Many students think that learning a new language is very difficult. But if your brain (大脑) is only the same size as a bird's, you will know how difficult it is to learn English. That is what some birds can do.

Many birds can copy (模仿) the sounds of language. A type of African parrot is very good at doing this. This kind of parrot has grey feathers and people say they are clever.

Every December in London, the National Cage and Aviary Bird Show tries to find the best "talking" bird in the world. One bird named Prudle stood out (突出) among the " talking birds"  by winning this prize every year from 1965 to 1977. In 1958, somebody took Prudle from his nest in Uganda, and then sold it to a woman named Iris Frost. She then took care of him at her home in Seaford, England. Before he died in 1994, aged 35, Prudle knew almost 800 words in English. Prudle was also the oldest bird in the world that lived in a cage.

Another parrot named Puck was tested in 1993. It turned out that Puck knew even more words than Prudle. Puck knew more than 1,700 English words. In the 2003 Guinness Book of World Records, Puck was listed as knowing more words than any other bird in the world.

Babies don't learn to talk just from hearing sounds. They are lip (嘴唇) readers too. It happens during the period when a baby's babbling (咿呀声) slowly changes from unclear voices into that first "mama" or "dada". The babies have to find out how to shape their lips to make the sounds they are hearing, according to developmental psychologist David Lewkowicz of Florida Atlantic University, who led the study.

Clearly it doesn't take them too long to understand the movements that match basic sounds. By their first birthdays, babies start changing back to look you in the eye again. It offers more clues that quality face-time with babies is very important for speech development more than, say, turning on the latest baby DVD. 

But Lewkowicz went a step further. He and his student Amy Hansen Tift tested nearly 180 babies, groups of them at ages 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 months. How? They showed videos of a woman speaking in English or French to babies of English speakers. They found that when the speaker used English, the 4-month-old babies gazed (凝视) mostly into her eyes. The 6-month-old babies spent equal amounts (数量) of time looking at the eyes and the mouth. The 8-month-old babies and 10-month-old babies studied mostly the mouth. At 12 months, attention started changing back toward the speaker's eyes.

But what happened when these babies are used to English heard French? The 12-month-old babies studied the mouth longer, just like younger babies. They needed the extra information to understand the new sounds. That fits with research into bilingualism (双语) that shows babies' brains adjust (调整) themselves to tell the differences between the sounds of their first language over other languages in the first year of life.

The continued lip reading shows the l-year-old babies clearly still are fit for learning. Babies are so hard to study, says Duke University cognitive scientist Greg Appelbaum, who found the research so fantastic that he wants to know more.

How to Ask Someone to Hang Out

Asking someone to hang out can feel like a big step at the start of a new friendship. It may be a classmate or someone you met at a party. Here are our best tips to help you ask him or her to hang out.

Ask in an accidental way. If you have been planning to ask them for a while, take a breath and use your daily conversational tone(语气). {#blank#}1{#/blank#}. So when you ask them to hang out, it doesn't turn out to be embarrassing.

{#blank#}2{#/blank#}. You may have a hard time asking someone to hang out without a good reason. If you're asking someone you know you have a common interest with, use that to invite. Tell them it would be fun to do the activity together.

Be confident that they will say yes. It's no good to ask someone to hang out if you tell yourself they won't want to. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}. If you are confident in yourself, the person will be more open when you ask directly.

{#blank#}4{#/blank#}. When you ask someone to hang out, make sure you have a few dates in mind when you know you're free. Offer those dates to the person and ask if they are free during any of those dates.

Invite someone to go wherever you're going. Anytime you're about to do something and you see someone you want to hang out with, ask them to join you. Since you are going to do it no matter what they say, it's not a big deal if they turn you down.

Even though it feels scary at first, follow the tips above and it will not be stressful to let someone know that you'd like to hang out in the future.

There are many reasons why I encourage people to travel, and I know that the experiences will make one a better person. 

I remember when I was travelling, I began to know the world better. The world is not just about me, my small town and home. Although you will meet different people from all over the world, you will realise that people are similar in their dreams, hopes and feelings. Enjoy exploring(探索) the different cultures, and you will also find that people are different in some of the things they do and how they live. Once you understand their ways, it won't be strange or scary. Often we read stories about other cultures in books. Only when we visit their areas do we find that those stories are sometimes wrong. 

One thing you may find out is that there are problems all over the world. We can't just send money to these areas and hope that will help them out. The world should get involved (参加) and help wherever there are problems. People everywhere should be given a chance. It is so easy to ignore(忽视) this if one does not travel and explore. One can look around and see that so many people have many challenges worse than his or hers. One can realise that sometimes his or her biggest problems are not that big after all. 

On your journey you will meet lots of new friends. Talking to strangers and listening to their lives are a great way to spend your time. You will certainly be more confident after having to cope with____problems and make many decisions along the way. 

When you travel, you have to be on your own in some situations. You will surprise yourself by how well you can do that. All your special experiences can make an interesting book to read. It will be filled with all your adventures and special memories. 

Travelling around and seeing so much happening in the world around us are a wonderful experience. If we could all just travel a little more and share our experiences, we would all be better people and the world would be a better place. 

There are various reasons why people travel. Some tourists go to see battlefields or other historic remains. Others are looking for culture, or simply want to have their pictures taken in front of famous places. Most European tourists are looking for a sunny beach to lie on. 

Northern Europeans are willing to pay a lot of money for the sun because they have so little of it. People of cities like London, Copenhagen and Amsterdam spend much of their winter in the dark because the days are so short, and much of the rest of the year in the rain. This is the reason why the Mediterranean (地中海) has always attracted them. Every summer many people travel to Mediterranean resorts (度假胜地) and beaches for their vacation. They all come for the same reason: the sun!

The huge crowds mean lots of money for the economy of Mediterranean countries. Italy's 30, 000 hotels are booked without a break every summer. And 13 million people camp on French beaches, parks and roadsides. About 37 million tourists visit there yearly, or one tourist for each person living in Spain. 

But there are signs that the area is getting more tourism than it can deal with. The Mediterranean is already one of the most polluted seas on earth. None of these, however, is ruining(毁掉) anyone's fun. Obviously, they don't go there for clean water. They allow traffic jams and seem to like crowded beaches. They don't even mind the pollution. No matter how dirty the water is, the coastline still looks beautiful. And as long as the sun shines, it's still better than sitting in the cold rain in Berlin, London, or Oslo.
