A few days ago, I ran into a stranger as he passed by. I said sorry to him. And we were very 1 . Then we went on our way after saying goodbye.

Later in the 2 at home, as I cooked our meal, my daughter Betty walked up to me, very quietly. When I turned around, I 3 knocked her down. "Get out of the way!" I shouted angrily. She ran away, 4 .

 There are many deserts on the earth. And the following are some facts you may find interesting.

What are deserts like?

 Deserts can be hot and dry places. Rain may not fall there for months or years. Some deserts are sandy and stony. Deserts can also be very wind y places. The wind can change the shape of the deserts. It moves sand around from place to place.

 Temperatures in the desert can vary greatly. During the daytime, the temperature may reach 40℃ even in the shade. At night, deserts can become very cold. In winter, there may even be a frost early in the morning.

Living in the desert

 The camel is sometimes called" the ship of the desert". It stores food in its hump and can go for days without water. It has large feet which help it not to fall into the soft sand. Its long eyelashes keep out the sand during sandstorms.

 An oasis(绿洲) is an area of the desert where water may be found. People and animals visit an oasis for water and food. Plants grow at an oasis. Some farmers are able to grow crops here.

The Arabian Desert

 The Arabian Desert lies between the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf. Oil under parts of the desert has made some countries in the area very rich. The government has spent money building fine cities with lovely parks and lakes, and people live a comfortable life there.

Once or twice, there was crying and sighing (叹息) from a little leaf, as leaves often do when the wind is blowing. The tree said, "What's the matter, little leaf ?"

"The wind, " said the leaf, "just told me that one day it would pull me off and throw me on the ground. "

" Don't be afraid, " the tree said. "Hold on , and you shall not go off until you are ready. "

So the leaf stopped sighing and went on singing. It grew all summer long until October. When the bright days of autumn came, the leaf saw all the leaves around growing very beautiful. Some were yellow, some were brown, and many were colorful. Then the leaf asked the tree what this meant (意味着).

The tree said, " All these leaves are getting ready to fly away, and they have put on these colors because of their joy (快乐). "

The little leaf started to want to go and grew colorful thinking of it. Then it saw that the branches (树枝) of the tree had no bright colors on them and asked why.

"We must keep on our working clothes because we don't finish our work, " said the tree, "but your clothes are for holidays because your work is now over. "

Just then, the wind came, and the leaf let go (放手) without thinking. The wind took it up and turned it over and over. Then it fell slowly down on the ground, among hundreds of leaves.

One day, New York was struck(侵袭) by a terrible rainstorm. The streets were full 1  water and the underground system almost came to a stop. 

Unluckily, this happened during the morning rush hours. Many people who were going to work were 2  to go home. Some tried their best to 3  a taxi or to get on a bus. Still others faced the storm 4 . walking miles to get to work. 

I happened to be one of the people on the way to work that morning. I went from an underground line to another only to find that most service had 5 . After making my way through crowds of people, I finally found an underground line that was 6 .

①It can be really embarrassing if someone sees you talking to yourself. But don't feel bad about it! Talking to yourself actually has a lot of advantages.

②You probably know that thinking is good for the brain. It helps us do things like making plans and managing our feelings. Talking to yourself out loud is like showing this quiet inner(内在的) speech. It can help us do better in different areas like school, sports and work.

③Talking to yourself, especially in the third person, can help us manage bad feelings. "Talking to yourself in the third person is like giving yourself advice," said Jason Moser,a professor(教授) from Michigan State University, US. Moser uses himself in an example. He does not like flying, but he has to fly often for his work. So when he feels nervous or afraid during a flight, he talks to himself, "Well, you know, Jason knows air travel is very safe. And Jason has been on thousands of flights." This can help us to see things from a different aspect(角度) especially when we' re feeling sad or angry.

④When encouragement comes from oneself, it adds to self-confidence. A study invited 72 tennis players to take part in some matches. Researchers put the players into two groups: one group that said nothing while playing, and the other that talked to themselves while playing. They found that the self-talkers showed more confidence and played better than those in the silent group.

⑤Self-talk also helps to improve memory. Researchers tested four different ways to memorize things: reading silently, reading aloud, listening to someone else read and listening to a recording of oneself reading. Those who read out loud recalled(回忆起) the information the best, researchers said in their study. It's because the information will probably become a long-term memory if it is said out loud.

Long long ago a man went to India and he had never been there before. When he got there, he saw a lot of 1 , but much of it was expensive because they couldn't grow much for there was little water.2 he saw a big basket of some very red and long fruit. And it was the 3 in the shop.
