I was ten years old when my mother died. Ten years old on that very day, my mother organized a party for me at the hospital. She made sure everyone there brought me presents. 

Nurse Ms. Louise gave me a fountain pen. "Now you can write beautiful stories, Katie," She said. Then the twins in the same room gave me a pink diary. A little too cute for me. I mean, I read Stephen King, the novelist and wanted to write like him. There was one box they held out till the end. It was a large box, carefully wrapped (包裹) with exquisite paper and ribbons. "Who's it from?" I asked. 

"It's you," Mama mouthed, hard breathing, but she smiled a very small smile at me. I read her lips. She meant it was a present for me. 

"Of course, it is," I said happily. 

I took off the paper carefully. It was a beautiful box made of heavy cardboard. Then I opened it slowly and...

"It's empty," I said. "Is this a joke?" I turned to ask Mama, but she was gone, no breath. 

"Mama!" I cried. I screamed. 

I cried steadily for a week at night, and for about a year, I stopped writing and reading. I felt empty and angry. 

One night, I woke up remembering how she had said, "It's you." Not, "It's for you," just "It's you." Mama had been a writer herself. She didn't use words carelessly. But, why? 

I took the box out and opened it. It was as empty as the day I had put it away. 

 "It's you," I whispered to the box. Suddenly I knew. 

I was the box, solid and strong, maybe even beautiful on the outside. But I had to fill up the box to make it all it could be. I had to fill me up as well. 

Then ____. The first thing I put on paper was about that birthday. I kept it in the box, and pretty soon that box was overflowing with stories. And poems. And memories. 

And so was I.

With the development of society, people's needs are becoming increasingly different and we have more expectations for the future. What do you expect to see in 2024? Let's have a look. 

It's my second week at junior high. Today is Friday—the best day of the week！

My {#blank#}1{#/blank#} class on Fridays is history and I love it. We are {#blank#}2{#/blank#} the old history of China. I think it's very {#blank#}3{#/blank#} , so I often read the textbook carefully. Now I can remember many facts in the textbook {#blank#}4{#/blank#}. The second class is maths. We have five maths lessons every week. Maths is easy in primary school, {#blank#}5{#/blank#} I think it's a little difficult at junior high. I should spend more time on {#blank#}6{#/blank#}. After maths, we have English. 

We have a reading project. The class is very quiet, because all the students are doing{#blank#}7{#/blank#} projects carefully. We also have a PE class. I'm {#blank#}8{#/blank#} the football team of our class. We play football in the playground. 

Many of {#blank#}9{#/blank#} think Friday afternoons are great. Do you know why? That's because we can{#blank#}10{#/blank#} our favourite classes. I enjoy my school life very much and I hope I can do better in my study. 

Can you imagine(想象) your life with no smartphones or TV? With no cars or supermarkets? Can you imagine life in a tree house?

 In her book, A life in the Trees, Rebecca Moore travels 15,000 kilometers from London to Papua New Guinea. In Papua New Guinea, Rebecca meets the Kombai people. She talks about their lives in the jungle(丛林).

 Moore lived with the Kombai women and children for three months. Kombai life is very different. The Kombai people have no watches and no cars. There is no school for the children. Parents teach their children to cook, hunt(狩猎) and swim.

 The Kombai get up every morning at sunrises. Kombai men hunt in the jungle. They can hunt for 12 hours. They also cut down sago palms(西米棕榈). This tree is important. The women cook the inside of the tree. The Kombai people eat this food for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

 The most important part of Kombai life is building their tree houses. The men, women and children all help build tree houses. Each house is 20 meters high. The stories in this book which has been written in Japanese and Chinese show the Kombai people's lives in the trees.

It's 4：00 on the afternoon of 10^th April. My family are all in the living room. I'm sitting next to the window and writing these words. Tony, my husband, is watching his favourite TV show. My sons, Ted and Ned are twins and they are working on their own things. Ted is leaving a message to his best friend and asking him to call back. Ned is playing games on the Internet. Today is their birthday. They're thirteen years old now. We'll have a party for them this evening. Our cat, Mimi, is looking at our dog Buddy. She is very angry with him because he's eating her food. Buddy often does that! I wish them to be good friends, but Mimi doesn't like Buddy at all. We're having a quiet afternoon and we are going to have an exciting evening!
