Jack's friend Sally isn't fine these days.

One day she asks Jack for help. And she tells Jack about her eating habits. For breakfast, she always eats some bread. For lunch, she always has some chicken. She likes eating ice-cream and a hamburger in the evening.

"They're not healthy for you, Sally," Jack says. "I know, but I like them," Sally says.

"What about vegetables? Do you like eating carrots?" Jack asks.

"No, I don't," Sally says.

"Sally, don't eat ice-cream. You must eat some vegetables and fruit. They are good for you," Jack says.

"I think you're right," Sally says.

In the next days, Sally always eats vegetables and fruit. And she is well now.

I was ten years old when my mother died. Ten years old on that very day, my mother organized a party for me at the hospital. She made sure everyone there brought me presents. 

Nurse Ms. Louise gave me a fountain pen. "Now you can write beautiful stories, Katie," She said. Then the twins in the same room gave me a pink diary. A little too cute for me. I mean, I read Stephen King, the novelist and wanted to write like him. There was one box they held out till the end. It was a large box, carefully wrapped (包裹) with exquisite paper and ribbons. "Who's it from?" I asked. 

"It's you," Mama mouthed, hard breathing, but she smiled a very small smile at me. I read her lips. She meant it was a present for me. 

"Of course, it is," I said happily. 

I took off the paper carefully. It was a beautiful box made of heavy cardboard. Then I opened it slowly and...

"It's empty," I said. "Is this a joke?" I turned to ask Mama, but she was gone, no breath. 

"Mama!" I cried. I screamed. 

I cried steadily for a week at night, and for about a year, I stopped writing and reading. I felt empty and angry. 

One night, I woke up remembering how she had said, "It's you." Not, "It's for you," just "It's you." Mama had been a writer herself. She didn't use words carelessly. But, why? 

I took the box out and opened it. It was as empty as the day I had put it away. 

 "It's you," I whispered to the box. Suddenly I knew. 

I was the box, solid and strong, maybe even beautiful on the outside. But I had to fill up the box to make it all it could be. I had to fill me up as well. 

Then ____. The first thing I put on paper was about that birthday. I kept it in the box, and pretty soon that box was overflowing with stories. And poems. And memories. 

And so was I.

Dick didn't spend the money he made on games or snacks, he has s{#blank#}1{#/blank#} up money for the last two years so he could buy his friend Brandon a new electric wheelchairs (电动轮椅). 

Dick and Brandon have been friends {#blank#}2{#/blank#} years. Though both of them go to Caddo Hills High School, Brandon has a h{#blank#}3{#/blank#} time getting through the hallways. Because Brandon uses a push wheelchair to get from class to class, he says his arms start to h{#blank#}4{#/blank#} after using it for so long. 

Dick spent the last two years t{#blank#}5{#/blank#} (take) a part-time job at a car repairing shop. He really wanted to buy Brandon an electric wheelchair. Dick f{#blank#}6{#/blank#} (final) could buy the wheelchair last month, and when he brought it to Brandon in class last month, Brandon could hardly hold back his feelings. He said, "I was just crying everywhere. I can't b{#blank#}7{#/blank#} he did that for me."

"Tt's been my d{#blank#}8{#/blank#} to have one of these," Brandon a{#blank#}9{#/blank#} "and now it came true."

"Dick has had some bad experiences over the last year, so being able to help somebody else has really brought him out-being able to know that he made a {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (different)," Calleen said. 

Martin Strel is a swimmer, best known for swimming the world's big rivers. He was born in 1954. He taught himself to swim when he was six and became a professional (职业的) swimmer in 1978. Martin holds Guinness World Records for swimming the Danube River, the Mississippi River, the Yangtze River and the Amazon River. 

Of all his achievements, the greatest is his Amazon River swim. The Amazon is known as the largest and most dangerous river in the world. Several swimmers had tried to swim it, but all failed. Martin decided to go all out and make history. He wanted to show the world that people could achieve their dreams with hard work and perseverance (毅力). On April 7th, 2007, Martin Strel completed his Amazon River all the way from Atalaya (Peru) to the Atlantic Ocean at Belem (Brazil). He struggled (奋战) with the river for 66 days and swam 3, 274 miles in total. He became a worldwide hero. 

Many people still cannot believe what he has done so far, so that is why they sometimes describe him as "Fishman", "Human Fish" or even "the Craziest Man in the World". 

In 2009, American filmmakers produced a documentary (纪录片) called Big River Man. And the book, The Man Who Swam the Amazon, has been sold in many countries. It tells us an inspirational story of perseverance and hard work, which has encouraged many people. 

Martin doesn't swim for money. Instead, he swims to teach people about the importance of keeping water clean. 

Martin has always been looking for the challenges (挑战) of the impossible. What is his next?

Today, roller-skating is easy and fun. But a long time ago, it wasn't 1  at all. Before 1760, no one had any ideas of roller-skating. That 2  because of a man named Joseph Merlin. He liked to make things and play the violin in his free time. Joseph Merlin was a man full of ideas and dreams. People called him a 3 . 

One day Joseph Merlin was invited to a 4 . He was very pleased and excited. As the day of the party came near, Joseph Merlin began to think 5  he could make an amazing entrance(登场) at the party. He had an idea. He thought everyone at the party would show much interest if he could 6  into the room. 

Joseph Merlin tried different ways to make 7  roll. Finally, he decided to put two wheels 8  each shoe. These were the first roller skates. Joseph Merlin was 9  of his invention. And he dreamed of arriving at the party on wheels while playing the 10 . 

On the night of the party, Joseph Merlin rolled into the room playing his violin happily. Everyone was 11  to see him. But there was just one problem. Joseph Merlin couldn't 12  his roller skates. He rolled on and on. 13 , he ran into a huge mirror that was hanging on the wall. The mirror fell down and broke into pieces. Joseph Merlin's idea was so good that 14  forgot his special entrance for a long time. But could he 15  the problem of stopping his roller skates?
