Mount Qomolangma is the highest mountain in the world. It is in Asia, which is home to all five of the world's highest mountains. Mount Qomolangma's peak (顶峰) is 5.5 miles above sea level. That is very high! So many climbers have tried to climb to the top of it to prove (证明) themselves. The first people to reach the peak were Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. Since then, thousands of people have succeeded in climbing to the peak of Mount Qomolangma.

One of the most successful climbers is Erik Weihenmayer. Like all who try to climb this huge mountain, Erik faced strong winds, snow, and avalanches (雪崩). However, what really made Erik's climb unbelievable is the fact that he can't see anything. After losing his vision (视力) at age 13, Erik began climbing at age 16. He has climbed the tallest mountains on all seven continents (大陆). Erik became the first blind person to reach the peak of Mount Qomolangma.

At the age of 32, Erik began his climb as part of a 19-member team. His team wore bells (铃) that he could follow during his climb, and teammates were quick to warn him of such things as a big drop on the right or a rock to the left. Erik also used long climbing poles (爬杆) and an ice ax (冰斧) to feel his way across the ice, rock, and snow on the mountain.

During his climb, Erik faced many dangers. The higher Erik climbed, the thinner the air became, so he wore an oxygen mask. This helped him breathe (呼吸) as he climbed higher and higher. It took Erik about two and a half months to reach the top of this unbelievable mountain.

Teachers help us to be good students and people. So we should thank them for their work. In China, we have Teachers' Day on September 10th. On that day, we say thanks to our teachers. But how do students in the US thank their teachers?

Schools in the US have a whole week in May to appreciate their teachers! Teacher Appreciate Day is on Tuesday of that week. They have parties with gifts and snacks that week. Students in the US like to give small gifts to their teachers, and the teachers love getting thank-you notes from their students. Teachers also like getting trinkets from students.

Should we say thanks to our teachers only on Teachers' Day? No. We should thank our teachers all the time. Always show our love to our teachers. It helps them do a good job.

Idea for next trip: Changsha, Hunan

For his eleventh birthday, Tom was given a gift that would shape his life. On that day his father took him to the Children's Activity Centre and said he could choose any course（课程） that interested him. There was just one requirement (要求): Tom would have to promise（承诺） to study it for at least one year. 

Tom had many hobbies, but none kept his interest for more than a week or two. His mum once gave him a bag of stamps to encourage stamp collecting. That hobby lasted a week. Then his father got him some paints hoping that Tom's artistic side would shine through. Those paints were now under his bed, still unopened. This time Tom's parents would let him decide. 

Tom's eyes moved down the noticeboard that listed (列出) all the courses on offer. He stopped at "Photography". He liked the idea of taking beautiful pictures but the notice said that each student needed their own camera. Although Tom's family weren't poor, they weren't rich either, and a camera cost a lot of money. He continued looking. 

The next course to catch his eye was "Language Art". He didn't even know what that meant. His father explained that it taught people how to make public speeches（演讲）. Tom, a shy boy, could think of nothing worse. Then he saw "cooking", which sounded like something he'd like to do. It was inexpensive and convenient(方便的). It could be done alone and it was also creative. 

Based on（基于） Tom's hobby history, his dad had doubts (怀疑), but he agreed. Much to his parents' surprise, he practiced at home and made delicious meals for his family. Everyone looked forward to birthdays, when they could eat his cakes. Tom got great satisfaction from the pleasure his food brought to others. 

The months turned to years but his hobby never changed again. Now Tom is an adult and runs a successful restaurant. When customers（顾客） say they enjoy his meal, he still gets the same pleasure he did as a child, and remembers the special gift he received all those years ago. 

Most of us cannot imagine modern life without social media (社交媒体). We use it almost every day in order to keep up with what is happening in our friends' lives, or find out the latest information.

 The greatest advantage of social media is that we can connect with people much more easily. We are still able to keep in touch with our friends if they are far away. Also, it makes it easier for us to make friends, especially for those who are afraid of making friends face to face. Are you shy? If yes, social media has probably helped.

 Social media is also ideal for making yourself heard. Anyone with a voice can express(表达) it. Anyone with a talent is free to show it. Moreover, anyone with a smartphone and the Internet can be a reporter. As a result, it has become much faster to cover the news than ever before.

 Social media, on the other hand, can make us less confident sometimes. A study found that the more a person uses social media, the sadder he feels about his own life. One reason for this is that people around us put colourful information and perfect pictures online in order to show off their best moments. So we often get an incorrect sense of how wonderful their lives are, compared to our own.

 Social media does not cause sadness; it simply provides a tool for us to use. Is it good or bad? Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai says, "What is interesting is the power and influence of social media. We must try to use social media in a good way". After all, you decide how you use this powerful tool.
