It wasSaturday again. Grace and Karen disliked Saturdays. That was another thing thetwins had in common. They shared the same clothes and tied their hair in thesame manner. In fact, it was hard for their classmates and teachers to tellthem apart sometimes.
Unliketheir classmates, they had to get up early at seven every Saturday to preparefor their lessons. Grace had to attend the art lesson and Karen had to attendher ballet (芭蕾) lesson. "How I wishI could do something different today," said the twins with one voice. Allat once, an idea came to Grace and Karen at the same time. "How would youlike to be me for a day?" they asked each other. It seemed like awonderful plan to them. After giving each other a description of their ownfriends. Grace put on Karen's ballet dress while Karen put Grace's.
When theart lesson started, Karen was lost. Unlike Grace, Karen was poor at drawing.When the art lesson finally ended, Karen didn't dare to hand in her work.
Meanwhile, Grace was struggling (挣扎) in the ballet class as well. As she had no idea about the dancesteps, she had to follow her classmates blindly. As a result, she kept knockinginto them. Their ballet teacher became impatient with her, "Karen, youshould remember the basic steps."
WhenKaren and Grace got home, they were tired out. They decided that they wouldnever try to be someone else they were not. It seemed that the grass was notalways greener on the other side.

Our words carry huge weight. They may influence people for years, and even for a lifetime. They provide them with courage to go on or one more reason to give up. When I was fourteen, my family moved to another city. Junior high was always a difficult time for me, and the move made my ninth-grade year even harder. I remember walking into the dining hall for the first time. The other kids had good friends with them, but I didn't know anyone. I felt lonely and went to the nearest seat after getting some food. The kids beside me looked at me up and down and then laughed. I could feel my face turning red at that moment. Then one of the Kids broke the ice. “Man! You have one BIG nose!” I felt hurt and didn't know what to say. I wanted to cry. But I managed a little smile—as if it didn't hurt me at all. But it did. From then on, I would often look at myself in the mirror. I studied the big nose closely. It seemed that I was just living for my nose. Thankfully, I grew out of this influence finally. But it really took me twenty years There is another thing that is kept deep in my mind. I remember going through a terrible business failure. I lost everything. I called my dad for help and he told me a lot about how to deal with the failure. What he said gave me a lot of courage and confidence(信心)to go on with my business. |

A. Relax and enjoy yourself! B. Spend the time! C. Learn a foreign language well! D. Focus on words and phrases! E. Listen and read every day! F. Be active in your own learning! |
Learning a language can be useful in today's global society. Do you find it difficult to learn a foreign language successfully? Here are some tips to help you out:
{#blank#}1{#/blank#}
By far the most important is how much time you are immersed in the language. The more time you spend with the language, the faster you will learn. This means listening, reading, writing, speaking and studying the language. This does not mean sitting in class looking out of the window, nor listening to other students who do not speak well.

Build up your vocabulary! You'll need lots. Start to notice words and how they come together as phrases. Learn these words and phrases through your listening and reading. Read online, using online dictionaries, and make your own vocabulary lists for review. Soon you will be able to use them.

Listen wherever you are on your MP3 player. Read what you are listening to. Listen to and read things that you like, things that you can mostly understand, or even partly understand. If you keep listening and reading, you will get used to the language. One hour of listening or reading is more effective than many hours of class time.

If you do want to learn the language, try to be an active learner. Choose something that you want to listen to and read. Find out the words and phrases that you need to understand in your listening and reading. Do not wait for someone else to show you the language. Discover the language by yourself, like a child growing up. Talk when you feel like it. Write when you feel like it.

Do not worry about what you cannot remember, or cannot yet understand, or cannot yet say. It does not matter. You are learning and improving. The language will gradually become clearer in your brain, but this will happen on a schedule that you cannot control. So sit back and enjoy. Just make sure you spend enough time with the language.
