Welcome to the Painting Competition for Woodlands Students

The International Anti-Drug(禁毒) Day this year is coming soon. In order to raise teenagers' awareness(意识) to fight against drug taking, the City Art Council is going to hold a painting competition for the students in our city.

    Students who want to take part in the competition can hand in their own 2D paintings in either of the following two ways:

★Each school will be provided with a box for students to put in their paintings. Boxes will be picked up by the City Art Council on Thursday, June 23rd, 2016, before the end of the school day.

    ★Paintings can be also handed in on Friday, June 24th, from 8：00 am to 10：00 am at the Woodlands Art Hall (175 Riverside Street)．

    All paintings are required to be 60cm wide by 80cm long or smaller. Larger sizes will not be accepted. Each student can only hand in one painting.

The final decision on the competition results will be made on June 26th, the AntiDrug Day. The name list of the winners will be made known on the website of the City Art Council on the same day. All winning paintings will be shown to the public at the City Youth Park from June 27th till the end of July.

    Prizes: 1st Prize(10 students)＝$300 Gift Card each

    2nd Prize(20 students)＝$200 Gift Card each

    3rd Prize(30 students)＝$100 Gift Card each

Anna wants to become a top guitarist (吉他演奏家) in the future (将来). She began to play the guitar two years ago when she saw her father play it at home. "I love the guitar, so I always play it at home. When I found she was also interested in it, I began to teach her," said her father. Soon Anna was good at playing it. Then she began to take guitar lessons in Band School every Saturday to learn more from musicians there.

Anna studied hard at Band School, and soon she could take part in (参加) the school's concert. Anna was the youngest player. Most students felt nervous when they took part in the concert for the first time, but Anna didn't. She was very relaxed, and she gave a really fantastic performance (表演).

Many people see her performance online, and Anna is becoming famous in her town now. "Boys usually like playing the guitar, but very few girls choose it. I hope more girls can play it in the future," said Anna. Anna's father bought her a new guitar last month and she plans to start a band herself later this year.

Every year around August, millions of teens take their parents to stores to buy new clothes for the start of the school year. Not every parent can a{#blank#}1{#/blank#} this, and some teens are forced to go to school in the same clothes they had last year. The obvious differences in clothes c{#blank#}2{#/blank#} differences among students. Here comes the {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (simple) solution: school uniforms. 

I know from personal experience and surveys that wearing uniforms creates a s{#blank#}4{#/blank#} of equality among teens. 

From the sixth grade until I graduated from high school, I attended a school that r{#blank#}5{#/blank#} students to wear uniforms. The uniform was very plain: dark brown shoes, green-brown pants, and a white shirt. The uniform left little r{#blank#}6{#/blank#}for any kind of self-expression, especially through clothes. 

However, I learned how to stand out by expressing myself, {#blank#}7{#/blank#} my personality, art, and sports. I did not know I could draw until the sixth grade. I also would never have learned of my musical a{#blank#}8{#/blank#} if it were not for my desire to find ways to express myself. Uniforms taught me that I was myself, except what I {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(wear) . 

Uniforms help provide a better e{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(education) experience for all students no matter what race, culture, or economic class. Wearing uniforms is good for both schools and students. 

Ye Jiaying, also known as Florence Yeh, was selected as one of the ten role models who won 2020 Touching China awards, a program by the CCTV.

Ye Jiaying was born into a family of scholars in July 1924 in Beijing. As an expert in the study of classical Chinese literature (文学), she started her lifelong career as a literature teacher in 1945 when she graduated from Fu Jen Catholic Unisersity, which later became part of Beijing Nonnal University.

In 1948, towards the end of the Chinese civil war, Ye and her husband moved to Taiwan. She gained popularity in Taiwan. With students speaking highly of her teaching, she was recruited by Taiwan University, Fu Jen University and Tamkang University to leach Chinese literature.

 In 1966, the couple moved to the United States, where Ye first taught Chinese poetry at Michigan State University and then at Harvard University. Later, they moved to Canada and she worked as a tenured professor at the University of Columbia in Canada.

Beginning in 1979, Ye began spending summers teaching at various Chinese colleges, including famous universities such as Beijing University, Nankai University and Fudan University. She offered her services for free and paid her own travel expenses (开销). She believes that her teaching is the best gift she can offer to the country and later generations.

In 2013, she came back to China and worked in Nankai University. She has settled down in Tianjin since then. The university announced (宣布) that Ye had donated 18.57 million yuan ($2.8 million) to the college to set up the Jiaying Scholarship.

According to the speech which explained why she won the 2020 Touching China awards, Ye Jiaying devoted herself to teaching Chinese poems. She only did one thing in her life, bringing the beauty of ancient Chinese poetry to the world.

When you look at me now, you won't believe that I once weighed over 300 pounds. Yes, I used to be a really 1 girl. I never worried about it until I had a medical examination one day. 

The doctor told me that I was having heart trouble. He said it would be 2 if I could lose some weight. Then I decided to make a 3 .

After a year and five months, I lost 104 pounds. I didn't have any expensive food, medical treatment or camp- style exercise. So what was the secret to my 4 ?

First, I looked through the Internet for some 5 on losing weight. Of course, I saw many advertisements(广告), but I bought nothing. The only thing I did was change my bad6 . I stopped having drinks with too much sugar and 7 my love for sweet cakes. Now I have got used to eating a lot of green vegetables and using vegetable oil only. I 8 eat after 6:30 p. m. because it's unhealthy to have a late dinner. Also, I 9 for 15 to 20 minutes five days a week to keep fit. 

People sometimes say, " You don't need to tell me what to do. I've known it already!" The fact is that knowing what to do and doing what you know are completely 10 . The important thing is to know what to do and then keep doing it.
