Along with firewood (柴), rice, oil, salt, sauce and vinegar, tea is considered one of the seven necessities for life in China. Now, it has also won global (全球的) attention as a shared cultural treasure of mankind.

Since ancient times, Chinese people have been planting, picking, making and drinking tea. More importantly, China's tea culture has developed social custom. It is Chinese tradition that a host should welcome visiting guests with boiled tea. A poem by Song poet Du Lei reads: I offer tea, not wine, to a guest on a cold night:

Boiling tea is one of the oldest Chinese tea brewing (煮沏) methods, dating back (追溯) to the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Tea leaves were boiled for a long time and sometimes they were cooked together with different kinds of herbs (草药) and fruits. During this process, people can enjoy a quiet time. Later in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), a faster and more convenient method become more popular—steeping (冲泡).

However, the old method is now making a comeback among Chinese young people. On the app Xiaohongshu, here are over 40,000 posts on the topic of "stove-boiled" tea (围炉煮茶). They roast tea leaves before boiling them in a teapot on a stove. People sit around the stove in a natural setting and have snacks with their hot tea. Some also wear traditional hanfu as if it could take them back to those ancient times.

Through "stove-boiled" tea, people can taste a slower life and find their inner peace (内心平). As is written in one Xiaohongshu post, "It is very relaxing to drink hot tea and chat with best friends."

Medflies (果蝇) are a big headache for farmers worldwide. They can lay their eggs in over 300 kinds of fruits and vegetables. The worst thing is that when they make their way into an area, it is hard to keep the products free of them.

Medflies lay eggs inside the poor fruits or vegetables. When the eggs break, they turn into worms that can seriously damage the products. The problem is that it can be hard to know that the flies are there until it's too late. The fruits and vegetables still look normal even after the eggs are laid inside. Once the damaged fruits and vegetables are sent to other places, the Medflies spread and reproduce at a surprisingly fast speed.

In the 1980s, three Medflies were found on a farm in California. To stop the problem from spreading, the local government set up a quarantine area (隔离区) where no fruits, nuts, or vegetables can be moved out. Meanwhile, it developed a program to keep Medflies under control. The plan involved using planes to spread millions of male Medflies out over the area. According to the scientists, these Medflies all have been treated with a special method to make sure that they can't help produce new Medflies. That means even though new eggs are laid, they will never grow.

Dropping millions of Medflies sounded like a bad idea, but to everyone's surprise, the program worked well. The government says the number of Medflies in California has shrunk by over 90%. Now we can fight Medflies with Medflies!

Most people have a favorite color，but how people feel about colors depends on their culture. This can be very important to people in business that sell products all over the world. They might choose a color because they think it is exciting or attractive，but in another country that same color could be used to give a sad message. Look at these examples: 

If you ask someone in Britain what the right color is for a bride（新娘） to wear，the answer will be white In China and other eastern countries，happiness and prosperity（繁荣）. ▲In Britain，red is used as a sign of danger. Road signs and warning labels（标签） are often in red. In eastern cultures

In Egypt，yellow is the color linked to death. In Britain and other western cultures，death and funerals（葬礼），but in many eastern countries white is the color most people connect with death and funerals. 

Many people like the color orange because it is bright and exciting. Some advertisers will not use orange in their advertisements because they believe it suggests that the products are cheap and perhaps not of good quality. 

In a word，colors have different meanings in different cultures. We should learn to choose the proper color in some special situation. 

Swifts(雨燕) live mostly in the air. These small birds are among the fastest animals on Earth. In fact, swifts can go two or three days without touching the ground! To get used to life in the sky, swifts use their speed and the saliva（唾液）in their mouths. 

Swifts can fly faster than 100 miles per hour. That's because their wings are like boomerangs (飞行器). This shape of the wings helps them to fly much faster. They can also move one wing faster than the other, which allows them to make sharp turns without slowing down. Making fast, sharp turns helps swifts catching flying bugs to eat. 

The saliva helps swifts catch bugs to feed their young. It is sticky, like glue. Swifts often fly into clouds of bugs such as mosquitoes and open their wide mouths to catch as many insects as they can. The bird collects insects in its mouth gradually and holds the insects in a sticky ball of saliva. One food ball can contain nearly 1, 000 bugs. 

Swifts also use their saliva as glue to build their nests. The birds catch feathers in the air and stick the feathers together to build a strong nest on the side of a building. Swifts' short feet are not good for walking or standing on land for long. But their sharp claws allow them to stick to rocks and walls so they can take a brief rest before returning their lives in the sky.

Read， read， read！

Reading is an important skill in language learning. But I'm not just talking about serious things like difficult newspaper articles. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} But I would advise you not  to choose difficult things to read， because you are more likely to get bored and give up. Instead， you should choose something fun and interesting. 

TV and films

Another thing that really helps me learn a language is watching TV or films in the language. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} You can start with a children's show or something that you have already seen in your native language. That way you will already know what's happening and you can write down useful words and sentences or try to repeat what they say.
