When I first went to Britain，a lot of things seemed strange to me. For example，people drove on the left side of the road and many people carried an umbrella all the time. There were also many other things that I found really surprising. 

The first thing I noticed was how polite British people were. When I got on the bus，the driver would greet me；when people got off the bus，they would say "Thank you" to the driver；when I went into a shop，I would be greeted by a smiling salesman. 

The family I stayed with were very nice，but their house was full of peculiar（奇怪的）things. Firstly，there were carpets everywhere，even in the bathroom. Also，the bathroom was full of surprises. The first time I tried to wash my hands I burned myself. The cold and hot water came out of different taps. Then，when I tried to dry my hair，I couldn't find a socket（插座） for my hairdryer. Maybe that wasn't such a big surprise. More surprising was the fact that British people didn't take their shoes off when they went into a house—can you imagine？

I guess that for British people all of these things are normal. It's only when you visit a foreign country that you realize that what you think is normal is not. Normality depends on where you are. 

Welcome to Classic Reading. I'm your host, Jordon. While living in China for the past seven years, I'vebecome interested in Chinese culture, especially classical Chinese poetry. I have also known some Chinesepoets, such as Li Bai, Du Fu and so on. Today, I will talk about a poem from the Tang Dynasty by the poet HeZhizhang. Here is an English version（版本）of the poem by Xu Yuanchong, a world-famous translator ofancient Chinese poems in both English and French. Let's take a look at his translation. 

Oh, I return to the homeland I left while young, 

Thinner has grown my hair, though I speak the same tongue. 

My children, whom I meet, do not know who am I. 

"Where are you from, dear sir?" they ask with beaming eyes. 

In this short poem, He Zhizhang tells a story about a visit to his birthplace. It's been decades（数十年）since the last time he was home, but he could still pick up his local accent. Things did not change much, butthe people did. The poet had mixed feelings about it, so he wrote this poem. 

Personally, I like this poem because it reminds me of my own hometown. No matter where I live or forhow long I've been away, my hometown and family will always have a special place in my heart. I hope youcan enjoy this poem as much as I do. See you next time! 

This story is about a young man. He worked hard at his lessons. He was too busy. He didn't have time to rest, so he was ill. Every night, when he went to bed, he closed his eyes and tried to sleep. But he couldn't. He thought, "I must go to see the doctor." He said to the doctor, "I can't go to sleep at night." "Try counting numbers. When you reach one thousand, you'll be asleep."

The next day the man came back to the doctor's office. "Well," said the doctor, "how are you today?" 

"Yes," he said. "I tried counting one, two, three … up to （直到)one thousand. But when I reached five hundred and sixty-nine, I began to feel sleepy. I had to get up and drank some tea. Then I went on counting up to one thousand. But I still couldn't fall asleep." 

In ancient (古代的) China, people have three names: their family names. given names, and courtesy names(字).

Take the famous poet Li Bai as an example. His family name is Li, his given name is Bai, and his courtesy name is Taibai.

People use their given names when they are with their family or friends. And your elders like your grandparents and parents call your given name at home. But in the workplace, people use their courtesy names.

Men usually get their courtesy names when they are 20 years old. Women usually get their courtesy names after they get married(结婚) .

People's courtesy names have something to do with their given names. For example, Zhuge Liang's given name is Liang. It means "bright". His courtesy name is Kongming. And the meaning is "very bright".

Once upon a time, there was a huge crab(螃) living in the mountains

One day, the crab decided to return to the ocean. While he was moving to the sea, the whole earth shook.

An old man felt the land shake. He shouted loudly to his villagers,"We must build a raft(木筏)! Quickly! Quickly!

"Why should we do that?" asked one of them

"Because he is so massive that when he dives into the ocean, it will cause a flood!" The old man replied, "We must build a raft big enough to hold all of us and many animals!"

The villagers accepted his warming and began working together. Some of them cut down trees, while others were busy building the raft. After seeing what villagers did, the animals of the forest sensed that danger was coming so they joined in the work as well. The monkeys and the water buffalo wove(编) ropes, while the horses and the tiny mouse deer helped to pull trees from the forest. Finally, the old man tied one end of the rope to the raft and the other end to a big tree.

"What is that for?"asked a child.

The old man smiled, "This will help us find our way home."

Finally, the raft was ready. Not long after, this big crab completed his journey and jumped into the sea! Suddenly, the huge waves flooded the land. The villagers and animals climbed onto the life raft, which was swept away by the rushing water. People and animals were all in fear!

But the raft suddenly came to a stop because of the rope which was tied to the tree. People and animals hugged together for warmth. They sang to keep their spirits when they floated(漂浮) on the raft

The crab finally settled on the sea bottom. Soon after, the sea level returned to its original position, and the passengers found themselves back on land. Both humans and animals were happy to be alive! They turned to the old man, "Thanks for saving us by getting us to build a raft!"

But he smiled, "Oh, it was not me that saved you. We worked together-the men and women and children, and the animals too. When we work together, there's nothing we can't do."
