Have you ever wondered why you sometimes take an almost immediately liking to a person you have just met? We often get the first impression of a person based on the color of a person's skin or the manner in which he or she is dressed. Meaning is conveyed not only by words or verbal(用语言的)languages but also by nonverbal communication systems, such as body behaviors.
Nonverbal communication is important because we use the action of others to learn about their affective emotional states. Our emotions are reflected in our posture, face, and eyes—fear, joy, anger or sadness—so we can express them without even saying a word. For this reason, most of us rely heavily on what we learn through our eyes.
Nonverbal communication is significant in human interaction because it is usually responsible for the first impressions. More importantly, those first messages usually influence the perception(观点,看法)of everything else that follows. Even how we select friends and lovers is grounded in first impressions with nonverbal communication.
Nonverbal communication is important because it is culture-related. It is based on different beliefs, religions, values and customs in different cultures. When, where, how, and to whom people display his or her specific nonverbal behaviors is greatly affected by culture and context. Culture determines what the appropriate nonverbal behavior is. For example, feelings of friendship exist everywhere but their expression varies. It may be appropriate in some countries for man to hug each other and for women to hold hands; in other countries these displays of affection may be shocking. Each culture has its own specific interpretation on nonverbal communication. What is acceptable in one culture may be completely unacceptable in another. One culture may determine that snapping fingers to call a waiter is acceptable; another may consider this gesture rude.

Many people believe that classical music is not relevant music is not relevant to young people today . However, this issue (问题) frequently causes heated debate.
Some people say that classical music is associated only with old people .For example, if you look at the audience at a classical concert , the majority is over the age of fifty.
Others say it is more popular than we first imagine . Many young people listen to classical music without realising .It is often used in films and advertisements. For example.a famous piece of classical music was used as the theme music for the 1990 World Cup . Not many people could have given its name , but millions enjoyed it .
Also, some people point out that young people produce new music based on classical ideas: for example, it is said that rap(说唱)music was invented by a classical musician in 1912, but it is now used by young people in pop music.
However, young people point to the fact that classical music has been outstripped(超越) by technology. To play a classical instrument, such as a violin, you need to study hard and practise for hours. Nowadays, you don't need to get aching arms from practising. A teenager can write and make music using a computer program in the comfort of their own bedroom.
A final point to in mind is that the term "classical music" is used to refer to a great variety of music, from jazz to pieces for large orchestras(管弦乐队).This makes it even more difficult to say whether classical music is relevant to young people.
So, it may be only a minority of young people who play classical instruments , but when it comes to enjoying classical music, it depends on the piece of music. It may be more relevant to young people in the modern world than they realise!

If you want to make a great first impression—and why wouldn't you—you know there are basic steps you can take: you should smile, make eye contact, talk less than the other person, and ask questions about him or her. Anyone can do those things.
But what you might not know is that if you think other people are going to like you, they usually will. As research shows, interpersonal warmth explains the scene: study participants who expected to be accepted were sensed as more likable. (when you think other people will like you, you act in a more natural way—which then makes people like you more since we tend to like warm, friendly people.)
All of which sounds great, but when you're shy or insecure, you might believe that other people will like you. When you're not familiar with the setting or do not feel comfortable, it's a lot easier to believe people don't like you.
So how can you convince yourself that people will like you? Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and commit to taking a few steps that ensure almost anyone will like you.
⒈Give a sincere compliment(称赞).
Everyone loves praise, especially since no one gets enough praise. Show interest by asking questions. But go past, "What do you do?" Ask what it's like to do what the person does. Ask what's hard about it. Ask what the person loves about it. You'll soon find things to compliment.
⒉Focus on letting people talk about themselves.
People love to talk about themselves.
Research shows approximately 40 percent of everyday speech is spent telling other people what we think or feel—basically, talking about our subjective experiences.
By helping people talk about themselves, you're seen as a great conversationalist. In fact, you say very little. Even if you haven't succeeded in making people fully understand you, it is OK. And in the process, you also make other people feel better about themselves, and that makes them like you.
That's another win-win.
⒊Change one word.
Think about the difference in these statements:
I had to go to a meeting.
I got to meet with some great people.
I have to interview some candidates for a job.
I get to select a great person to join our team.
No big deal, right? Wrong. We like to be around the people who have enthusiasm and motivation.
Keep in mind choosing the right words also affects how you feel. Don't say, "I have to go to the gym." Say, "I want to go to the gym."
⒋Show a little weakness.
Great teams are often led by people willing to admit weaknesses and failings.
Want to make a great first impression? Don't try to impress. Instead, be humble. Admit your mistakes. Laugh at yourself.
When you do, other people won't laugh at you. They'll laugh with you.
And they'll immediately like you, and want to be around you more.
Common sense | If you want to make a great first impression, you are {#blank#}1{#/blank#} to smile, make eye contact, {#blank#}2{#/blank#} more than you talk, and ask questions about the other person. |
Interpersonal warmth principle | If you think other people are going to like you, they usually will, so you act more{#blank#}3{#/blank#} and make yourself liked more since everyone tends to like warm, friendly people. |
When you're in an unfamiliar setting or feel {#blank#}4{#/blank#}, it's a lot easier to assume that people{#blank#}5{#/blank#} you. | |
{#blank#}6{#/blank#} for being likable | ●Everyone loves to be {#blank#}7{#/blank#}, especially since no one gets enough praise. Show interest by asking questions, you'll soon find things to compliment. |

●Admit weaknesses and failings, other people will laugh with you {#blank#}10{#/blank#} of laughing at you. |
Tests can be worrying even for the most prepared students. When some students take tests, their minds don't work as well as usual. They may experience something called test anxiety (焦虑), which can have a negative influence on their performance. Well, the following tips can help you pass your next test more easily and achieve more success!
Get Enough Sleep
6 hours of sleep or less can slow your mind and thus has negative effects on your performance on tests, even if you spend those missed hours of sleep studying. So, it's very important for you to get a good night of sleep before your big day.
Study Smarter
How do you study 'smarter'? Make a list of the things you need to learn in order of importance. That way, if you don't have enough time, you can still hit the items at the top of the list. Make a list of all the work you have to do, judge how much time each item will take, and compare that with the number of hours you have available; this will tell you whether you can read carefully or just skim, how much time you can spend checking papers, and tell you other ways to pace yourself so you can get everything done. If your time is still limited, it's important to learn to let go of being perfect.
Visualize (想象) Success
Before you fall asleep each night, it is a great way to visualize yourself taking the tests and doing wonderfully. Detailed visualizations can help you feel like you're really experiencing something, and visualizing yourself doing well is a way to 'practice' success in a way that can help you perform better and feel confident. Visualizations can also help you to remember the facts.
Stay Calm
Anxiety can harm your memory, so it's important to stay calm before and during tests. While that's easier said than done, there are several techniques that can help you calm down quickly whenever you feel nervous. For example, breathing exercise has been shown by research to reduce test anxiety, and can be very effective in helping you relax: just take deep breaths and let the anxiety come out.
