Have you ever heard of typhoons (台风)?
Typhoons are some of the worst storms, usually around the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea. Most happen in July, August and September.
How does a typhoon happen? When lots of sea water gets hot in the summer sun, it evaporates (蒸发) into the air. This makes the air hotter. When the air gets warm enough, it starts to move higher up into the sky. Then, cooler air around it rushes in. It fills (填充) the space that is left. After the air gets warmer, it starts to move quickly, making wind. The wind goes in circles (圆圈), and it keeps moving higher in the sky. The warmer the air gets, the quicker the wind moves. And when the wind moves faster than 30 metres a second, a typhoon begins.
A typhoon has two parts. One is called the "eye". In the eye, the wind does not move so fast. The other part is the wall of clouds around the eye. This is where the strongest winds and hardest rains are.
Typhoons are very dangerous. In 2022, Typhoon Chaba killed (杀死) 25 people in China, and one was missing.
What to do when a typhoon hits:
Stay inside. Close all the windows and stay away from them. Try to bring all of your things inside. Strong winds could even blow away your bikes! Listen to the radio or TV for important information.
How bloody a scene! Blood Falls in Antarctica is a waterfall (瀑布) which shoots blood-red water into a river. The sight is a perfect background for a horror film: mysterious and of course bloody. Its special color was long believed to be caused by red algae (红藻) . Until 2017, the true cause of the so-called blood was proved to be oxidized iron in saltwater. ____ Impressive yet a dangerous sight, frozen bubbles (气泡) can beseen in winters at Abraham Lake in Canada. When methane (甲烷) gas gets crowded underwater and freezes, it will finally form this special sights—frozen bubbles. Such plenty of methane ishighly risky. So even a lit match nearby can cause an explosion (爆炸). Mirror of the Sky During the new moon and full moon periods, tourist can see aclear reflection of the sky in the waters of Sasaran Beach in Malaysia. The smooth sand and lowest water level create such anunbelievable sight. Also known as the "Mirror of the Sky", this water beach is an amazing place to take pictures and thus a perfecttravel destination. |
Over the past few years, cars have become smarter and smarter. Some of them can even drive themselves. Now, our roads have followed the steps. In the United Kingdom alone, there are around650 kilometers of" smart roads" in use. Across the world, many more are being built. Some new technologies are being put to use.
▲ Roads that recharge(给……充电)
Global warming has forced us to search for new energy sources. Why not look to the roads? Piezoelectric roads, a new kind of smart road, use vibrations(震动) from passing cars to produce electricity. In fact, Piezoelectricity was invented in
1880. However, it has never been widely used before now. The U. K.'s Lancaster University is going to improve it.
▲ Built- in brain
Roads of the future may be able to know how many people are on them, send drivers updates(最新的情况) on weather and traffic jams, and recharge electric cars while driving.
This seems impossible, but one American company has almost made it come true. By sensing the weight of a car, the smart roads can track the speed of each wheel. The smart roads are like large touchpads(触摸屏) so that they can collect data(数据) by looking for wheels. And then the roads will send it to the drivers.
▲ Roads that never freeze
It can be dangerous to drive in snowy weather. A tech company in Israel has developed the Snowless roads. When they find snow or ice on their surfaces, the roads will heat themselves up, melting(使融化) them away. The company has succeeded in testing this project on a few Canadian roads and in some of its car parks.
