Recently, I've found many old photos of Mom, Dad, David, me and my first dog Coco. They meant a lot to me. I wondered how to keep them forever. Luckily, my son used a new app to clear up and improve some of the old photos. Looking at them brought back so many loving and happy memories. I even used one as my computer screen saver(屏保).

It is a picture of me sitting in my favorite chair,across from the wood stove(炉子) next to a bookcase full of old books. I am wearing my special Snoopy shirt and hugging Coco. There is a big smile on my face and a joyful shining light in my eyes. It was how I spent a lot of my winter afternoons as a girl, hugging Coco and reading an old book.

It is surprising how 60 years later that girl still lives inside of me. I still love comfortable chairs, warm stoves, Snoopy clothes, hugging dogs and reading books on cold winter days. But when I look in the mirror now, all I see is a thin face, grey hair, and lots of wrinkles(皱纹). The only thing that hasn't completely changed is the eyes. They are hiding behind glasses now and full of wisdom(智慧) given by ages. But they still have that same joyful shining light.

Looking at the little girl smiling at me from the computer screen and that 66-year-old woman looking back at me in the mirror can be a little bit strange at times. They look so different. However, they are both me. We can't stop getting older, but we can remain both joyful and young at heart forever.

A good king needs honest ministers (大臣) to help him manage the country. However, one king believed that his most important minister was a bit too honest!

The Valuer's job was to say what the price of everything in the country should be. He did his best to set fair prices, so that buyers and sellers would be happy. 

This did not please the king! "A good Valuer should set the prices that I want-then I can buy things cheaply and sell them expensively. " he said. "What's the point of having a Valuer if he doesn't set the prices I want?"

Soon, the king invited a foolish man to be the Valuer and fired (解雇) the honest Valuer. People brought all kinds of goods-rocks and fruit, fans and potatoes, fish and elephants. The foolish man had no idea how much anything was worth, so he just said whatever price came into his head. People were angry about many of the prices he set, but what could they do? He was the king's Valuer, after all!

One day, a horse trader came, leading five hundred fine horses. He bowed to the king and the Valuer, and said, "How much are my horses worth?" The king wanted the horses, so he told the Valuer to set a very low price. The Valuer thought for a moment and said, "Your horses are worth. . . a cup of rice!" The horse trader was speechless! But he had no choice but to accept the Valuer's price. 

However, the next day, the horse trader went back, carrying the cup of rice he had been given. "Yesterday, you said that my five hundred horses were worth a cup of rice, " the horse trader said to the Valuer. "____"

The foolish Valuer was surprised by this question. He said, "Your cup of rice is worth, er. . . this big city, and everything in it!" There was silence. . and then everybody started shouting at once. 

"That is silly!" shouted the king. "This city is worth far more than a cup of rice!"

A student asked his teacher," Sir, I have a question. How many friends should a man have- one or many?"

" It is very easy," the teacher answered." Get me that red apple

from the highest(最高的) branch(树枝) of the tree." The student looked up and said," It's too high! I can't get it."

" Ask a friend to help." the teacher said.

 The student called a friend and stood on his shoulders(肩膀) for the branch.

"I still can't get it, sir," said the student sadly after the first try.

" Don't you have more friends?" the teacher smiled.

 The student asked more friends to come over. They stood on each other's shoulders, trying to make a pyramid(金字塔) to get higher. But the student still couldn't get the apple. Then one of the friends went home, brought a ladder(梯子) and the student finally picked the apple.

After getting the apple, the teacher asked," So, do you know how many friends a man needs?"

"I do," the student said." Many, so together we can work out any problem."

" Sounds good," the teacher said." You need as many friends as you can. Among (在…之中) them, there will be at least(至少) one clever man who can think of a good idea, like getting a ladder!"

It was Sunday. Tom went to the City Stadium for a basketball match. Tom was worried because there was a traffic jam and he might be late for the match. He got off the bus and ran as fast as he could. He {#blank#}1{#/blank#} the team shirt and his number was eleven. 

Tom was not a player in the match, but a fan. He retired (退役) last year and went back home. This time he had a {#blank#}2{#/blank#} to watch a match of his former (以前的) teammates in his home town. He was {#blank#}3{#/blank#} to meet them again. After running for over twenty minutes, he arrived at the stadium on time. His former teammates played {#blank#}4{#/blank#} a stronger team, but they did better. Finally they won the match. Tom {#blank#}5{#/blank#} for them loudly. After the match, Tom waited at the gate of the stadium so that he could meet his old friends as soon as they came out. It was an exciting day. 

For his eleventh birthday, Tom was given a gift that would shape his life. On that day his father took him to the Children's Activity Centre and said he could choose any course（课程） that interested him. There was just one requirement (要求): Tom would have to promise（承诺） to study it for at least one year. 

Tom had many hobbies, but none kept his interest for more than a week or two. His mum once gave him a bag of stamps to encourage stamp collecting. That hobby lasted a week. Then his father got him some paints hoping that Tom's artistic side would shine through. Those paints were now under his bed, still unopened. This time Tom's parents would let him decide. 

Tom's eyes moved down the noticeboard that listed (列出) all the courses on offer. He stopped at "Photography". He liked the idea of taking beautiful pictures but the notice said that each student needed their own camera. Although Tom's family weren't poor, they weren't rich either, and a camera cost a lot of money. He continued looking. 

The next course to catch his eye was "Language Art". He didn't even know what that meant. His father explained that it taught people how to make public speeches（演讲）. Tom, a shy boy, could think of nothing worse. Then he saw "cooking", which sounded like something he'd like to do. It was inexpensive and convenient(方便的). It could be done alone and it was also creative. 

Based on（基于） Tom's hobby history, his dad had doubts (怀疑), but he agreed. Much to his parents' surprise, he practiced at home and made delicious meals for his family. Everyone looked forward to birthdays, when they could eat his cakes. Tom got great satisfaction from the pleasure his food brought to others. 

The months turned to years but his hobby never changed again. Now Tom is an adult and runs a successful restaurant. When customers（顾客） say they enjoy his meal, he still gets the same pleasure he did as a child, and remembers the special gift he received all those years ago.
