Because of the COVID -19, many zoos are having hard time. Luckily, there are new ways for them\ to raise money, such as having animal shows online, selling cultural products (文化产品), making animal stars and adopting animals online (云认养) .

For Nanjing Hongshan Forest Zoo, online adoption is one of the ways to get help to getthrough hard times. People from all over the world can pay to adopt their favourite animals. The zoo will use the money to buy food for its animals and pay for their medical care. If someone adopts animal, they can get a certificate(证书) and learn about the animal's daily life online. They can go to the zoo for free, have the chance to feed the animal and clean its living space.

Animals like elephants, golden monkeys, koalas and tigers are all on the adoptioa list. Each animal has its own introduction. You can see its photo and know about its age and living baits(生活习惯).

Adopting animals online makes people think about how a zoo works. Modern zoos are no longer places for visitors to see animals but places to teach people how to protect animals.

It's important for us to keep healthy. Li Ming gives us a good example. Meals was the time when family members got together. But now fast food and quick meals are threatening(威胁) such family get-togethers. Facing such a situation (情况), Li Ming has a good idea. Though his parents often go to work at night, he also eats the healthiest food. He learns to cook himself.

In China, it is said that the egg can be set upright on the first day of Start of Spring. It is believed that if someone can erect the egg on the first day of Start of Spring, he will have good luck in the future. 

◆   Making a Spring Ox (做春牛)

This custom in Shaanxi is practiced right before the Start of Spring. The officers ask some artists to build an ox with bamboo, wood, paper and paint. When the paper ox is ready, people will worship (敬神) it and hope for a harvest year. 

◆   Posting spring calligraphy and paintings (张贴春季字画)

The custom of posting calligraphy and paintings on one's door in the spring was first celebrated during the Tang Dynasty (618-907). People would do so to welcome spring and pray for good luck on the first day of Start of Spring.

In most parts of the world, many students help their schools make less pollution.  They join the Environment Club.  In the club, people work together to protect the environment. 

No-rubbish lunches.  How much do you throw after lunch? The Environment Club asks students to bring their lunches in bags that can be recycled.  The students try their best to make less rubbish. 

No-car days.  No-car days were started by 35 cities in France on 22nd September, 1998.  They were started to protect the environment.  By now, more than 1,000 cities around the world have had a no-car day.  In China, more and more people are taking part in the activity.  On a no-car day, nobody comes to school in a car—not the students and not the teachers! Cars give pollution to our air, so remember: Walk, jump, bike or run! Use your legs! It's lots of fun!

Turn off water! Do you know that some broken toilets could waste 20 to 40 ml of water an hour? In a year, that will fill a small river! In the Environment Club, the members mend those broken toilets. 

We have only one Earth.  Let's work hard together to make our world cleaner and more beautiful. 

A visit to the old city of Petra in Jordan is an amazing experience (奇妙的经历). Around the city, there are mountains with many pink rocks (岩石). To get to the mountains, tourists walk for over a kilometre through a narrow hole (狭窄的洞) in the rock. Then they come to a large building in the side of a cliff (悬崖). Petra has many of these beautiful rock- cut buildings, and they make the city famous. 

Two thousand years ago, Petra was a busy and noisy place. People came from far away to buy and sell in the market places. Later, the city became rich. At one time, more than 30, 000 people lived there. But the pink rocks were not as safe as they looked. Earthquakes (地震) made many of the buildings fall down. As the year went by, people couldn't come and live there any more. Finally, the world forgot the city of Petra. 

In 1812, a Swiss traveller called Johann Burckhardt heard about the lost city. Local people told him that it was in the mountains, and someone took him there. When Burckhardt went back to Europe, he wrote about Petra and people started visiting the city. 

▲  More than a million tourists go there every year. People sell postcards and cold drinks there. There are museums, shops and restaurants, but nobody lives there. At night, the old city is quiet again.
