Rare Monkeys of Tongren, Guizhou

In Tongren, Guizhou, there are two special kinds of monkeys: theGuizhou golden snub-nosed monkey and the Francois'langur. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

The Guizhou golden snub-nosed monkey is very rare. There are only around 800 of them in the world, and they all live in the FanjingMountain National Nature Reserve(自然保护区). This kind of monkey has an upturned nose and yellow hair on its head. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}So, if you visit Fanjing Mountain during the breeding season, you might see mothers carrying their cute golden babies.

{#blank#}3{#/blank#}There are about 2,000 of them in the world, and one-third of them live in the MayangRiver National Nature Reserve. Baby Francois' langurs are also golden when they are born. But when they turn one year old, their backs become black, and they grow a black"mohawk"on their heads. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}At night, they hide in caves to sleep. The special rocks and landforms in theMayang River National Nature Reserve make it a perfect home for them.

F. The Francois'langur, also known as the black snub-nosed monkey, is another special monkey in Tongren.

Yushu, Qinghai Province, is one of the living places for black-necked cranes(鹤). Cranes have very long necks and their necks are black. That's why they are called black-necked cranes. Cranes travel very far every year. Cranes spend about 5 months in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (高原).

Starting in March, black-necked cranes will fly back to Qinghai. There are lakes and marshes (沼泽), perfect for them to live in. Year after year, black-necked cranes may fly to other places, but they always come back to the plateau areas.

Their life is difficult, because they don't have enough food and the weather changes very often. Black-necked cranes have a very small population. They are under first-class state protection in China. Local people treat the birds with love. In local tradition, they are a symbol of good luck, so they are very popular.

It is not hard to get along with these wild animals. Just give them a little more space. They can have a bigger chance to increase quickly. People in Qinghai are working very hard to make sure the black-necked cranes live better.

The oil paper umbrella is a traditional Chinese handicraft(手工艺品). It has a history of over1, 000 years in China. In early Tang Dynasty, it was introduced to Japan and Korea, so it was called the "Tang Umbrella". Later oil paper umbrellas were spread to other Asian countries, such as Vietnam, Thailand and Laos. 

Yuhang in Hangzhou is famous for making oil paper umbrellas for more than 230 years. They are mainly made of skin paper, bamboo, and a coating of tung oil(桐油). It takes more than 70 steps to make them, including making bamboo ribs, pasting paper and painting patterns. It takes at least a week to make an umbrella. In 2008, these umbrellas were added to Intangible Cultural Heritage List(非物质文化遗产名录)of China

A young man called Liu Weixue learned the traditional art of making Yuhang oil paper umbrellas from his grandfather. He improved the umbrellas to win the heart of young people. As the traditional paper was easy to break, he started to use a different kind of paper. In a test, his umbrellas were opened and closed for 1, 000 times without breaking. He also used a different kind of bamboo to make the umbrellas weigh less. 

Now Liu hopes the art can be passed on, so he goes to local schools to teach students. He also takes part in lots of activities in different places to make the art be known to more people.
