Last year, Bob visited Vancouver, Canada alone. He went there to give a talk on the environment. When it was over, he travelled to the Rocky Mountains and stayed in the Maple Leaf Hotel. He then took a short walk to look at the local plants in the forest. After a few hours, he knew he took the wrong way, but was sure he could get back to the hotel.

However, after walking for several hours the next day, Bob knew he was in trouble. "I had my mobile phone, but the battery(电池) was almost dead. I could probably make just one call. But I didn't know the number of my hotel and I didn't want to worry my family if I really didn't have to." said Bob. He went on walking for three more days. He knew which plants he could eat and he had little trouble finding them.

On the fourth day, he knew there was no hope and decided to call his family. "He was quite calm when he spoke to me on the phone." said Shirley, Bob's wife. "He seemed to be in control (操控) of the situation." Shirley called the Maple Leaf Hotel at once. "That week lots of visitors went to the city to watch basketball games, and we thought Mr. Rigsby went there too." said the hotel manager. As soon as Shirley phoned, the hotel sent out some people to look for Bob. They found him about one hour later, and luckily he was quite unhurt.

"I will never go to the forest without a guide. I never want an experience like that again." said Bob.

As is known to us, microbes (微生物) help us do lots of things here on the earth. They can make bread rise and treat some illnesses among many other things. Researchers have done lots of experiments (实验) with microbes in space. And their latest findings show that these microbes could be very helpful for us to learn more about space.

Last summer, the European Space Agency did an experiment at the International Space Station. In this experiment, three kinds of microbes were tested on their ability to pull REES (稀土元素) out of rocks in three different kinds of gravity (重力).

This way of using microbes to get materials from rocks is known as bio-mining (生物开采). We've been doing it for some time here on the earth, mainly to get gold and other materials. But here comes a serious question. Would it work in space? These researchers found the proper answer in their experiments.

The results were encouraging. Of the three kinds of microbes. one was able to pull 14 kinds of REES out of rocks in all three kinds of gravity. The rocks used in the experiment were made of a kind of rock that is commonly found on the earth, Mars and the moon.

While the results might be useful, how can they help us learn more about space? For one thing, space research in the future will require us to find materials on the moon and Mars. Therefore, we are able to use these things to continue our research efforts. And bio-mining can help us do this cheaply and easily. It's one of the exciting news to the scientific field.

As you start a new term, you might feel a bit worried or nervous. These feelings aren't fun to have. But would your favourite superhero have these same feelings?

Scientists have been studying what they call the "Batman Effect (效 应)" in children. They've found that if kids pretend (假装) to be a strong person — such as a superhero like Batman — they won't feel so nervous and will be able to focus(集中) on their work.

For example, if you feel nervous during an exam, try to imagine that you are Batman. You may find that you can remove the stress from this situation and feel more confident. This can help you fight off bad feelings and focus on your task, just like a superhero would. Pretending to be powerful makes us feel powerful, and that goes on to how we act in real life.

But you don't have to believe in superheroes for this to work. Anyone you admire (仰慕) can encourage you to get through hard times, or remind you of how you should act in certain situations. Movie stars, famous painters, even our own parents — anyone can be our "Batman".

As for me, I would like to choose Mr Rogers, He was a TV host who was always kind, helpful and patient when dealing with other people. I try to act the same way towards other people just like Mr Rogers.

 根据语篇内容,选择最佳选项。

①Our body language tells the world a lot about us. But can it change the way in which we see ourselves? The answer is Yes.

②Two scientists, Amy Cuddy and Danna Carney, who know much about body language, did a famous research. According to the result of their research, body language can change the chemistry of our brains. Some high-power body language can make you become confident. For example, you will feel confident when you hold your head high; you will feel confident too when you put your arms out wide as if you have won a race. However, some low-power body language can make you feel unconfident, such as sitting with your arms close to the body, sitting with your legs together or walking with your head down.

③Why do all these happen? The scientists think the reason is that body language changes the amount of something special in our brains. It's called hormone(激素). One kind of hormone can increase your confidence; another kind can increase your stress(压力). But too much stress hormone is bad for learning. It also increases the risk of health problems.

④The result of the research is helpful for your studies. Please remember: try to use more high-power body language in your studies, and you will be confident. That is, always believe you can study well, act as if you were doing well, then you will make greater progress in real life.

 根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项, 并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有一项为多余选项。

Four Ways to Improve Your Children's Reading Abilities

If you don't know how to develop your children's reading abilities, don't worry. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}.

⒈Have them read aloud

This encourages them to read slowly. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}. In this way, they're not only seeing the words but they're hearing them! You can also take turns reading aloud.

⒉{#blank#}3{#/blank#}

Make sure to provide enough books for your children to practice reading. But these books should not be too hard. There shouldn't be too many new words. They should understand at least 90 percent of the words. Otherwise (否则), they will lose their interest in reading.

⒊Talk to your children's teacher

If your children have difficulty in reading, they may need help about how to build their vocabulary (词汇) or how to get the main idea. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}. He/She knows better about your children than you in learning.

⒋Re-read to build fluency (流畅)

To get the meaning of a text, your children need to read fast and smoothly—a skill called fluency{#blank#}5{#/blank#}. Reading familiar and simple books again and again can help your children understand them quickly.

A. Provide books at the right level

B. You can have a talk with the teacher

C. They will have enough time to understand

D. These following ways will perhaps help you

E. Your children will love these interesting books

F. Re-reading is a good way to build children's fluency

①Do you yawn? There are about 20 reasons that scientists think are possible for yawning after research. They do not know exactly why yawning happens, but they do know many facts about yawning.

②We know that everyone yawns in the same way. First you open your mouth slowly. Your mouth stays open for about five seconds. You take in a lot of air and then push it out. Then you quickly close your mouth. We also know that yawning is contagious. When you see someone yawn, you yawn, too.

③Many people say they yawn because they are bored or tired. That might be true. People do often yawn before they sleep and after they wake up. However, we know that people also yawn when they are excited or nervous. Olympic runners, for example, often yawn before a race. Why is that? In 2007, scientists found that a yawn can help a warm brain cool down.

④Some scientists believe that yawning makes you notice things more quickly. When you yawn, you breathe deeply. You also stretch(强化)muscles(肌肉)in your face, mouth, and neck. Your eardrums stretch, too. Maybe this helps you to be quicker to notice things. That's why we yawn.

⑤In some countries, people think yawning is not nice. People put their hands over their mouths to cover a yawn. In other countries, people think yawning is healthy. They think that opening the mouth very big can let good things in. When they breathe out, they think that bad things go out of the body with the air.

⑥Scientists do not spend much time studying yawning. That is probably because yawning does not hurt. It is just something we do.
