Jane works in a small office. Her boss, although kind, is sometimes a bit foolish. He likes to keep lots of plants in front of their office to attract(吸引) customers.

It is quite useful. When Jane is meeting new customers almost every customer likes to have a look at the colorful plants.

Jane's another work is to water the plants. This is one of her favorite jobs to do around the office, because it allows her to spend some time outside away from her desk. She does it every morning before starting her work.

One afternoon, her boss came to her desk and kindly asked her to water the plants. "But sir, it's raining outside all morning..." she said.

"Oh! I see, so you didn't water them today. Why don't you take my umbrella when you water them?" the boss said.

Some people say it is not easy for a middle-aged person to learn a foreign language. But is it{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(real)true?

Several years ago, I worked for {#blank#}2{#/blank#}English newspaper which was doing such a research. They asked me to learn a new language for one month. Then I had to go to the country and do some "tests" {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(see)if I could "survive(挺过来)" in different situations.

I chose Spanish(西班牙语)and did a one-month course at a language school and{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(find)that some Spanish words are very similar to English ones. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}example, hola isn't very different from "hello". Of course, there are other things which are more difficult. In Spanish you have to change the verbs(动词)for each person. But my{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(big)problem of all was the pronunciation. I found {#blank#}7{#/blank#}was very difficult to pronounce some letters in Spanish, especially r and j. So I had to download {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(sentence)onto my phone and I listened and practised them again and again.

A month later I went to Spain. A Spanish teacher {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(call)Paula came and began the test. "Will I survive?" I wasn't sure enough but {#blank#}10{#/blank#}I wished I would!

A teacher taught her students to play a game. The teacher told each child to bring a 1 with a few potatoes. Each potato was given a name of a person that the child hated, so the number of potatoes that a child would put into the bag would 2 the number of people the child hated.

Some children had two potatoes. Some had three and others even had five potatoes. The teacher then told them to 3 the bag wherever they went for a week.

As the days went by, the children started to complain(抱怨)about the unpleasant 4 coming from the rotten(腐烂的)potatoes. And the students with five potatoes also had to carry 5 bags.

After a week, the teacher asked, "How did you 6 ?" The children started complaining about the 7 they had to go through. For example, when they carried the heavy and smelly potatoes everywhere they went, people always covered their noses and moved away from them 8

Then the teacher said. "This is the 9 situation when you carry your hate for somebody inside your heart. The smell of hate will 10 your heart and you will carry it with you wherever you go."

"If you can not stand the smell of rotten potatoes for just one week, can you imagine what it is like to have the smell of hate in your heart for your lifetime?"

 阅读下面短文,在空白处填入一个适当的词,或填入括号中所给单词的正确形式且不超过三个词。

One day, a fox {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (walk) through the woods when he saw some tasty grapes hanging from a branch high above him. He was quite{#blank#}2{#/blank#} (hunger).

At first, the fox tried to jump in the air and grab the grapes. But with each jump, he was just inches away{#blank#}3{#/blank#} the grapes. As he jumped again, he was getting much{#blank#}4{#/blank#} (far). He tried taking a few steps back and doing a running jump at the grapes after{#blank#}5{#/blank#} short rest--but again, he could not reach them. He even tried to climb the tree to reach the grapes, but his paws (爪子) weren't strong enough for him{#blank#}6{#/blank#} (pull) himself up the tree. How he wished he had the same paws {#blank#}7{#/blank#} a monkey!   He sat and stared at the grapes{#blank#}8{#/blank#} (angry). Just then, a bear happened to walk by the fox. He saw the fox looking at the grapes. The fox turned to him and said, "Never mind. Those grapes probably don't taste good anyway." And with that, he tried once more and {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (leave). The bear reached up, grabbed the grapes and ate them. They were, of course, quite delicious. It seemed that the fox decided that the grapes must be bad simply {#blank#}10{#/blank#} he couldn't have them.
