Alfred and Mary Walker and their son, Robert, live in England. They are visiting Hong Kong on Holiday. They will send postcards home. Now read what they are writing. 

Dear Richard, 

We arrived in Hong Kong three days ago. We are having a wonderful time, but every day is very busy. We get up early and go the bed late. It's rather tiring. 

Yesterday we took a bus to the Park. It was a very clear day. From the top, we saw the whole of Hong Kong. We took lots of photos. Some of them will be really good. I will buy a video camera for you because I know you want one. I'll get it tomorrow because we are going shopping.

Dear Mum and Dad. 

We are having a lovely time in Hong Kong. Two days ago, we went to a place called Ocean Park. We saw lots of sharks and dolphins there. Robert enjoyed it very much. Today we are going to Lantau Island. We will see the huge statue of Buddha there. Tomorrow we are going shopping on Hong Kong Island. 

Hong Kong is very different to our hometown in England. The streets are more crowded and there is more traffic on the roads. It is noisier than at home as well, and everything is more expensive here!

Hi Dan!

Hong Kong is a great city! There is so much to see and do here. We went to a great place called Ocean Park. I saw lots of tropical fish and some sharks. I also went on a roller—coaster and a cable car. 

I loved the roller—coaster and I went on it four times! Mum and Dad thought I was lost, but then they saw me at the top of the roller—coaster. 

Tomorrow will be a shopping day, the worst part of the holiday!

When I was a kid, a tree grew in front of my home. At the age of 10, I was just tall enough to reach its lowest branch and lift myself into its embrace. I wasn't the only climber. Sometimes two or three of my friends would join me in the sycamore, or in the maple down the street. Climbing trees allowed us to enter another world. In fact, it was a world within a world: We took our imaginations with us into those heights, which by turns were a fortress, a pirate ship, a spaceship, or a mountain castle. 

In my small Maine town there are some lovely maples, lindens, and oaks. Their branches spread wide and they are strong enough for people to climb. But I have not yet seen a climber. Perhaps computer games have taken place of tree climbing, or maybe the activity went the way of monkey bars, which came to be viewed as too risky and have largely disappeared from playgrounds. 

It is a sad loss. I have always believed that, since low-hanging limbs provide no benefit to the tree, they must be meant for the child. Robert Frost understood this when he wrote: When I see birches bend to left and right, across the lines of straighter darker trees, I like to think some boy's been swinging them. My only disagreement with Frost is his inference that tree climbing is a gender-specific undertaking. Both boys and girls have what it takes to make a joyful ascent. 

The campus of the university where I teach is lovingly landscaped with all sorts of trees. During a recent walk, I grabbed a branch and a moment later I was sitting on it. Then the memories came flooding back: The old friends, the long view of my neighborhood, and finally, the reluctance to return to earth when the parental call to supper came. 

I was so lost in my thoughts that I didn't hear the student calling to me from below. He asked what I was doing. I didn't waste time on explanations. "Come on up, "I said. "The air's fine. "But he only laughed, and waved me off. He didn't know what he was missing.

In old times, people didn't have smartphones or computers to use for fun. Still they had interesting games to play. Let's take a look.

Kites

Kites have quite a long history. In the old story, Mo Di made the first kite. People first used kites to send messages. In the Song Dynasty, kites got very popular with people. Now, Beijing, Tianjin, Nantong and Weifang are the four most important places of kite making.

Cuju

This is old Chinese soccer. The name" Cuju" first came out in the book Records of the Historian by Sima Qian. At first, soldiers played the game as training. In the Song Dynasty the game was all the rage at the time. People across the country loved playing it. Women also played the game.

 Chuiwan

Chuiwan is a ball game. It is a bit like golf(高尔夫). The game got popular in the Song Dynasty, It was still popular in the Yuan Dynasty and Ming Dynasty. Someone in the Yuan Dynasty even wrote a book called Wan Jing for the game. However, the game got less popular in the Qing Dynasty.

Go

Go, or Weiqi, is a game for two players. It has a history of more than 4,000 years. In the old story, Yao made the game to teach his son. People in old times thought it was a game for gentlemen(绅士).

This year a new TV program called Young at Heart came out in the UK. The program matched teenagers with old people, and asked them to meet twice a week for two months. Two of these pairs were Amelia Ross and Mary Edwards.

Mary is a 76-year-old retired(退休的) nurse. She lives by herself. She likes meeting new people and keeping healthy, so she goes to dancing classes twice a week. Amelia is a 14-year-old student. She loves music and wants to be a singer. In her free time, she likes talking with her friends on her phone and playing her guitar. She doesn't like sports.

Before Mary met Amelia, she didn't like teenagers very much. She thought they spent too much time on their phones. As for Amelia, she thought that old people were boring and strict.

When they met for the TV program, Mary was surprised that Amelia didn't do any exercise, so she invited her to a dancing class and prepared her a dancing dress. Amelia didn't really want to go, but she had a great time. Mary is really outgoing and they laughed a lot together. 

Later Amelia found out that Mary had a mobile phone but didn't know how to use it. It was still in the box! Amelia showed her how to watch videos and listen to music online. Mary didn't like the same songs as Amelia, but she enjoyed finding out new music styles. In one episode(集) of the program, she asked Amelia to sing for her. Amelia was a bit shy, but she agreed. Mary loved her voice and said she should join in the school talent show. Amelia followed this advice. It was a good idea because she won first prize! 

By the end of the program, Amelia and Mary were good friends. Amelia still goes to the dancing classes and Mary is an expert with her phone now. They say they plan to meet every week in the future.
