Many of our conversations are gossip(闲话).I have noticed three effects of gossip: it can hurt people; it can give gossipers a strange kind of satisfaction; and it can cause social pressure in a group.

An important negative(负面的）effect of gossip is that it can hurt the person being talked about. Usually, gossip spreads information about a topic that a person prefers to keep secret. The more embarrassing or shameful the secret is, the juicier the gossip it makes. Probably the worst type of gossip is the absolute lie. People often think of gossipers as harmless, but cruel lies can cause pain.

If we know that gossip can be harmful, then why do so many of us do it? The answer lies in another effect of gossip. Sharing the latest rumor (传言) can make a person feel important because he or she knows something that others don't. Similarly, hearing the latest rumor can make a person feel like part of the "in group". In other words, gossip is satisfying because it gives people a sense of belonging or even superiority (优越感). 

Gossip also can have a third effect: it strengthens unwritten, unspoken rules about how people should act. For example, if everybody you hang around with is laughing at what John wore or what Jane said, then you can be sure that wearing or saying something similar will get you the same kind of negative attention. The dos and don'ts carried through gossip will never show up in any student handbook.

Next time you feel the urge (冲动) to spread the latest news, think about why you want to gossip and what effects your "juicy story" might have.

Over 2. 300 students and teachers from two middle schools in Guyuan, Ningxia, walked to the Renshanhe Martyrs Cemetery (烈士陵园) on April 1, before Qingming Festival. 

The group started walking at about 430 a. m. They walked 27 kilometers to get to the cemetery. Although it was a little difficult for the students to walk along the mountain roads, no one fell behind (掉队). 

On the trip, the students took red flags and sang songs (歌曲) . When the girls had difficulty climbing up, the boys gave them their hands. The group arrived at the cemetery at about 10 a. m. After a few activities, the students and teachers went back to Guyuan on foot. 

To make sure all the students were safe(安全的), the two schools did many things before the long walk. " We started to let the students take physical exercise a month ago, " one teacher said. " When they did morning exercise and had P. E. classes, they practiced a lot. It was really a challenge for the students to finish the 54—kilometer trip, but everyone tried very hard to make sure they could do it. 

The schools want their students to remember the martyrs. They also want their students to keep their bodies and minds healthy by doing this activity. 

When I was told that my family decided to move from the only home that I had ever known, I ran into the garden and sat alone, crying, as tears were from my heart. Suddenly I felt a hand rest on my shoulder. It was my grandfather. 

"It isn't easy, is it, Billy?" he said softly, sitting down on the steps beside me. 

"Grandpa, "I replied through my tears, "how can I ever say goodbye to you and all my friends?"

"Goodbye is such a sad word, " he said. "Although we seem to have so many ways of saying goodbye, they all have one thing in common: sadness. "

Then he gently took my hand in his and took me to his favourite place in the garden, where a huge red rose bush(玫瑰丛) grew alone. 

"What do you see here, Billy?" he asked. 

I looked at the flowers, "I see something soft and beautiful, Grandpa. "

Kneeling, he pulled me close. "It isn't just the roses that are beautiful, Billy. It's that special place in your heart that makes them so. "

I saw my grandfather's tears. I had never seen him cry before. 

"I planted these roses a long long time ago. I put them into the ground the day my first son was born. That boy's name was Billy, just like yours. I used to watch him pick roses for his mother. One day a terrible war came, and my son went away to fight for the country. Three months later a letter came. My son had died in a village in Italy. All I could think of was that the last thing I said to him in his life was goodbye. "

Grandpa slowly stood up. He said, "Don't ever say goodbye, Billy. Don't ever give in to the sadness and loneliness of that word. I want you to remember the happiness of those times when you first said hello to your friends. Take that special hello into your heart. When you and your friends must part, I want you to reach deep within yourself and bring back that first hello. "

A year and a half later, my grandfather became badly ill. When he returned from the hospital, the family members were summoned(召集). It was time for the family members to say their goodbyes. 

When it came to my turn, I realised how tired he looked. His eyes were closed, and his breathing(呼吸) was slow and hard. I took his hand as gently as he had once taken mine. 

"Hello, Grandpa, "I said. His eyes slowly opened. 

"Hello, my friend, " he said, with a smile. 

With most Chinese people speaking Mandarin, or putonghua, some local dialects, or fangyan, are in danger of disappearing. To save them, the Chinese government started the Chinese Language Resources(资源) Protection Project in 2015.

This project looked at how people talk in 1,712 places. Their languages included 103 dialects that are almost gone. Over five years, more than 350 universities and research groups joined in, along with over 4,500 experts(专家)and more than 6,000 dialect speakers.

This project has helped China to build the largest language resource library in the world. Now a dialect library has been built online, where people can learn dialects from over 5.6 million recordings and over 5 million videos. At present, the project has entered into the second stage. It plans to create digital tools like apps and mobile dictionaries to help people learn dialects.

Why is it important to protect the dialect culture? According to British expert Harold Palmer, dialects are the key to keeping local cultures, because they faithfully show the histories, the beliefs and the fixed ideas of an area.

Zhang Hongming, another expert, talked about the worrying situation of dialects. "For about over 10 years, in the Wu dialect areas such as Shanghai and Suzhou, children aged 6 to 15 can understand but hardly speak the dialect. Besides, young people above 15 years old sometimes speak it, but not very well. If this keeps happening, the dialect might disappear." he said.

So, not only the country but every one of us should do our bit to protect dialect culture.
