I was feeling a little blue because my mother had lost her job.

One day, while I was 1 in the street, I heard the piano music and singing rising above the noise of the people. I walked more slowly to 2 where it was coming from. Then I saw a young lady siting at a piano.

She was singing songs about love, 3 yourself and keeping on trying. The way she was singing made me a little comfortable. I stood there 4 , watching her playing on such a crowded square. I thought that she must be 5 enough to perform in front of so many people. She noticed me. I walked over and told her how good her 6 sounded. "Thank you," she said.

Last Friday, my friend Deborah asked me if I would like to learn how to make tofu. I couldn't think of any good reason not to be interested in, so I said: "Yes". So the next day I met her and other three nice people and went to Hodo Soy Beanery in Oakland, I enjoyed the trip. And I learned a lot from the trip. The following is what I learned.

Tofu has a history of 2,000 years. Although the word "tofu" is from Japanese, the food may come from China. There are two main kinds of tofu: soft tofu (软豆腐) and firm tofu (硬豆腐). In some parts of Asia (亚洲), people use tofu as a kind of meat.

Douhua is one kind of soft tofu. It is a popular breakfast food in China. Because it is very soft, people can't eat it with chopsticks, but with a spoon. People often eat it as a dessert (甜点) and often add spring onions and sauce (酱油) to it. In Malaysia people usually eat douhua with white or dark sugar water.

A story is told of Marie Curie. Her sisters once built a pyramid(金字塔) of chairs around her. Mari e was busy reading. She didn't even notice until she stood up and knocked them all over!

 It would not be surprising if this story were true. As a child, Marie loved books and experiments(实验). Nothing could take her attention away from her studies. She did not lose this love of learning as she got older. In the 1880s, very few women went to college, and even fewer women became scientists. Marie did both.

 After she met and married another scientist, Pierre Curie, the two of them began working together. Their studies focused on the element radium(镭元素). They had discovered it during their research.

Radium is found in some rocks. It is a white metallic element with a blue glow(微弱而稳定的光片) The glow lasts for a thousand years.

 The radium glows because it produces energy. That is on c reason why the Curies were so interested in it. But studying radium is not like opening a book. Radium must be isolated(分离) from the rock around it. That is like trying to take just the chocolate out of chocolate milk.

 The couple spent their life savings on eight tons of rock. ∧n old shack(棚屋) became their workplacc. They heated the rock to remove the bits of radium from it. Days of work turned into months. Finally, they spent four years in that shack studying the mysterious clement with the blue glow.

 During their research, the Curics found that radium could help treat discase. That is when Marie and her husband became big news. They were written about often. This got the public interested. in radium. Soon. the Curies' work earned them the Nobel Prize in Physics. This award is one of the highest honors in the world. Maric had come a long way from the days of chair pyramids,

I am Alice. My sister and I spent our last summer holidays with our uncle who is a   geologist(地质学家) and loves to collect stones.

 One day he bought us two backpacks and asked us to go to the mountain with him. We walked the whole day. Every now and then he put stones in our backpacks. To our surprise, he also took some stones out from them. But we thought he had just found better stones.

 When we returned to the house, we were very tired. The backpacks were so heavy that we felt relief(轻松) when we took them off. Yet our uncle's backpack was half empty.

" Why did you give us so many stones?" we asked.

"I didn't. You did." he said." You didn't know it, but I gave you a little attitude(态度) test today.I listened to every word you said. Whenever you were complaining(抱怨),I added a stone to your backpacks. Every time you talked about something with positive(积极的) thinking, I took out a stone. And now look at your backpacks."

 Our backpacks were full of stones.

" Your negative(消极的) thoughts are just like stones. You carry them____in your mind just like those stones in your backpacks. The more negative thoughts you have, the heavier your mind will be." said our uncle.

 With great love, our uncle taught us one of the most important lessons in life— the power(力量) of the attitude.

I used to hate running. In secondary school, I found it really tiring to run and I was always one of the1 students to cross the finish line. Then, in 2023, my friend asked me 2 I would like to run a 10K event with him. I answered without thinking, "No way! I hate running."

 Over the weekend, I3 his question. "Why do I hate running when I haven't tried it since Year 7 in secondary school?" In the end, I decided I should give running another4 before I said I hated it. I told my friend I would like to go to the 10K event with him. He was happy to hear that I would5 him. He advised me to look on the Internet for a running program to help me learn 6 to run.

 There were lots of running programs on the Internet. I7 a 14-week running program that would teach me how to run for 30 minutes non-stop. I enjoyed following the program as I could see8 in my running each week. I went from hating running to loving running!

 On the day of the 10K running event, my friends and father came to 9 for me. With their support(支持) and my training, I finished the 10K in 72 minutes. It was difficult, but I felt very proud for having tried it. From this 10 , I learned that it is a good idea to try something before saying you hate it!
