Tom Avery is one of the only 41 people ever to have reached both the South and North Poles. He was born in December 1975 and brought up in England, Brazil and France. His passion(强烈爱好) for adventure began when he was just seven years old and first read about the expeditions(探险) of famous explorers.Perhaps this was the start of his plan to put together the ultimate(终极的) joumey —— to the very top of the world, the North Pole, following the route taken by Robert Peary in his 1909 adventure.

Both Peary and Avery set off from Cape Columbia in Canada. Peary had a larger team and in fact had four support groups. Every 160 kilometers, a group would leave plenty of food and then turn back. The team therefore got smaller the further north they travelled. While Avery didn't have as many on his team, they did have food dropped by plane for them at four locations.

Avery's team also had the obvious benefit of modern technology, but Avery doesn't believe this made a big difference. He credits (把……归功于) his team's success to the 16 Inuit dogs that pull the sledges(雪橇)."It wouldn't have been possible without them,"he said."Your speed depends on the dogs and how quickly you can get a sledge through the ice."His team were travelling at the end of winter and this meant that the ice was thinner and could easily break under a person's weight. This was an added danger.

Another difference between both men's journeys was that Peary was far more experienced than Avery and had already been on several trips to the Arctic.

Peary claimed(声称) to have reached the North Pole in 39 days, but some historians argue that this was not possible. Avery's team actually beat this time and became the fastest to get there on foot. Avery says,"We told everyone we could do it and that we wouldn't fail. But it certainly wasn't easy."

Most people agree that honesty is a good thing.But does Mother Nature agree？Animals can't talk，but can they lie with their bodies and behavior？Animal experts may not call it lying，but they do agree that many animals behave dishonestly to fool other animals.Dishonesty often helps them survive（生存）. 

Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals.A bird called the plover sometimes pretends（假装） to be hurt in order to protect its young.When an enemy gets close to its nest，the plover pretends to have a broken wing.The enemy follows the "hurt" adult，leaving the baby birds safe. 

Another kind of bird，the scrub jay，buries（埋） its food so it always has something to eat.Scrub jays also steal food.They watch where others bury their food and steal it.But clever scrub jays seem to know when others are watching them.So they get back later，dig the food and bury it again somewhere else. 

Chimpanzees（黑猩猩） can also be sneaky.After a fight，the losing chimpanzee will give its hand to the other.When the winning chimpanzee puts out its hand，too，the chimpanzees are friendly again.But an animal expert once saw a losing chimpanzee take the winner's hand and start fighting again.When chimpanzees find food，it's natural for them to cry out.Then other chimpanzees come running.But some clever chimpanzees learn to cry very softly when they find food.That way，other chimpanzees don't hear them，and they don't need to share the food.

Did you know something about sign language（手语）? Sign language is the main way for deaf people to communicate. Since they can't hear, talking to hearing people can be hard. Luckily, sign language interpreters（译员） are there to help.

Hao Shuxin, 24, sees sign language as her mother language, because her parents are deaf. "I picked up sign language before I could even talk," she said. In2018, she became a sign language interpreter in Chongqing. Her work takes her to places like courts（法庭）, where she interprets for deaf people in legal（法律上的） cases.

Since sign language has fewer words, Hao often meets difficult words without direct match. In such situations, she carefully breaks down the meaning for deaf people. There are also grammatical differences between Chinese and sign language. "For example, the words 'put out a fire' are signed as 'a fire put out' in sign language, as deaf people describe what they see first," Hao explained.

Hao feels stressed at work because being correct is important in interpretations. Her worry also comes from the fact that sign language has "dialects". The same word can be expressed with different hand gestures（手势） depending on where a deaf person is from. "For example, people in Shanxi and Chongqing use different gestures for the word 'true'," Hao explained. Having traveled to over 30 cities in China, she has learned about the special ways for deaf people across the country to use sign language.

In her spare time, Hao reads many law books and talks with lawyers and her deaf workmates to improve her ability. "My parents are deaf, so I understand the difficulties faced by the deaf community. I want to do everything I can to help them, and I hope more people will join us," Hao said.
