Abdul Sadiq, an Afghanistan's only professional cyclist, began by training his daughter. And when she competed successfully abroad, he set up the team. It is the world's most unlikely sporting team, because the sport breaks taboos in a country where in many traditional communities, women are not allowed out of the house.

    The head coach faces frequent threats and the girls' families do not always approve "If it's not their fathers trying to stop them, it's a brother or uncle."

    Two members of the team, Massouma, 18, and Zarab, 17, are sisters. Their father and their brothers approve, but they know that their uncles complain to their father. "They will never come in front of us to say ‘Why are you cycling?', but they say bad words to our father," she said. His team have, however, competed and won regionally against Bangladesh and Pakistan.

    "We want to go cycling because we want to be heroes one day," said 16-year-old Jella, one of the latest riders. In one of the mildest and driest winters for many years, training has gone on without stopping. And next spring, the girls will go up into the mountains. "We say that women should not sit at home, they need to come out and do sports," said Abdul Sadiq, And 18- year-old Zainab said she wished that she could just go cycling alone on the street one day. "It's my ambition, and I hope that one day girls will be allowed to go cycling on the streets, not having a coach, or anyone with them, and they will not have problems," she said.

Mr Johnson lived in a village. He had a big farm and five {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(man) worked for him. He had lots of money but hoped to become much {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(rich). He tried to get everything and was very unkind to his workers so no one liked him.

One day, it rained {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (heavy). Mr Johnson went to his field to see if his workers were still working. While he {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(walk) on the bridge, he saw a beautiful box in the river. He was sure there was something expensive in it. Before {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(take) off his clothes, he jumped into the water. {#blank#}6{#/blank#}it was difficult for him to swim and he could not reach the box. So the water almost washed him away. He caught {#blank#}7{#/blank#}piece of wood in the river and shouted, "Help! Help!"

The workers ran to the river quickly and found Mr Johnson, but no one wanted to save him. His wife said, "We have been married {#blank#}8{#/blank#}nearly thirty years. I can't lose him. I'll give twenty dollars to the man who can save

A young man jumped into the river and wanted to save Mr Johnson. "The young man will save you," said his wife. "We should give him twenty dollars, I think."

"I don't think so," said Mr Johnson. "I will be half dead {#blank#}10{#/blank#}I am pulled out of the river, so I can only give him ten dollars!"

When my daughter was in primary school, she brought home four small twigs(细枝) from school to plant. None of them looked very strong and lively. But with hope for the future, I planted them somewhere in our backyard which could give them enough sunlight. Over the years, because of the poor soil(土壤), three of them died. Only one lived at last.

It grew crooked(不直的) and very slowly. In fact, it looked more like a fat bush than a tree. Later, I noticed that it was starting to die. The branches(树枝) were becoming bare. Only the top third of the tree was still green. I did my best to save it by feeding it a lot of fertilizer, but it didn't work.

Later one morning, I went out and looked at it again. I was thinking if it would be better to just cut it down. It would make the yard look cleaner. As I walked over to take a closer look at it, however, I noticed something moving within the leaves. It was a bird patiently building a nest in the topmost branches. I smiled when I looked at it. I thought maybe this old tree was still useful. It might not be healthy or pretty, but it was still giving a bird a home.

This tree let me know that all of our lives have a purpose. It doesn't matter if we are young and strong or old and sickly. Until our last breath, we have things to do, love to give, and joy to share. We can help to make this world a better and more beautiful place.

A 5-year-old boy named Jack did something surprising. He set up a lemonade stand to help the people hit by the big fires in Maui, Hawaii.

 Hearing his parents talking about the fires on the news, Jack felt really sad. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} . He got the idea of starting a lemonade stand and giving all the money to the people who lost their homes in the fires.

 His mum, Polly, thought Jack might raise at most $100. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} . The stand raised$8,000 in just one day! Lemonade sold for one dollar each cup, but most people gave much more.
