One person's uselessand ugly things can be another person's loves. That's why so many Americans donot throw things away. They put them {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (在外面)their houses and put a "For Sale" note on them. People sell what theyno longer want. It is called a yard sale. In some parts of the US, {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (这样的) a sale might be also called a moving sale.

Yard sales take place {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (尤其) on weekends in spring, summer and autumn. The sellers may putadvertisements in {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (报纸) beforehand. Early in the morning, the sellers {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (拿) all the things out of their houses and sit all day peacefully in thesunlight, waiting for someone to come and get them home.

New things in storesare more expensive. So they are {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (激动的) to find what they haven't {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (买) such as a warm coat or a chair for ten or fifteen dollars. Maybethey find dishes for twenty dollars while such dishes can cost them two {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (百) dollars in a store.

Some people also go toyard sales to find a special thing to {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (收集). For example, it may be an old toy train or a{#blank#}10{#/blank#} (油画).

In the eyes of many foreigners, Chinese people are the best hosts and the worst guests. And Western hosts sometimes look rude (粗鲁的) in the eyes of Chinese guests too. That's because the guest-host relationship in China is{#blank#}1{#/blank#}from that in some Western countries.

Whenever I enter a Chinese home, there is always fruit on the table for me, and there is always someone bringing me a{#blank#}2{#/blank#}of tea or water.{#blank#}3{#/blank#} in the West, the hosts always do things in their own way. 

My wife's mother is Chinese and she doesn't smoke. When I see some of her guests smoking in her house, as a non-smoker, I {#blank#}4{#/blank#}unhappy. Usually I want to {#blank#}5{#/blank#}them directly, but in China, a good host does not do that. In most North American homes, if you are a guest, and the hosts are non-smokers, you should not smoke in their house. At the very least, you should ask, "Is it OK if I smoke here?" But, don't be {#blank#}6{#/blank#}if they say, "No, you can't smoke here," In our culture, if you smoke in the host's house, you are a bad guest. But if the hosts don't allow you to {#blank#}7{#/blank#}in their house, it doesn't mean they are rude hosts.

Guests in China also {#blank#}8{#/blank#}special habits. Some Western people may not adapt to (适应) these habits very soon. Thankfully, my wife is Chinese, so whenever we visit a Chinese family, she {#blank#}9{#/blank#}me to buy the host a gift. However, giving a gift to a host is not always necessary in my country. So, if you invite international guests to your house, don't be too surprised if they don't bring you a(n){#blank#}10{#/blank#}.

In a word, no matter where you are, the best way to be a good guest is to adapt to the habits of your hosts.

Do you know which social app is popular with Chinese young people now? "Short videos"are certainly the most popular. A large number of young people use Tik Tok(抖音) and Kuaishou. They think it is fun to share their lives by short videos, while others have other purposes as well.

A 12－year－old user named Elsa has about 2.7 million fans on Tik Tok. The girl has shared her dancing studies on Tik Tok since last July. One of the videos won her about one million fans."I feel really glad to share happiness with people by short videos, " said Elsa.

To some other young people, they use short videos to have a quick look at the hot programmes. "Because I don't like to spend many hours watching a whole programme, I hate waiting for a programme to end, and I prefer to watch short videos of wonderful parts of hot programmes, " said Wang Zhihao.

However, some young people feel bored with short videos."Killing time is the main reason for me to watch short videos, and many short videos are almost the same, so I think they are not so useful or interesting. What's more, I really don't like the videos about odd and dangerous things, " said Wen Nan, another college student.

Recently, something else has appeared. Some videos tell people what products are worth buying. Some short videos even sell bad products, and it is hard for customers to get their money back. So we should think twice before we want to buy the products by short videos.

If you've ever seen elephant seals(象海豹) lying on a beach, you might think all they do is sleep. But now scientists have discovered that when elephant seals are in the ocean, they hardly sleep at all. They just sleep for about two hours a day. 

Even though elephant seals are large animals, they have to be careful in the ocean. Near the surface(水面), predators like sharks and orca s are a danger. So elephant seals spend most of their time diving(潜水) deep underwater, looking for food. Usually, they will dive for about 30 minutes, then come up for air for just a couple of minutes before diving again. 

Scientists have wondered how elephant seals can sleep while they're at sea, since they are almost diving all the time. Animals like dolphins and sea lions have a special way. One half of their brain can sleep, while the other stays awake. But elephant seals are like humans- both halves of the brain need to go to sleep at the same time. So how do they sleep? 

To find out, a scientist named Jessica Kendall- Bar did a research. She created a special cap that could record the elephant seals' brain activity. The cap also collected information on the elephant seals' heart rates, how their bodies were moving, and how deep they were. Dr. Kendall- 

Bar and her team put the caps on thirteen young female elephant seals. 

The scientists learned that elephant seals steep in short times while they are diving. They only sleep for about 10 minutes at a time. They wake up in time to go up for more air. The scientists found that elephant seals only sleep for about two hours a day when they're in the ocean. That means that the rest they get once they return to land is very important, which helps them have energy again. Back on land they sleep for about 10.8 hours a day 

The researchers hope that their work will help to protect the places where elephant seals sleep when they're on land. 

A lot of people' play sports, but very few people become sports professionals(专家). If sports   aren't going to be your future, then why should you play them? Why should you train every day? Why should you work hard and feel sore(酸痛的) the next day? Wouldn't it be better to forget sports and only pay attention to your lessons? In fact, there are a lot of reasons to play sports. 

 First of all, sports are a great way to exercise. Exercising keeps you healthy and strong. It also helps you stay in a good condition. When you exercise, your body makes endorphins(安多芬) which give you more energy and make you feel happier. 

 Also, sports teach young people how to communicate and work as a team. They teach young people to respect(尊重) their coaches, teammates and players from the other team. Many reports say that sports help young people stay out of trouble. If a young person plays sports, he or she may have fewer problems. This is because sports teach people about rules. They also teach people that if they work hard, they might succeed. 

Another good way of sports is that they make people leave their houses. These days, a lot of people spend too much time watching television and playing video games. When you play sports, you go outside and exercise in the sun. You take in fresh air. All of these things are important. 

 Maybe you' re not going to become a sports professional, but that doesn't matter, sports will help you become a better and happier person.
