An American named Crum invented potato chips in 1853, although that was not his intention (意图). He was a chef(厨师长) at a beautiful restaurant in Saratoga Springs, New York. A regular dish on the menu was fried (油炸的) potatoes, which was an idea that had started in France. At that time, French fried potatoes were cut into thick slices (片).

      One day, a dinner guest at the restaurant sent back his fried potatoes to the chef because he did not like them so thick. So Mr. Crum cut the potatoes a little thinner and fried them. The guest did not like those either. That made Mr. Crum angry, so he thought he would just show the man. He sliced the potatoes paper-thin and fried them, thinking that the man would say nothing about it. However, to his surprise, the man loved the thin potatoes very much. Other guests tried them and also liked them. So, Mr. Crum's potato chips were added to the menu. They were called Saratoga Chips.

      Finally, Mr. Crum opened his own restaurant to sell his famous chips. Now potato chips are packaged (包装) and sold in stores.

    Kathy could still remember the night she had to leave her home Hungary in a hurry. It was the terrible beginning of World War Ⅱ and her family had to leave their country as soon as possible. She quickly filled a bag with a few pieces of clothing, her diary, and her treasure—a beautiful silk scarf (围巾).

    Kathy and her best friend, Monica, had asked their parents to buy them matching scarves. They each would wear the scarf as a symbol of their friendship. Kathy had no idea that she was going to America that night and would not be returning forever.

    Kathy kept that special silk scarf as a treasure for many years. One day she decided to give it to her granddaughter, Eliza, to wear to her first job interview for good luck. Kathy was afraid that Eliza would lose the scarf, but the granddaughter promised, "Don't worry, Grandma, nothing's going to happen to your scarf. You'll see. It is going to bring both of us good luck today." And with that, Eliza kissed her grandmother and left for the interview.

    That afternoon Eliza left the interview happily, feeling sure that she had got the job. So she decided to celebrate by going to a restaurant. As she was sitting at her table, she felt someone looking at her. An old woman sitting next to her could not take her eyes away from her.

    "I'm sorry, do I know you?" Eliza asked.

    "I'm sorry, dear, but you make me think of someone I once knew," the old woman replied. "My best friend looked just like you and used to wear a scarf just like the one you're wearing around your neck." Eliza listened carefully, with her eyes and mouth wide open. She had heard stories of her grandmother's best friend many times and knew the meaning of the scarf. Could this be Monica, her grandmother's childhood friend?

    Eliza introduced herself and waited to hear the name of the old woman.

    "My name's Monica, dear. I lived in Hungary as a child, but my family had to leave when I was fourteen years old. I've been living here in California ever since." said the old woman.

    Eliza could not believe her ears…

    Fifteen hours is a long time to be on a plane, but you know, Africa is a long way from America. Finally, we're in Namibia, a country in southwest Africa. Namibia is about one size of California. However, it is home to just over two million people. And the country's main airport is 45 kilometers east of its capital, Windhoek.

    Now we are in a wildlife park. We will spend five days finding ways to protect this area's wildlife. At the moment, my wife and our two kids are enjoying some local dishes. I'm talking with workers in this park. I'm so much looking forward to the following days!

    Yesterday morning, I had nothing to do. So I went to visit the Eiffel Tower, a symbol of Paris. It was my first time there, so I took a lot of photos.

    Finally, the big moment came! A lot of artists came to watch my show. It was a great success. After the show, I attended a big party. It was great, but I felt so sleepy after it.

    When I got back to my hotel, it was already1:15 am. I went to bed without washing. I just needed a good rest before my two—hour journey home by plane.

We all need good friends and want to get on well with them. But what do you do when you and your best friend have 1 ideas? At first, I didn't know what to do when this happened to my best friend Karina and me.

When we first met at a summer camp, we got along so 2 that we shared stories, laughed a lot, and quickly became inseparable(形影不离的)friends. But then something happened at a picnic. "Did you hear the news about the shopping center?" asked one of our friends Levar. "Some people plan to 3 many trees to make room for a shopping center."

"That's terrible! It will be bad for our environment(环境). We have to 4 that," I said.

"I don't think so," said Karina. "The shopping center will give people new jobs."

"But animals will 5 their homes!" I said. "I want people to have 6 , but it doesn't have to do such a terrible thing."

I wanted Karina to join me in 7 trees, but she didn't want to. I was so angry that I didn't 8 her for days. Later, my mother knew it and said to me seriously(严肃地), "No two people are the same. You should 9 each other. Don't let the 10 make you lose a good friend." After listening to my mom's words, I said sorry to Karina. Now we're still good friends.

 Sam Smith has always been a hard-working student. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(然而), it was difficult for him to study English at the beginning of the term, and he was trying to catch up with his {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(问班同学). He was not good at speaking at first, but he tried to take an active part in the English class and have English {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(交谈) with his friends and me. During the break, I often saw him read English books, which helped him have a{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(宽阔的) view of the world. So I'm very pleased that at the end of this term, Sam Smith {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(改善) greatly and came top of our class.

 Besides learning English. Sam also made great efforts in sports games. In the last basketball Match {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (对) the Greenland School, he scored most! Now he has become a shining star on the basketball court by {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (训练) hard. I also find that Sam is a boy full of love. He helped look after the animals in the Animal Shelter. To {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (保护) more animals in danger, he wrote to the local {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (政府) and called on people to stop buying products made from animals.

Sam should be really proud of himself. I'm sure he will go to his dream {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (大学) one day if he keeps working hard. Best wishes to him!
