Everybody hates rats. But rats may soon be man's new best friends.

    What happens after an earthquake? We send in rescue (援救) dogs. Why? Because they can smell people. Dogs save lives. They help rescuers to find living people. But dogs are big and they can't get into small space. So now a new research project is using a smaller animal to save lives: the rat.

    How does it work? First, the rat is trained to smell people. When this happens, the rat's brain gives a signal. This is sent to a small radio on its back, and then the rescuers follow the radio signals. When the rat's brain activity jumps, the rescuers know that someone is alive. The rat has smelled that person.

    Although there are already robots which can do this job, rats are better. "Robots' noses don't work well when there are other smells around. Rats are good at that," says a scientist. Rats can also see in the dark. They are cheaper and quicker to train than dogs, and unlike robots, they don't need electricity.

    The "rat project" is not finished, but a scientist says, "It would be fantastic. A rat could get into space we couldn't get to and a rat would get out if it wasn't safe." Perhaps for the first time in history, people will be happy to see a rat in a building (but only after an earthquake, of course).

Jay and Joan like to spend the winter holiday with their mum and dad. This morning they were all going sledding (滑雪橇).There was a heavy snow last night. The hill at the park was great for sledding. Jay and Joan asked their parents to take them out .Their parents agreed(同意).

They all put on warm clothes and boots (靴子).They brought hot drinks，put the sleds in the car and drove to the park.

Jay and his dad went down the hill on one sled. Joan and her mum went down on the other sled .They went fast. The snow flew on their faces. They should and laughed. Sledding was fun.

After playing for two hours，they took a short break. They wanted to have a hot drink to get out of the cold，so they went into a warm house. They talked about their fun day there.

Soon it was time to go back home. Jay and Joan were very happy today.

I am the only child in my family. My parents always care too much about me. They m{#blank#}1{#/blank#} every minute of my life. They help me do almost every {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (任务). Actually, I'm really unsatisfied and bored with their o{#blank#}3{#/blank#}. I even wish I could stay at home alone every day. My wish came true yesterday. My parents would be away for a {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(会议). In the afternoon, after I saw my parents off, I hurried home, threw myself onto the {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (沙发) and watched TV. I didn't turn it off until {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(午夜). Today nobody w{#blank#}7{#/blank#} me up, so I got up very late. I had to go to school with an {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(空的) stomach. What was worse, I didn't finish my homework because I played all day long yesterday. When school was over, I hurried home and tried to cook some s{#blank#}9{#/blank#} food. Unluckily, I didn't make it. At last, I only had a c{#blank#}10{#/blank#} of milk. What a bad day!

Mr. Stevens walked around the class handing out math books. Then he returned to the front of the class and looked at us. We stared (盯着看) back. "What are you waiting for? Get started!" he said. 

We looked at him, confused (困惑的). A student asked, "Mr. Stevens, aren't you going to teach us first?" Mr. Stevens replied, "You're smart kids. Open the book and get to it. If you have any questions, raise your hand, and I'll come to help you."

My friend Paul and I opened our books to the first page. A competition began. Paul and I spent all our free time at home working through the lessons. Mr. Stevens, true to his word, helped anyone who had a problem. It was not a normal way of teaching but it worked well. Paul and I worked like dogs and finished two and one half math books that first year. 

It was a turning point in my life. Mr. Stevens made me realize I was good at math and that I was able to reach the top of any class I attended. I kept learning that way all through my high school and university. 

I've carried Mr. Stevens' lesson with me all my life. Whenever I am faced with a new challenge, I think of the first math class of my junior high school. Instead of sitting around, I just get started. Then before I know it, the challenge has been dealt with.

 From voluntarily collecting historical materials related to the Great Wall in his Shanxi hometown in Province to becoming an official cultural heritage(遗产) protector, Yuan Xuerui has spent over twenty years safeguarding the ancient wonder.

 China's Great Wall is one of the great wonders of the world and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built from 3 BC to the 1800s on the north of the country, the Great Wall has a total length of more than 20,000 kilometers.

 Yuan, 55, was born in Qingxibao at the foot of the ancient wall in Shanxi's Daixian county, which is part of the city of Xinzhou. His love for the ancient wall encouraged him to protect it, and when not engaged(从事) in farm work, he spent most of his time walking along the wall to collect bricks that had fallen off due to the long time and prepare for repairs. "What others think as a difficult and dull task of cultural heritage protection often brings me unexpected discoveries," Yuan said.

 He officially became a cultural heritage worker in 2018, and since then his duties have expanded from collecting bricks to organizing ancient documents related to the wall to better tell stories about it. As a heritage worker, Yuan has come to understand the meaning of the Great Wall. "Each brick has endured(忍受) the test of time over hundreds of years-in some cases more than a thousand-carrying rich historical memories," he said.

"This summer, Yuan organized a campaIgn(活动) to encourage people to collect bricks for the future repair of the wall. Many bricks were taken away from the Great Wall by local villagers to build their houses in the1960s and 1970s.("As villagers' awareness of the need to protect the wall has grown, nowadays, when locals find fallen bricks along the Great Wall, they will pick them up," he said. "If they see rubbish, they will also pick it up and throw it into bins."
