Months ago, a new kind of transportation came out. A company called Sky Drive gave a demonstration (示范) of its new flying, the SD-03. The small car 1 around for four minutes, staying about three to six feet 2 the ground. The SD-03 is powered by batteries (电池) and has eight motors (发动机).

Zhou Dao's grandfather has a hearing problem. During a family party last year, Zhou Dao noticed something. His grandfather sat quietly by himself. The old man was unable to join the talks.

Zhou Dao was sad about this. "Grandpa always reads subtitles (字幕) to watch TV," he thought. "Why can't we put words on our talks?" Then, Zhou Dao began working on that idea. He spent about half a year developing a kind of smart glasses. These smart glasses help users "read" spoken words.

The glasses are connected to a smartphone. There is a microphone on the glasses. It records audio (录制音频) and sends it to the phone. A piece of software turns the audio into words. People can see the words on the glasses.

This allows users with hearing problems to understand others during the talks well. Now Zhou Dao's grandfather can wear the glasses and speak to someone else face to face or over the phone.

Zhou Dao was happy to help his grandfather. Slowly, more and more people in need can wear this kind of glasses.

Many westerners find it interesting that Chinese people always carry a vacuum cup (保温杯) .If you go to a western restaurant, they usually serve you a cup of cold water with ice. And when you ask if they can change to hot water, you may receive a strange look from the waiter or people nearby. Hot water? Seriously?

So hot water VS cold water, which one is better?

By 1930s, the water supplies(供水) was polluted. In order to prevent people from diseases, the government suggested drinking boiled water, because they considered it a way to kill off bacteria (细菌).

People at that time always boiled water and stored it in vacuum bottle to keep it warm for the day. Even now, you can find hot water everywhere, in schools, factories, and offices across the country. While for western countries, many people died of the plague (鼠疫) .They took water quality seriously from then on, so that people can drink water directly rather than boil it.

You may also discover that Chinese people prefer hot meals. Some parents always teach their children to drink hot soup with meals, because they think mixing cold water with hot meals is really bad for the stomach, and cold water may cause digestive (消化) problems, while hot water helps digestion.

According to the eating habits in western countries, they prefer "raw" food, so they also prefer their water "raw". They also like hamburgers and fried food, which are all with high calorie (高热量), so they need cold drinks to cool them off.

Drinking hot or cold water also has something to do with medicine beliefs. In traditional Chinese medicine, Chinese people consider drinking hot water increases blood circulation (循环) and washes away the coldness in one's body, and thus eases pain. However, most westerners believe that drinking hot water may weaken your body. Drinking hot water too often will make your body unable to stand water below your body temperature.

You may find out that there is no answer to this question. The causes are various, so don't feel strange next time you see a Chinese ask for hot water, just show your respect.

When Emily Cummins was a teenager, her grandfather had an illness — a lot of pain in his hands and fingers. One day, Emily saw that he had difficulty getting toothpaste(牙膏) out of the tube(管). She made an invention that helped him with this, and won the Young Engineer for Britain Award for her toothpaste dispenser(自动取物器). 

A few years later, Emily learnt that some African countries are short of water. The women and children there often walk many kilometres a day to get water for their villages. They usually put the buckets(桶) on their heads. They have to walk carefully so as not to waste the water. Emily's invention is a simple water carrier. It makes it possible for the women to transport up to five buckets of water each time. 

Her latest project is a simple fridge that runs without electricity, but only needs the energy that comes from the sun. There are now thousands of families in villages in Zambia, Namibia and South Africa who use it. 

Emily has already won several prizes for her inventions and was named one of the world's top ten young people. And Emily often visits schools and talks to teenagers. She wants to encourage them to come up with new ideas that make the world a better place. 

 In 1986, something happened in Italy. An American fast food restaurant—a MoDonald's— opened in Rome. One man, Carlo Petrini, decided to fight back. "Fast food is the enemy," he said. In 1989, Petrini started a group called Slow Food.

 The members of Slow Food have many ideas in common. "There are a lot of problems with food today," they say. Fast food is one of them. For one thing, it's not healthy food, compared to slow food. Also, it's the same everywhere!"That's boring," they say.

 Slow Food members worry about a second problem, too. The number of some types of plants and animals is reducing, including a kind of tree in Morocco, a special kind of Austrian Cow, and wild rice in the United States.

 There's a third problem. Big companies produce much of our food today. They sell their products in many places, so they want products that can travel well. Big growers want the kinds of fruit and vegetables that look good after a long trip. As a result, they add something to get what they hope for. But how do their apples, lettuce, and tomatoes taste? That's less important to them. So now we have more trouble finding good-tasting food.

 It's something usual to eat foods from far away today. For example, food travels an average distance of 1,300 miles to reach dinner tables in the United States. Slow Food members say, "People should buy more local food. It's fresh and it's part of our culture."

 Fast food is reaching more and more parts of the world. But slow food is getting its message to more and more people too.
