Family education plays a big role in one's life. Good parents will greatly influence their children. Our group wants to know what great values teenagers learn from their parents and how often they communicate with their parents. So a survey was made among 1，000 students in our school including the first，second and third students. Here are the diagrams showing the results. 

Family is the first classroom for teenagers，and parents are their first teachers. The character and habits that teenagers develop have a lot to do with their parents. Parents should pay attention to their words and acts because teenagers will follow parents' behavior. Parents should serve as role models for their teenage children. They should show positive behavior（积极行为） ，such as kindness，honesty，and respect，which their children can learn from them. By setting a good example，parents can help shape their children's character and habits in a positive way. 

Why are the leaves on trees different colors? What makes them change color? Leaves use sunlight, water, and air to make food for the trees. This way of making food is called photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is important to animals as well as plants. Some animals ea t plants. Other animals eat these animals.

Summer is playtime. For the leaves of many trees, however, it's work, work, work! The Sun is shining. The leaves are making food for the trees. The trees keep more than enough food deep inside. Leaves are green in summer because they are making food. Leaves also have orange, yellow, or brown colors inside them. During summer, those colors are covered by the green color.

Many places get colder in fall with shorter days and longer nights. Trees get less sunlight, so photosynthesis slows down. Over time, leaves stop making the green chemical. The hidden orange, yellow, and brown colors grow when that happens.

Once it gets cold enough and ice appears at night, the trees drop their leaves. They do this to keep themselves safe. If the leaves turn to ice while still on the trees, the trees can be hurt. Trees that drop their leaves are bare (光秃秃) in winter. They use the food they save in summer to get through the cold days and nights.

Spring comes before long. Ice and snow disappear and the rains come. The Sun shines, and tiny leaves grow from branches. Once again, the leaves use sunlight, water, and air to make food. The cycle(循环) begins again.

The Maya (玛雅) number system(体系) appeared in the fourth century, which was about 1,000 years earlier than the time when the European number system was created. It is different from the Arabic number system with a base 10 (十进制). The Mayan system had a base 20. This system is believed to have been used because the Mayans lived in such a warm area and there was hardly a need to wear shoes, 20 was the total number of fingers and toes, so the system was workable. Therefore, there were two important numbers in this system. Besides 20, the other important number is 5, which had a connection with the number of fingers and toes on one hand or foot.

 The Mayan system used two symbols (符号). A dot (.) was used to mean the units ( one to four) and a dash (—) meant five. The Mayans were also the first to create symbols of nothing ( or zero). The most common symbol was that of a shell but there were several other symbols. It is interesting to learn that with all of the great experts on Maths and scientists in ancient Greece and Rome, it was the Mayan Indians who came up with this symbol zero or nothing. The following picture is a form of different numbers and how they would have been written.

 From further study, people found that the 360 day calendar(日历) also came from the Mayan. They actually used base 18 when they made the calendar. Each month included 20 days with 18 months in a year. This left five days at the end of the year which was month in itself, full of danger and bad luck. In this way, the Mayans had invented the 365 day calendar.

Do you know cosmic radiation(宇宙辐射)? Have you ever seen the auroras ( 极 光 ) in the sky? Cosmic radiation creates these pretty lights in the North and South Pole areas. It seems that cosmic radiation is a beautiful gift from space. But for some people, it can be dangerous.

A 53-year-old flight attendant(空中乘务员) in South Korea, who spent about 1, 022 hours flying each year, passed away due to cancer. His death was thought to be connected to great exposure (暴露) to cosmic radiation. During his lifetime, nearly half of his flights crossed the areas in and around the North Pole, where cosmic radiation is very strong.

Cosmic radiation from space is hitting Earth nonstop, coming from both the sun and other stars in the sky.

____ . Earth's magnetic field (磁场) and atmosphere (大气层) protect us from most cosmic radiation. The magnetic field is the strongest near the equator and the weakest at the poles. People living at higher latitudes (纬度), like in Heilongjiang province, are exposed to a bit more cosmic radiation than those living at lower latitudes, like in Hainan province. Also, when you go higher in an airplane, the thin atmosphere increases exposure to cosmic radiation.

Cosmic radiation can create health risks. However, what makes cosmic radiation dangerous also makes it useful. The high speed and energy of cosmic radiation have provided wonderful ideas for treating some cancer. Scientists can now produce man-made radiation similar to cosmic radiation. Compared to the present ways of treating cancer, it can work better with less harm to healthy parts of the body around them.

 In China, people celebrate the Spring Festival on the first day of the first lunar month (阴历月). It's important for all the Chinese to {#blank#}1{#/blank#} time with their family. Children {#blank#}2{#/blank#} like this festival because they can wear new clothes and get lucky money from their grandparents, parents, uncles or aunts. We have many interesting things. On the first day of the Chinese New Year, our parents {#blank#}3{#/blank#} very early and cook dumplings. They often put coins (硬币) into some dumplings. It's meaningful. If you eat a dumpling with a coin in it, you can have good luck in the coming new year. After breakfast, we do many interesting {#blank#}4{#/blank#}. We play cards, and visit relatives (亲戚) and friends. We sit around and eat many kinds of {#blank#}5{#/blank#} foods. We all have a good time.
