The Art of Paper

    Chen Zijiang is a paper cutting expert whom I interviewed for my article on Chinese Art. Paper-cutting is something that he learned to do from an early age.

    "It is a Chinese folk art with a long history," Mr. Chen told me, "Paper cuts of animals have been found in tombs. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}" He added that by the Southern Song Dynasty, paper-cutting had become an important part of everyday life.

    {#blank#}2{#/blank#}They are paper cuts for decoration, for religious purposes (宗教目的) and for design patterns.

    Paper cuts for decoration are often seen, on windows and gates. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}They are also used on presents. A present for parents whose child has recently been born might show a paper cut of children, for example. Paper cuts which show the Chinese character for double happiness are often used to celebrate weddings.

    Paper cuts for religious purposes are often found in temples{#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    The third kind of paper cuts are these used to make patterns on clothing. They are also sometimes used to decorate jewelry (珠宝) boxes. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}.

As Ginni Bazlinton reached Antarctica, she was greeted by a group of little Gentoo penguins (企鹅) who seemed happy to say hello. These lovely penguins welcomed and started a trip that Ginni would never forget. 

Ginni, now 71, has had a deep love for travel when she was young. As a professional dancer she travelled around the UK, but always hoped to find more. When she retired from dancing,  ★ 

After taking a degree at Chichester University in Related Arts, Ginni began to travel around the world and found a job teaching English in Japan and Chile. It was in Chile she discovered she could get a cheap ticket going to Antarctica from the islands off Tierra del Fuego, "I just decided I wanted to go." she says. "I had no idea about what I'd find there and I wasn't nervous. I just wanted to do it. And I wanted to do it alone as I always love it that way."

In March 2008, Ginni boarded a ship to begin the journey to Antarctica with 48 passengers. "From seeing the wildlife to enjoying sunrises, the whole experience was wonderful. Antarctica is better than any other place," Ginni says. "I remember the first time I saw a humpback whale (座头鲸): it just rose out of the water like some prehistoric creature (生物) and I thought it was smiling at us. You could still hear the beautiful sound it was making underwater."

The realization that Antarctica is a valuable and important land which needs to be respected (尊敬) by humans is the biggest thing for Ginni.

My son, Kevin, loved wrestling (摔跤运动) as he was growing up. When he entered high school, he showed a lot of athletic ability. Even as a freshman wrestler, we could see the hope of his future, and he went on to improve each year. As a senior, he'd become the leader of a team that set an unbelievable record. Just as we expected, he went into the state tournament (锦标赛). 

Then he won four matches and ranked number one. Here we were, in the finals of the state tournament, ready to win our championship—we still didn't have a state championship when his high school career was over. 

Unluckily, his last match didn't go well! I felt terrible, and I was unwilling to accept what had just happened and unable to believe it. I painfully watched Kevin as he shook hands with his opponent (对手) and stood calmly as the judge raised his opponent's hand in victory. Then he quietly walked out of the gym. 

A few weeks later, I received a letter from Kevin's school. In the letter, the principal praised Kevin's devotion to his team, his respect to his opponents and his spirit of competition. After I read this, I cried. 

For years, I had watched every single match where Kevin had wrestled in high school, but I hadn't noticed all the outstanding qualities that his principal (校长) mentioned. I always focused on the wins. And when he didn't get that final win, I was especially hurt and disappointed. I'd failed to realize that Kevin was working hard to achieve victories, but always performing with character no matter whether he won or lost. 

At that moment, my son became my mentor (导师). He taught me that winners in life appreciate the pursuit more than the victory itself. 

① Arat Montoya, 36, lives in West Linn, a city in the US. He is from a family of bakers. But he doesn't like making bread. When his father asked him to follow the family tradition, Montoya said, "I'm sorry, Dad. I love dogs. " he said. 

②Montoya spent a few years working at a dog club. After the club closed, Montoya started to offer(提 供) a doggie day care service(服务). He has a" Doggie School Bus" and he works as the driver. The bus runs five days a week and the service is $30 per(每一) dog each day. 

③Montoya's service is pretty nice. Every morning at about 7 a. m. , he drives the school bus to the owners'(主人) houses to pick up the dogs and takes them to" school"—a farm. The dogs are full of excitement because" go to school" means they can play all day. They can run around and play with each other at" school". When" school" finishes, Montoya takes the dogs back home. He also sends some videos and pictures to show the dogs'" school" life to the dogs' owners. 

④ It shows that the doggie day care service is a great business(生意) idea. Montoya loves taking care of those dogs. And the dogs love going to" school". The most important is that the dogs' owners speak highly of Montoya and his business. All of them are happy about this doggie day care service. 

⑤Now, more than 300 owners ask Montoya to take care of their dogs. "I'm the happiest man in the world, " Montoya said. " Doing what I like truly makes me happy. "

Kate is both my classmate and my best friend. I first met her when I went to junior high school

Kate is tall and slim(苗条的). She has long hair. She has big eyes and a small nose. I like her smiling face best It makes her look really pretty and kind. Kate is a friendly girl. She always has a smile on her face and looks happy. She likes to help people. She helps me with my homework and she is very patient. When I feel bored or unhappy, I often go to her. She will talk to me and tell me interesting things. 

Kate wants to work with children. She would like to be a teacher when she grows up. I think she will be a great teacher.
