牛津译林版初中英语九年级下册Unit 1 Asia同步练习3

根据短文内容,回答下列问题,每题答案不超过个词。

When I was not adding little things to my new home, I was busy learning about the animals and plants on the island, and about myself.

I discovered that the birds that lived in holes and rocks were good to eat.

One day I found an old bag that I wanted to use to store things in. Some old corn fell out of this bag and made roots in the dirt. Soon green barley grew from the seeds. When I saw these plants, I cried. They reminded me of England. When I was young I wanted to leave England for a life of adventure at sea, but now that I was trapped alone, I only wanted to return.

One day, when I was sitting by my little cave, I heard a terrible noise. The next moment much dirt came falling down the hill. There was so much of it that I was afraid it would swallow(吞没) me! I ran away and climbed over my fence using a ladder I had made. I realized that the island was being shaken by a terrible earthquake.

The earthquake soon ended, but then a terrible storm began. The sea became black and violent(猛烈的) and full of huge waves that crashed onto the beach. Thunder roared and lightning hit the water. The storm lasted for three hours, but when it finished, it began to rain. This was not the gentle, calm rain of England, but a rain so hard and terrible that I had to cut a hole in my fence to let the water pour out. Otherwise, my house would have been drowned(淹没) !

(1)、Where did Robinson live according to the passage?
(2)、Did Robinson want to continue travelling at sea or return to England when he was trapped?
(3)、How long did the storm last?
(4)、How was the rain after the storm?
(5)、What do you think of Robinson's life in the passage?

Most of us probably dreamed about becoming an astronaut when we were little. But how many of us have actually become one, or are at least working toward it? It's true that the advice" Always follow your dreams" is something that is typically easier said than done.

But still, this is the one piece of advice that Alyssa Carson wants to share with her peers. This 17-year-old girl from the US has become one of the candidates (候选人) for NASA's 2033 project to go to Mars. If everything goes well, Carson will be one of the first human beings to ever set foot on the red planet.

Carson began to dream of going to Mars when she was only three years old. After watching an astronaut-themed cartoon and hearing from her father that humans had only been to the moon but not Mars, Carson decided that she wanted to be the first one to do so.

To realize her dream, she has worked hard toward it. At the age of 12, Carson became the first person to attend all three NASA space camps, and she sat with real astronauts to discuss the future of Mars missions. Now 17, Carson is continuing with her space training while still taking on her high school work like a "normal " teenager, except that she studies all her subjects in four languages - English, French, Spanish and Chinese.

"I don't think there's anything specific that makes it easier for me or makes it something that others can't do," Carson said in an interview," I've just really focused myself on what I want to accomplish."

Besides, Carson is willing to make sacrifices (牺性) for her dream, She's fully aware of the danger of the mission and the possibility that she might never be able to come back. She also accepts the fact that she can't get married and start a family because any loved ones left on Earth may be a distraction for her and for the mission, But Carson believes that it's all worth it, summarizing her view with this ancient Greek proverb she once quoted," A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they'll never sit in."

While some people's dreams may sound out of this world, Carson is on her way.

Once there was a village. The people there only cared about themselves. One day, a traveler arrived. Hungry and tired, he wished to find something to eat. Then he stopped at a house and knocked at the door. A woman opened the door. The traveler asked, "May I have something to eat?" The woman shook her head and closed the door without thinking.

Then the traveler picked up a stone and knocked at the door again.

"Perhaps you would be interested in my special stone soup!" the traveler said with a smile. The woman was surprised by this unusual suggestion. "Stone soup?" she doubted, wondering what that would be.

"Yes. I just need to borrow a pot of hot water, please, " the traveler added. Though she didn't want to, the woman still gave him some water. Then the traveler put his stone in it. "It already tastes good, " he said. "But if you had a little salt and butter, the soup would taste a lot better!"

The woman brought him what he asked for, but she was not patient. Soon the word spread through the village and many people came, wanting to see what this stranger would do. "It's almost finished, " the traveler said. "But it would be even nicer if there were some carrots and potatoes. "

"I have potatoes, " said an old lady.

"I have some carrots, " a young man answered.

A few minutes later, these were added in. Soon, the air was filled with the nice smell. "Is it ready?" the first woman asked. "Yes, but if we can add some meat to the stone soup, it will taste more delicious, " he replied. "I have beef, " shouted a man who was watching from a window.

Having everything he wanted in the pot, the traveler tasted a spoon of the soup. "Perfect!" he laughed. Then, he gave everyone a bowl of his special stone soup. "It's delicious!" said the villagers happily. At that moment, all of them finally realized the importance of sharing and supporting each other.
