Learning in the Field

A fun farming class took place in the fields! On Sept 15, Grade 7 students from Jinan No.34 Middle School, Shandong, went on a field trip. They learned about farming, reported Qilu News. At the grain base (粮食基地), teachers talked about grains with students and answered their questions. The students saw millet and soybeans (小米和大豆). They touched the wheat (小麦) and learned that people usually harvest (收获) the wheat at the end of September.

Young Reporters Put on a Show at School

Students at Johnson Middle School in US, are reporting their school's news in their own news program. The students take turns to make the program. They set up a green screen, sit down and give their classmates the headlines (新闻提要) of the day. They include (包括) what's going on in the school and news about future events. They share the lunch menu of the day. "The kids come in excitement. They love being on the news and sharing the news with other kids. They are eager (渴望) to know what's happening around them." said B.J. Burke, the school teacher.

On Nov 8, students from Nanjing Foreign Language School have a special class. During the class, they have a hands-on experience of making folk clothes. The students took on the challenge (挑战) making their own bags through tie-dyeing (扎染). It is a dyeing skill to make blue calico (印花布). The dye and the cotton material (材料) used to make blue calico all come from nature. "Tie-dyeing is a magical art. Everyone does it a bit differently, and you never know exactly how it will look in the end." said Ma Qianyu, a grade 8 student, happy with her work. The students will later go to Nanjing Museum to get more knowledge about life in Jiangsu and the folk customs there.

Boasting a long history, China is home to many famous paintings, which are now in the hearts of more than a billion people.

Nymph (仙女) of the Luo River—Gu Kaizhi

The legend has it that Cao Zhi fell in love with the governor's daughter. However, she married his brother and the prince became upset. Later, he wrote an emotional poem about the love between the goddess and common people. In the 4th century, Gu Kaizhi, a Chinese artist, was moved by the story and illustrated the poem.

During the Tang Dynasty, the genre (体裁) of "beautiful women painting" enjoyed popularity. Coming from a noble background, Zhou Fang created artworks in this genre. In his painting, the ladies stand as if they are fashion models, but one of them is entertaining herself by teasing a cute dog.

Along the River During the Qingming Festival—Zhang Zeduan

Zhang Zeduan depicted (描述) the landscape in his work. However, instead of concentrating on the vastness of nature, he captured the daily life of the people of Bianjing, present-day Kaifeng. His work shows much about life in the Northern Song Dynasty.

A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains—Wang Ximeng

Not only did officials and scholars enjoy listening to music, but they also found pleasure in depicting nature. One such painter was Wang Ximeng. He was a prodigy. Wang Ximeng painted A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains when he was only seventeen years old. He died several years later, but he left one of the largest and most beautiful paintings in Chinese history.

The four great inventions of ancient China are China's outstanding contributions to the whole world, and have had a great impact on world's scientific and cultural exchanges.

Zhang Li, a 12-year-old boy, from Sichuan, was lazy before. He hardly ever did any housework. But now, things have changed. Washing dishes, cooking and making the bed... all of these have become important parts of his daily life.

This big change is the result of a new program at his school. Starting from last term, his school asked all the students to do housework. It wanted to help students to improve their life skills.

At the beginning of each month, every student gets a list of housework to do every weekend. Their parents help keep an eye on their performance. They can do housework, such as washing cups and cooking food. On holidays like Mother's Day, students should prepare gifts for their mothers.

Wang Dan, 13, has learned several life skills through the program. "I was afraid of fire," she said. But she tried to overcome her fear(害怕) and finish her cooking tasks. At the same time, she also learned how tired her mother is after doing housework every day. On Mother's Day, she made a cake for her mother to show her thanks. "I've begun to know better about my parents and want to help them more." she said.

Other schools in Sichuan are also developing (发展) programs to teach their students life skills. On May 2, another middle school held a life skill competition. Students had to finish many tasks, such as cooking and washing clothes. They showed their skills and proved that they are growing up.

Are unusual sports popular? The British seem {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (enjoy) unusual sports more than those from most other countries. But the Bog Snorkelling (沼泽浮潜) Championship is one of {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (strange) of all sports. It takes place every year in Wales. The {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (play) have to swim 110 meters through cold, dark, muddy water—without {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (use) their arms! And they have to keep their faces in the water at all times, breathing through a snorkel (呼吸管).

Who would like to take part in a terrible competition like that? Well, in fact more than 100 people join it each year, and many {#blank#}5{#/blank#} them are from other {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (country). Dan Morgan from Wales is {#blank#}7{#/blank#} champion (冠军) of last year. He finished the course in 1 minute and 30 seconds, and he won the {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (one) prize.

Is bog snorkelling {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (real) so awful? Sheelagh Tompkins, the woman who started the competition, says yes. "It's dark and you can't see, and that's scary." So why do the British enjoy such unusual sports? "Perhaps it's {#blank#}10{#/blank#} we have a chance of winning." she said.
