①Many people describe New York City as the centre of culture in the United States. That's because no matter what you're interested in, you'll find it in New York City. Whether it's theatre, music, ballet, or museums, the city has some of the very best to offer.

②The street called Broadway in New York City became the centre of American theatre in the mid-19th century. The number, size, and fame(名声) of the Broadway theatres grew as New York City grew. In 1910 the brightly lighted street became known as "the Great White Way". Beyond these theatres the city offers free performances of the plays of William Shakespeare in Central Park. Operas and concerts are also held in the park.

③New York City has a number of world-class space for performances of all kinds. The city's concert halls include those at the Lincoln Centre for the Performing Arts as well as Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall. The groups that perform in these halls include the Metropolitan Opera, the New York City Opera, and the New York Philharmonic. The New York City Ballet also performs at the Lincoln Centre, in the New York State Theatre.

④Museums are another important part of New York City's cultural life. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Guggenheim Museum are among the city's art museums. You can also spend many hours in the American Museum of Natural History and its Rose Centre for Earth and Space Science.

⑤With all of these resources(资源) there is always plenty to do in New York City.

Can knots be a form of art? It is in China.  It is used for decoration (装饰) on clothing or to hang on a wall.  Skilled knot artists make knots that you might see sold in stores that you can take back with you. 

What Is a Chinese Knot?

A Chinese knot is a knot that is tied and woven (编织) from a single length of rope to be different shapes.  Most knots have two cords (粗线) entering the knot from the top and two leaving from the bottom.  Each kind of knot is named after its shape or the symbolic meaning that it carries. 

Knot artists can use different colors, but they prefer deep red ones.  The color red means good luck in China.     ▲

At first, people may have made them to record information before people started to write.  One hundred thousand year old tools have been discovered that were probably used to tie and untie knots. 

It is known that they were used for artistic decoration and to express thoughts and feelings in the Tang Dynasty (618—907).  The traditional art form was carried on by people as part of their culture. 

Ancient and Modern Use of Artistic Knots

Even today, Chinese knots are rich in symbolic meaning, and they hold value when given as gifts or passed down through families.  For example, in ancient times and even now, lovers may give a knot as a symbol of their love.  The "true love knot"  and the "double happiness knot"  are given or used at weddings to express love and growing old together. 

Along with being symbolic gifts or messages, knots are still used if people wear traditional Chinese clothing.  They are used as jewelry such as earrings and necklaces. 

International(国际的) Nurses Day falls on May 12 every year. It is in memory of the birth of Florence Nightingale. Who was this lady?

Nightingale was one of the most important health workers in history. During a war(战争)in the 1850s，she worked with other nurses to care for English soldiers(士兵). She set many important rules for health care. Because of her habit of making rounds(巡诊) at night，people called her "the Lady with the Lamp(灯)". Later in 1860，Nightingale opened a health care school in London. She trained many excellent nurses in this school. 

Every year on this festival for nurses，a special activity is held in London. A lamp is handed from one nurse to another. This means that knowledge is passed from one nurse to another. 

Nurses make up more than half of all health workers，but there are still 5. 9 million more nurses needed in the world. The terrible disease(疾病) has reminded us of the importance of nurses. Without nurses and other health workers，we wouldn't be able to fight against diseases successfully. 

In October, Chinese people can enjoy a one-week National Day holiday (假期). People spend (度过) their holiday in different ways. Some people may get together with their family. Some people may do some shopping. Others may visit some places with friends. There are so many people in these places. And this will bring some problems (问题). For example, food in these places will be more expensive. 

But at the Laojunshan scenic spot (景点) in Henan, visitors can have a good time eating the cheapest lunch. The workers there make special local food for them. The most interesting thing is that visitors can eat a bowl (碗) of lunch with only one yuan. The one-yuan lunch helps hungry visitors a lot. 

During the National Day holiday, the workers make 25, 320 bowls of lunch. But they get 26, 147 yuan, 827 yuan more than they should. They feel very surprised and try to find the reasons (原因). Finally, they know it is because some visitors want to thank these workers for their help and kindness. 

A loud noise wakes Jan up suddenly. She looks at the alarm clock beside the bed. 

It's five o'clock. Then she hears the noise again. It's thunder(雷). Then she hears a different noise. It's the sound of something hitting the window. She gets up and goes to the window. She can see Tom standing outside in the rain. He's shouting at Jan, telling her to come outside. 

Jan gets dressed, puts on her anorak and goes downstairs quietly，trying not to wake Tom's parents. 

"What are you doing, Tom?"

"The storm, " he says. "It's the same storm as Thursday night. Let's go to the tree. Maybe you can go home!"

Jan follows Tom down the road then she remembers something. 

"The time capsule!"

Tom shows her the biscuit tin under his jacket. "I've got it. " And now maybe there's the possibility she can return to the future. Soon they come to the river and then the old building. They run up the path through the trees and arrive at the piece of land with the apple tree. 

"Now what do we do?" asks Jan. 

"I put the time capsule back where I found it and. "

Tom uses his hands to dig a hole by the tree. He buries the time capsule and then stands up. 

Jan suddenly thinks of something. 

"Tom! I wanted to give you something from the time capsule. "

"No. I don't want anything. It's more important for you to go home. "

Jan feels sad that Tom doesn't want something to remember her. But he's right. The important thing is to get home. 

"I'm never going to forget you, Tom. Thanks. You're a real friend. "

"Bye, Jan. Look for me in the future. Promise?"

"I promise. "

Then he turns and runs back to the trees. Jan watches his shadow disappear into the trees.

What colour is the sea? It's blue. What colour is the grass? It's green. What colour are the strawberries? They're red. Everything in the world has its colour. Our art teacher tells us that red, blue and green are three primary colours (三原色) if we put red and green together, we can get yellow; if we put red and blue together, we can get purple. We all live in a colourful world.

Different colours can give us different feelings and different colours have different meanings. The same colour also has different meanings in different places. In China, people like red very much because we think red can bring good luck (好运) to us. But in some European countries, it means anger (愤怒). In most countries in the world, people like green, but people from England and Japan don't like it. In Australia, people think that black cats can bring them good luck, but in America, people think the white cat is a lucky cat.
