Something unexpected happenedin the summer of my eleventh year. The home I had grown up in burned to the groundin the middle of the night. Thankfully, my mom, dad, grandma, brothers and I escapedalong with my dogs. Yet, we had nothing but the night clothes we were sleeping in.I spent the rest of that night with a friend of my family. I tried unsuccessfullyto sleep in the bed in his house. I was too scared.

    The next day my mom brought me a few T-shirtsand pairs of jeans that another friend gave to her. One pair of them was too shortand the other pair was too long, but I didn't care. At least I had some clothesagain. My dad returned to our broken home to see what he could find. The only thinghe could save was my mom's rings.

    To spend the summery dad rented us a big houseon the same road as our old house had been. As we moved in, our friends and ourcommunity continued todonate (捐赠) all they could to help us to get back on our feet. There were moreclothes, furniture, food money, and even some books for me to read. Love was aroundus.

    Looking back now I am thankful for all we wentthrough that summer because it taught me so much about life, love and people. Itshowed me that when you have nothing left but love, for the first time you see thatlove is enough.

Hi! My name is Ruby. I live in California, the USA. Most people here enjoy  {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(do) sports. Swimming is {#blank#}2{#/blank#} very popular sport here and I also like it. I think swimming is {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(exciting) than many other sports. I know most Chinese people like table tennis. I also like playing basketball. But I spent too much time {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(play) basketball last term. And my mother was always {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(worry) about my schoolwork at that time. Now I know that nobody can waste (浪费) time. I am studying even {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(hard) at every subject this term. And of course I make {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(few) mistakes in my homework than before. I will have a big exam next Monday. I'll be much{#blank#}8{#/blank#} (careful) to get better grades. I have one brother. His name is Ben. He often plays tennis with our father {#blank#}9{#/blank#} Saturday afternoons. Tennis is {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(they) favourite sport.

Many people think firefighters only fight fires, but we do a lot more! Every day is different in our job. Some days are {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (danger) than others, but today something {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (fun) happened. We answered a call from {#blank#}3{#/blank#} worried neighbour. When we {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (arrive), we found a little boy sitting at the top of a tree looking very unhappy. The neighbour was below the tree {#blank#}5{#/blank#} shouted up, "Don't worry, Jake! The firefighters are here!" We got out our ladder and I climbed {#blank#}6{#/blank#}to the boy. I asked him, "What are you doing up here?" He looked at me {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (sad) and said, "I came up {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (save) my kitten (小猫). It was stuck in the tree." "Oh," I said. "And {#blank#}9{#/blank#}is your kitten now?" The boy pointed to a little grey kitten sitting by the front door of the house. "Well," I smiled, "I think you could be a good firefighter one day, but you need to learn to climb big {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (tree)!" The little boy laughed and I carried him down to his mother.

 Joe is an American. When Joe was born, he had a problem with his heart and doctors had to perform an operation(手术) on him. When he was 3, Joe had his second operation. This operation didn't go well and he even couldn't move the left side of his body. The doctors at the hospital didn't think he could get better. Then the family moved to Florida.

 Joe liked being in the water and his mother thought swimming could help him. First, they went to swimming pools in hotels, but some hotel guests didn't like them being there. Then one day she went with Joe to a place called Dolphin Plus, where people swam with dolphins. Joe met Fonzie, a 3-meter-long, 275 kilogram dolphin there and the story really began.

 Soon, Joe was eager to see Fonzie every day. He loved playing with him and feeding him. Every time Joe arrived, Fonzie came to see him right away. Joe's mother told him always to feed Fonzie using his left hand, so Joe used his left side more and more. Slowly, he got better and better.

 Joe's mother saw that Fonzie helped him a lot, and she knew it was a good idea for other people, too. So, she and her family worked to open a place called Island Dolphin Care. It's next to Dolphin Plus and many people with health problems come to spend time with the dolphins.

 Joe is now over 30 years old and very well. However, Fonzie died in 2004 when Joe was 17. Joe wrote:"Fonzie was a great friend to me; he and I shared a lot of good times. He always put a smile on my face when I was feeling down."
