even make rain. 

The Chinese dragon is a symbol of strength and good luck. The emperors of ancient China loved dragons. Their clothes were covered with pictures of dragons. 

We are proud to call ourselves the "descendants (传人) of the dragon". In Chinese, excellent people are often called "dragons". A number of Chinese sayings talk about dragons. For example, "Hope one's child will become a dragon" means hoping he or she will be successful. 

It is said that people born in the Year of the Dragon are creative, active, brave and it's easier for them to get angry. There are also some traditional festivals about dragons in China, such as the Dragon Head-raising Day and the Dragon Boat Festival. The festivals are celebrated differently by us. These two festival s come every year, but the Year of the Dragon comes every twelve years. 

People who are interested in Chinese culture may study dragons and it will be helpful for them to have a better understanding of Chinese culture. As the "descendants of the dragon", it is our duty to work together to pass our traditional culture on to more and more people.

①Many people travel to varied places in the world by air. Usually it takes a long time, perhaps half a day, for passengers to stay in the plane. So airlines offer passengers food. But it is common that they feel bad about food taste. Do you agree? 

②To solve this problem, airlines try hard to improve their food. They would like to do so because they don't want to lose customers. 

③However, according to scientific research, a part of the reason why plane food tastes bad is that at high altitude (海拔) we can not taste things as well as we do on the ground. Also scientists have found that our noses become very dry even before a plane takes off. As the plane moves up, the change in air pressure reduces one third of the sensibility (感觉) of our taste buds(味蕾). So our taste buds become senseless. The sad face, however, is that our noses don't know it.

④All of these help explain why food on the plane tastes so bad. ____ Without doing so, the food would be tasteless.

⑤Now there are many researches on this. According to one of them, some volunteers are asked to lie with their feet higher than their heads for weeks. And scientists write down their feelings about food taste.

⑥Though scientists try their best, it is not as easy as they thought. Because they can't deal with the special environment successfully, such as the change in air pressure, making food taste good is still hard for them. 

If there was an empty lot (一块空地) in your neighborhood (街区), what would you want to turn it into? My classmates and I have turned such an empty lot into a place of hope.

The empty lot in our neighborhood was full of wild grass. As a project for our geography class, we wanted to change the lot. We hoped it could become a place to improve (改善) people's mental (心理的) health.

After weeks of designing, researching and making models (模型), we began our plans. Now the lot is a different place. There is a wood walkway with purple benches (长椅). Kids like the relaxing color, and they come to sit together and make friends.  

A few beautiful plants grow in the ground. There is also a bright blue hopscotch (跳房子游戏) board. We make it for a group of 8 to 10 school-aged kids who have no places to play in the neighborhood. And you can see a white wall painting with red words like "Love" and "Peace".

Now, the lot gives the neighborhood hope and beauty. More people love the neighborhood and have great hopes for things of the future.
