Mother's Day was coming. Sally wanted to buy her mother some{#blank#}1{#/blank#} （礼物）. Sally decided to choose one that was cheap and useful because she was still a student. 

A week before Mother's Day，Sally had a quick lunch and went to a big mall far from her home. After a long{#blank#}2{#/blank#}（一段时间） of time，she got nothing as there were few she could afford. All of a{#blank#}3{#/blank#}（突然），she found an umbrella store. Mom lost one a month ago，she thought to herself. She was attracted by the colorful umbrellas in different{#blank#}4{#/blank#}（款式） but still too expensive. After hearing her reasons，the seller{#blank#}5{#/blank#}（建议） her to buy a black umbrella and gave her a discount. "Mom might like{#blank#}6{#/blank#} （它的） special color，" Sally said and took it. 

On her way home in the tram，she felt hungry so that she went to the buffet car （餐车） for some cookies. But she discovered that her black umbrella disappeared{#blank#}7{#/blank#}（有人） must have taken it by mistake. " said three other passengers. "How about leaving your mom's{#blank#}8{#/blank#}（地址）？It will be{#blank#}9{#/blank#} （方便的） for the person to send it back when he found he took your umbrella by mistake. "

A few days later，Sally received a{#blank#}10{#/blank#} （明信片） from her mother，which said，but why did you buy me three similar black ones？"

"Amma, your son has sent money to you," said the postman to the old lady. She was sitting outside her house. Seeing him, Amma's face lighted up. "Let me first talk to my son," she was looking at him with hopeful eyes. But the postman tried to avoid it, "Amma, I don't have so much time. Don't talk with your son every time."

The postman wanted to go but Amma stopped him. She said, "It will take just a while." Hearing this, the postman dialed (拨号) a number on his mobile phone.After talking to her son on the phone, Amma was happy.

Then, the postman handed eight 100-rupee (卢比，货币单位) notes to Amma. After counting the money, she took out one note and gave it to the postman.

"Why, Amma?" asked the postman. Amma smiled and said, "You bring me money and also let me talk to my son. It must cost money, right? So keep it." Amma went inside after giving him lots of blessings (祝福).

The postman left and met his friend Ramu. "Every month you give your own money to Amma. Not only that, you give me money to talk to her on the phone as her son! Why?" Ramu asked.

The postman said, "Her son worked in a foreign country and used to send money to his mother every month. But one day, her son was missing. Now, he's still out of touch. I don't want to tell this to Amma. So I send her some money and ask you to talk with her on the phone."

Here is a story: A man sees a butterfly (蝴蝶). The butterfly tries to get out of its chrysalis (蛹). Feeling sorry for it, the man decides to help. He cuts the chrysalis and the butterfly comes out easily. Surprisingly enough, the butterfly is unable to fly. If the butterfly doesn't struggle (挣扎，奋斗) to leave the chrysalis, it can't fly! The struggle develops the energy in the butterfly which makes it fly. Similarly, the challenges (挑战) of life bring out the best in young people and make them fly.

When people are young, meeting and overcoming (克服) challenges will make them strong and ready to face life. When we look at successful people, we see that the most successful of them are people who have had to struggle. One famous businessman, who now owns many supermarkets, used to carry clothes on his back and sell them from door to door when he was young. Another successful man is Dennis. His father died when he was only twenty. His father's death forced him to mature fast. He had to bring up a family of nine people. He took up the challenges and overcame them. Today his brothers and sisters are leading successful lives.

Sometimes challenges do not appear to us because we keep away from them. So some parents and teachers actively encourage young people to face challenges. They might organize some activities for young people which provide them with challenges, like rock-climbing, camping, volunteer work and so on. However, just passing exams will not prepare a person for life. We must meet and overcome challenges. The young people of today will become the leaders of tomorrow. For countries to continue to become successful, it is important that the young people learn to meet challenges and overcome them.

Martin had a lot of friends at school. He 1 told his family how many friends he had. 

One day, his father called him for a bet (打赌). "Martin, I bet you for the bike you wanted."

"Really?! What's the bet? " Martin couldn't believe his 2 .

"You do not have as many friends as you think. Not everyone is 3 friend."

Shailyn Ryan is a 9- year- old girl from Massachusetts. That day, during lunch in the school dining hall, she noticed 1 unexpected happening. Her friend Keira held a hand to her own throw without a word. Her face rapidly turned red, then blue. Though Keira was unable to 2 , Shailyn knew she was choking(噎住).

A few days later, Shailyn was given an award by the school master Jill Barnhardt.  " We' re sure to 11 Shailyn for her actions in such situation," Barnhardt said." Shailyn took actions 12 . Her response to her friend's suffering was effective. She is simply a 13 ."

 Shailyn was also excited to get a personal tour of a hospital 14 she dreamed of becoming a doctor.‘I want to 15 more people,'' she said." That would be cool to work in a hospital."
