Chinese are very generous in educating their children. Not caring about the money, parents often send their children to the best schools or even abroad to England, the United States and Australia. They also want their children to take extra-course activities such as musical instrument learning or ballet classes, or other classes. They think these will give them a good future. The Chinese believe that the more expensive an education is, the better it is. So parents will spend much unreasonable money on education. Even poor parents will buy a computer for their son or daughter.
However, most parents don't understand that the best early education they can give their children is usually very cheap.
Parents can see that their children are very good in some areas while poor in others. Parents can also see some children are good at these skills and others do well in others. Most parents don't realize that today's children lack self-respect and self-confidence.
The problem is that parents are only educating their children on how to take tests and how to study well, but parents are not teaching them the most important skills that they need are to be confident, happy and clever.
Parents can achieve this by teaching skills like cooking, sewing and doing other housework. Teaching a child to cook will improve many of the skills that he will need later in life. Cooking needs patience and time. It is an enjoyable but difficult experience. A good cook always tries to improve his cooking, so he will learn to work hard and finish his job successfully. His result, a well-cooked dinner, will give him much satisfaction and lots of self-confidence.
Some old machines, such as a broken radio or TV set that you give your child to play with, will make him curious(好奇的) and improve his interest. He will spend hours looking at them, trying to fix them. Your child might become an engineer when he grows up. These activities are not only teaching a child to read a book, but rather to think, to use his mind. And that is more important.

This is a story of a man who works in my factory. I have seen him for years, but I didn't know him very well. He was a little bit weird (怪异的). He always wore an old red hat and carried a rubbish bag. He seemed to have no friend, and was always alone. He usually spent his break time and his lunchtime walking around in the factory and collecting used tins (金属罐). Maybe he was too poor, I guess. But I didn't care much about him.

One day, I was fixing one of the broken machines in the factory when this "tin man" came with his bag. As usual, he picked up the tins, which were all around the place. My manager was standing there, watching me.

When I finished my job, I heard my manager ask the "tin man" about what he was going to do with those tins he had collected. I never even thought about this kind of question, because I always assumed that "tin man" would take those tins to the recycling center.

Unexpectedly, the "tin man" answered, "I will give these tins to my neighbor. He has been ill for many years and cannot work. He is too poor to buy daily bread now."

I was so shocked to hear that, so I asked him, "You mean you collect all those tins just to help your neighbor?"

"I know this does not help much," he said. "But I give everything to him, because he cannot work. He needs help."

It was the most beautiful moment in my life. We are all able to help others no matter we are rich or poor. It has made me feel humble (谦卑的) every day since then.

①Have you ever thought about what's more important, looking fashionable or feeling comfortable? You might have noticed many people choosing style over comfort and some even go to extremes (极端) to follow fashion. But we should remember: being fashionable isn't everything. It's more important to be healthy.

②Some people believe that they need to be a certain size to look good. So, they start extreme diets (日常饮食) that are not good for their health. They might not eat meals or eat too little, which can make them feel sick. Is it a healthy way to live?

③Also, many girls wear shoes with very high heels. They might think high heels make them look taller. But these shoes can actually hurt their feet and make it hard to walk comfortably, and it can increase risks of falls. Some even wear tight (紧的) clothes that influence blood circulation (循环), making it hard to breathe. Should we put fashion over comfort and physical health?

④Besides, some boys and girls spend a lot of time and money changing their hair color. The material they use is usually harmful to their health. To make their hair straight or curly, they also use tools that are hot enough to burn their hair. But using these tools too often or at very high temperatures can make the hair dry or even burnt. Is it really worth it to risk our health, spending so much time and money?

⑤So, let's rethink what's really important. Is it fashion or is it our well-being? Clothes or hairstyles don't tell us anything about a person's character. Instead of spending a lot of time choosing clothes, we could use that time to do fun things with friends. And instead of following extreme diets, let's eat properly and exercise regularly. Remember, your worth is not decided by your appearance, but by who you are as a person.

"Shylock!" yelled Antonio. "Are you going to lend us the money or not? Answer me!"

Shylock answered him slowly. "Do you remember all of those times that you insulted(侮辱) me in a loud voice that everyone could hear? You even called me a dog. And now you want to borrow money from me, a dog!"

"Look! I'm not asking you a favour. You can charge me any interest(利息) you want. I don't mind. My ships will arrive any day now."

"Alright, Antonio. I'm willing to lend you the money. I won't even charge you any interest. Just pay me back on time."

Antonio couldn't believe his ears. ""

"I said you didn't know me. I will help you. I won't even charge you a single ducat(达克特, 以前欧洲的一种钱币). However, there is something I'm worried about. What if you don't pay me back?"

"Don't worry, Shylock. I' ll pay you back."

"Well, I need some kind of a guarantee, don't I? Three thousand ducats is a lot of money. If you don't pay me back on time, I want a pound of flesh(肉). I' ll take a pound of flesh from any part of your body."

Antonio didn't like what Shylock said. "No. I'd rather pay some interest if I'm late on the payment."

"I'm afraid that's no good," said Shylock as he laughed. "Do you think I'd take money from another moneylender? Besides, this agreement is only a joke! Do you think that any lawyer or judge would believe me? Would they really believe that I want a pound of your flesh? You don't have to worry about anything!"

Antonio agreed to the conditions. They went to a lawyer and signed an agreement.
