At eight o' clock last Sunday morning, I was sitting on the No. 101 bus to go to the zoo when I suddenly saw an old man lying on the side of the street. I told the driver 1 it. For several years now, Maria Keller, a teenager from Minneapolis, Minnesota, has been trying to change that fact.

When she was 8 years old, Maria already loved reading. She also noticed that some of her classmates didn't read as much as she did. When she asked her mother why that was, her mother said that they might not be able to2 books. Maria had never thought of this. She couldn't believe that some children didn't have bedtime stories read to them, and she became3 to change this.

With her mother's help. Maria created anon-profit organization which is dedicated（致力于） to collecting and distributing books to children4 .

During the early stages of Read Indeed, Maria set the goal of collecting and distributing I million books by the time she was 18.

It didn't take long to reach that goal. Up till now, she has collected over 2.4 million books and has shipped them to many states and countries around the world.

She said, "I cannot live without books. As I continue my mission（使命）. I have learned that the number of kids who have no books is in the hundreds of millions. So I just can't5 . even after reaching my original goal of 1 million books."

She recently set a new goal:to distribute donations to kids in need in every state in the US, and every country in the world. She keeps records of her6 on a large map at the warehouse（仓库） where her books are stored and sorted.

It's 6:00 p. m. Kate's family are having dinner. There is rice, eggs, salads, strawberries and some vegetables like tomatoes, onions and carrots on the table. But Kate doesn't like vegetables. She doesn't want to eat them and puts her bowl away.

" Kate," says her father.

" Where are my hamburgers?" asks Kate.

" Don't think about them. We need to eat healthily," says Mom.

" How about some ice- cream, then?" asks Kate.

" Kate," Dad calls her name again. He thinks the dinner is nice.

 Kate takes a bite(咬一口) of the tomato and quickly spits(吐出) it back into the bowl.

" Kate! Room! Now!" says Dad. He doesn't like her bad eating habits.

 Kate runs to her room and cries, but she soon stops. Usually, her parents will get her some other food she likes if she doesn't eat dinner. So she waits(等待).

 At about 7:00 p. m., Mom tries to get Kate to eat some vegetables, but she says no.

 At 9:00 p. m., Kate wants to eat something, but her parents still don't give her anything to eat.

 At 10:00 p. m., Kate goes to the kitchen and sees some vegetables on the table. They don't look so bad. And you know what? They don't taste so bad, either.

 Kate learns that she should eat healthy food and live a healthy life.

One day in ancient Greece, King Hiero asked a crown maker to make him a golden crown. At first, he was very happy with it. 

"It's a nice crown, isn't it?" he asked his men. Later, 

However, he began to doubt that it was a real golden crown. "Is it made completely of gold?" he wondered. He sent it to Archimedes and asked him to find out the truth. 

"This problem seems difficult to solve. What should I do?" thought Archimedes. 

Archimedes was still thinking about this problem as he filled his bath with water. When he got into the bath, some water ran over. 

"That's it!" shouted Archimedes. "I know how to solve the king's problem!"

Archimedes went straight to the palace to see the king. First, he weighed the crown and asked the king for some gold of the same weight. 

Next, he put two pots into two big bowls and filled both pots with water. He put the gold into one pot, and some water ran into the bowl. Then he put the crown into the other pot. This time, even more water ran into the bowl. 

"Look at this, " said Archimedes to King Hiero. "A crown made completely of gold displaces less water than a crown made of gold and another metal. This crown displaced more water than gold of the same weight, so I'm certain that it's not completely made of gold. "

"The crown maker tricked me, didn't he? What a bad man he is!" shouted King Hiero. He then sent the crown maker to prison. 

A daughter graduated from college. Her father planned to teach her a 1 . He said to her," My darling, you have grown up. Now I'm considering 2 my car, and can you help me get a good price for it?" The daughter agreed. Then the father asked her to take the car to 3 places and then choose the best 4 .

The daughter told these 9 to her father. The father said," Don't be surprised. The value of the car is different in different places. Only the right place can give you the right value. Therefore, if you are not appreciated(赏识) by someone, do not be angry. It just means you are in the 10 place. You should move on and go to a better place where you can certainly go far."
