Diaojiaolou, also called Diaolou, is a traditional house in southern China. You can find many of these houses beside a river or in the mountainous areas of Yunnan, Guangxi, Hunan and Sichuan. This type of building is popular among the Miao, Zhuang, Buyi, Dong, Shui, and Tujia peoples.

Diaojiaolou dates back to hundreds of years ago. When ancient Chinese pioneers moved from northern to southern China, they met many difficulties. They suffered a lot from the beasts (猛兽), snakes, and insects in the mountain forests. At first, they set fire to keep beasts away, but they were still often bitten by snakes. Then an old smart leader in the village invented Diaojiaolou. They are in fact 100% wooden houses built on silts (泥沙). These buildings are usually two to three storeys high. The whole house is really strong. Even if one of the stilts (支柱) was destroyed, the house would remain standing.

The stilt houses have many advantages. In ancient times, these buildings would provide protection from beasts. Nowadays they continue to provide protection from snakes and insects. What's more, these buildings help prevent humidity-related (湿度相关的) illnesses that are common in southern China. In the mountainous areas of southern China, people can't endure the wet ground in summer, so living on high floors is a wise choice.

And the special buildings are in perfect harmony (和谐) with the beautiful scenery—small bridges, flowing water, and green mountains. And many stilt buildings are hidden in ancient trees and bamboos, like traditional Chinese landscape paintings.

Haman Bekele, now 14, moved to Virginia, the US when he was 4 years old. But he still cares about his birthplace: Ethiopia(埃塞俄比亚).

"Skin cancer(皮肤癌) is a big problem in developing countries," Bekele told USA Today. But it's expensive for people to treat it. That made Bekele feel sad. He wanted to find a better way. So Bekele learned about skin cancer. He learned that dendritic cells(树突细胞) help protect skin. Then he made skin cancer-treating soap with the cells. Doing it taught him how important it is not to give up, Bekele said. One big challenge was to make sure the soap didn't break into pieces. He tried many different ways. Finally, he succeeded. 

"It was so difficult to get a bar of soap to not just melt immediately(立即融化掉)," Bekele said, adding that he tried many different ways. "Keeping trying is a very important part of the scientific process."

Bekele's invention won him 25,000 dollars (about 178,000 yuan) as prize money in the 2023 3M Young Scientist Challenge. It's a competition in the US that encourages kids to think of new ways to solve everyday problems. "I'm going to use this prize money to continue research within the science field," Bekele told NPR.

Pickleball is rising in China

Pickleball, a relaxing sport that has been around since the 1960s, is becoming popular in China Young people are growing especially interested in the game.

The sport of pickleball was invented in the US, in which two or four players hit a wiffle hall over a net. It looks like tennis, but is played on a badminton court(羽毛球场) with a paddle(球拍).

It has many holes which are designed to stabilize(稳定) its flight as it travels from court to court. Balls come in different colors, including white, yellow and green, but must be a single color to meet the rules of the International Federation of Pickleball(国际匹克球联合会).

It's smaller than a tennis racquet(球拍) but larger than a ping-pong paddle. It is mainly made of light materials.

A piokleball court is the same size as a doubles(双打) badminton court. It's about6×13.5 meters.

On April 26, 2024, the Shenzhou XVIII manned spaceship's three astronauts, Ye Guangfu, Li Cong and Li Guangsu successfully entered the space station and met with the Shenzhou XVII astronauts.

The crew (乘组) will carry out more than 90 experiments (实验) in space so that they can study microgravity in space, medicine and many other science topics.

This mission is special because it is China's first space-based study of water ecosystems (生态系统). The astronauts brought a fish tank filled with water to the space station. Four zebra fish and algae (水藻) live in it. The algae can give the fish oxygen, keeping them alive. The tank can also feed the fish, control the temperature and lighting, and collect fish eggs by itself.

Why zebra fish? Because they share 87 percent of their genes (基因) with humans. Next scientists plan to take mice to space. They'll raise them there and then bring them back to Earth for further study. Studying animals in space can help scientists understand how the human body reacts to space conditions.

The Shenzhou XVIII crew will return after six months in space. After that, they will help achieve China's first manned landing on the Moon.

Festivals have always been an important part of life and culture. In the modern age, {#blank#}1{#/blank#} festivals have appeared. Some of the new festivals come from different {#blank#}2{#/blank#} of the world. Some appeared just because of the interesting meanings of the dates.

Now people around the world {#blank#}3{#/blank#} International Women's Day, International Museum Day and International Nurses' Day. These festivals didn't start in China, but we celebrate them in a Chinese way. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} example, many Chinese call International Women' s Day "Girls' Day" or "Queens' Day". On this day, {#blank#}5{#/blank#} have interesting activities such as dressing up in Hanfu.

Other new festivals include 520 Day, Eating Day (May 17th), and Double 11 Day. 520 is on{#blank#}6{#/blank#} 20th. In Chinese, it sounds like "I love you" and 517 sounds like "I want to eat". Double 11 Day is 42. {#blank#}7{#/blank#} known as Singles' Day, because the date November 11th or "11.11" is about the number "1". So Double 11 Day is about "single". And it is now one of the {#blank#}8{#/blank#} shopping days in the world.

For many young people, new festivals seem to be much {#blank#}9{#/blank#} interesting than the old ones. But it doesn't matter whether they are old or new {#blank#}10{#/blank#} festivals always offer a great chance for us to enjoy life with our loved ones.

Over the last few years, my family and I have been working towards a greener life. My mum and dad1 less and often take a bus to work. We recycle things like old paper, cans and bottles, and we give2 clothes and furniture to people who need them. In order to save energy, we3 the lights during the day. We also try to use less water by turning off the tap（水龙头）while we brush our teeth, and reusing the washing machine water to clean the toilet. Taking4 showers will help too, as it will save water. Every member of our family will take part. 

Saving the planet needs everyone's5 . Although each one of us may only do a little, together we can make a big difference. Let's work together to make our planet a better place to live.
