What did people do to communicate in ancient times? Here are some very interesting answers to this question.

Alphorns（阿尔卑斯长号角） were once used to communicate in the mountains in Switzerland. They are very long and they are very heavy, too. So, alphorns are hard work to blow. Then why use them? Well, they make a loud sound which travels much further than the human voice. Herdsmen（牧民） used them to call cows in the distance for milking. At sunset, alphorns were also used to send a message down to villagers that all was well. These days, they're mostly used as musical instruments.

The people of La Gomera, an island in Europe, have their own special way of sending messages from mountain to mountain. They use a whistled（口哨） language called el silbo, which comes from their language Spanish. Whistling can be heard within five kilorneters, which means it can be used across much greater distances than shouting. El silbo can be used for all kinds of messages, including greetings and announcements. El silbo is used a lot less than it used to be, but primary school students in La Gomera have to leave it.

Did you know it 's also possible to send messages without making a noise? This is called visual communication, and it includes the use of flags and even smoke. Long ago, soldiers along the Great Wall of China used smoke as a warning. If they noticed the enemy from their signal（信号） tower, they lit a smoky fire. When soldiers in other towers saw the smoke signal, they lit fires, too. In this way, messages about the enemy's arrival could travel as far as 800 km in just a few hours.

Korean Vacation

Last Monday, Soobin got a surprise text message from Klara. She is Soobin's German online friend. She was visiting Seoul（首尔）with her family!

Soobin replied. Soobin waited for Klara's reply and thought of things to do. 

Soobin was a little disappointed. She was also thinking of folk villages and pansori. Klara texted again. 

Soobin smiled. She was about to suggest Insadong. The class was fun. 

At lunch, Soobin suggested a bulgogi restaurant. 

"I'll introduce you to Korean food!"

When I was very young, people in our village lived by planting fruit trees. My grandparents always took me to the orchard (果园) on the hill. At that time, they had to carry water from the river at the foot of the hill. Even though we worked so hard, we had a hard life because there was little water.

One day, two young men from our government led a group of workers to our village. They learned about the difficulties we faced, and later, canals (水渠) and other projects (项目) began to be built in my village.

Almost all animals need to sleep, but some have special ways.

The albatross（信天翁）is one of the largest flying birds. They fly in the sky for months without getting to the ground. They can fly about 22,000 kilometers around the Earth in 46 days! They sometimes even sleep when they are flying.

A flamingo（火烈鸟） can sleep when standing on one leg. The standing leg always stays in the water. The other le g stays close to its body. Its head lies on its back.

Horses often sleep when standing up. If a horse lies down, it needs a long time to get up. A standing horse can escape more quickly when it sees dangerous things. And horses only need about three hours of sleep a day.

Giraffes sleep the shortest time. They sleep about 30 minutes a day, and 5 minutes at a time. They lie down when they sleep. They put their heads on their bodies or on the ground. What an interesting way of sleeping!

A few years ago, I went to Italy as an exchange student. Before leaving, I asked my mother what gifts I should take to the teachers and the classmates there. Mom said that the Chinese fan was a good choice, for China is praised as"the Fan Kingdom". I agreed completely, because it is more than a tool for cooling. And it's also an important part of Chinese culture. 

I went shopping and bought three kinds of Chinese fans. The first kind was the feather(羽毛) fan for the teachers, which was made of bird feathers. It was the symbol of Zhuge Liang, a very smart man in ancient China. The fans I bought for the girls were silk fans. They were also called"round silk fans". Fans of this kind were made of silk with paintings of beautiful women, birds or flowers. They were very popular with women of all ages. As for the boys, I picked the folding fans from Rongchang, a place in the west of Chongqing. The folding fans were made of paper and bamboo. There were great paintings and calligraphy(书法) on them. 

 At the welcome party in Italy, my new friends were all ____ to get the wonderful fans. And they were amazed at the stories and culture behind them. They were eager(渴望) to visit China and explore Chinese culture.
