新目标(Go for it)版初中英语九年级Unit 10 You're supposed to shake hands. 第1课时Section A练习

阅读理解

Two years ago, I got a job in a Chinese—Canadian company in Vancouver. One day my new boss said he would invite me to lunch to celebrate my new job in a Chinese restaurant. "A Chinese restaurant? Chopsticks? Oh no! Will I make a complete fool of myself?" I thought.

That evening, I cooked noodles and spent two whole hours trying to learn how to use chopsticks. Try as I might, I didn't succeed. I called my penfriend and asked her to explain exactly how to use chopsticks. She patiently explained the proper way of holding them. "Louise, it's not that hard," she said. "That's easy for you to say," I replied. "You've been eating with chopsticks all your life. It's natural for you!"

I didn't sleep well that night. The next day, when my boss took two co-workers and me to the restaurant, he spoke to the server in Chinese. My heart was beating fast, but then I noticed something strange. Instead of chopsticks, we all had knives, forks and spoons. I didn't understand at first, but then, it hit me. My boss knew that I would have trouble with chopsticks. To save me from embarrassment (尴尬) , he had arranged for us to be served with knives, forks and spoons. I couldn't believe how thoughtful he was.

Now, we often go out for lunch. After a lot of practice, I've mastered how to use chopsticks. And it isn't really that difficult once you get used to them.

Martin Strel is a swimmer, best known for swimming the world's big rivers. He was born in 1954. He taught himself to swim when he was six and became a professional (职业的) swimmer in 1978. Martin holds Guinness World Records for swimming the Danube River, the Mississippi River, the Yangtze River and the Amazon River.

Of all his achievements, the greatest is his Amazon River swim. The Amazon is known as the largest and most dangerous river in the world. Several swimmers had tried to swim it, but all failed. Martin decided to go all out and make history. He wanted to show the world that people could achieve their dreams with hard work and perseverance (毅力). On April 7th, 2007, Martin Strel completed his Amazon River all the way from Atalaya (Peru) to the Atlantic Ocean at Belem (Brazil). He struggled (奋战) with the river for 66 days and swam 3, 274 miles in total. He became a worldwide hero.

Many people still cannot believe what he has done so far, so that is why they sometimes describe him as "Fishman", "Human Fish" or even "the Craziest Man in the World".

In 2009, American filmmakers produced a documentary (纪录片) called Big River Man. And the book, The Man Who Swam the Amazon, has been sold in many countries. It tells us an inspirational story of perseverance and hard work, which has encouraged many people.

Martin doesn't swim for money. Instead, he swims to teach people about the importance of keeping water clean.

Martin has always been looking for the challenges (挑战) of the impossible. What is his next?

"Milano Cortina 2026 might be my last Winter Olympics. Whatever the result will be, I have only one goal, which is to go beyond my earlier results, "33-year-old Olympic champion Xu Mengtao said at her book launch party(新书发布会).

Xu was born in 1990 in Liaoning Province. Her parents ran a BBQ restaurant, where Xu would help out during holidays. Xu started her sports career at the age of 4 as a gymnast, before changing to freestyle skiing aerials(自由式滑雪空中技巧) at the age of 12, when she was considered too tall to continue gymnastics.

Xu has won 55 freestyle skiing aerials championships so far, but they have come at a cost.

Xu has had four operations on her knees. When she took part in the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics, there were steel pins(钢钉) in her knees. Just as at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, she wanted to get an Olympic gold medal. Unluckily, she failed to achieve her goal, although she tried her best.

But failures, painful injuries and lonely months of recovery didn't stop her. Xu finally realized her dream at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, by completing three somersaults(空翻) on her final jump.

In her book, Xu records her true feelings about her life over the past 30 years, her memories of heart-stopping international competitions, the number of medals she won, the low points she managed to overcome and her full preparation for each competition. "Plan each jump, review each problem and look for every possibility. The real situation is unpredictable, so I have to be fully prepared, " Xu wrote in the book.

"I hope my personal experience can encourage more people to go after their dreams, " Xu added. "Don't stop trying. It's hard to say when your efforts will pay off, but they will do surely at the most important moment. "

One sunny afternoon, a wise man entered the village. He had 3 the villagers and their habit of complaining, and he decided to pay them a visit. As he got closer to the group, he listened quietly to their problems and then did something 4 .

He said, "I have a joke for you all." The villagers, surprised by this sudden stop, fell silent and looked at the wise man.

He told them a joke, and happily, they all laughed out loud. Their 5 was heard all over the square, a sound that didn't happen in their daily conversations.

The wise man was encouraged and 6 to tell the joke again. This time, only 7 people smiled.

8 , the wise man told the joke for the third time. 9 they had laughed at the joke before, this time all the villagers looked at him with confused expressions.

The man smiled and said, "You're not going to laugh at the 10 joke more than once. So, why do you 11 to complain about the same problems over and over again?"

The villagers were surprised by the wise man's 12 . They had never considered that always complaining was doing them more 13 than good. They realized that they could change 14 they look at things and choose happiness over sadness. From then on, the villagers tried hard to think positively. They still talked about their problems, but they also started to 15 their joys and successes. The town square became a place of laughter and hope.
