Several years ago, the United Nations（the UN）issued（发行） a set of stamps celebrating poetry（诗歌）from around the world. The purpose was to show the important role poetry plays in shaping a nation's culture. For the Chinese stamp, the organization chose Li Bai's Thoughts on a Tranquil Night. For me, it was the perfect choice. I was moved by the feelings that everyone in the world could share: loneliness, homesickness and admiration for beauty and the wonders of nature. 

That poem was written more than 1, 300 years ago during the Tang dynasty. There were so many poets at that time. Li Bai seemed to be friends with most of them, including Gao Shi, Du Fu, Wang Changling and Meng Haoran. Those of you who have watched the film Chang'an probably know that, although being separated, these men knew each other's work and always tried to keep in touch. And, in a sense, they felt connected by a common goal—to do something useful for their country. 

Culture does serve the nation. It is the foundation（基础）on which a nation is built. It provides a nation with its values and spirits. The Chinese appreciate beauty, truth and goodness in their own culture as well as in other cultures. If they had lived during the same era, I believe that Li Bai and Shakespeare would have liked each other's poems. I can imagine them drinking, reading and talking about their poems. Shakespeare would have said, "Ah, yours is a lovely culture. I hope it lasts forever." And Li Bai would've said, "My wish for your culture is the same."

For most teenagers, the kitchen may be a mysterious(神秘的) place. But Flynn McGarry is already able to take charge of(掌管) a kitchen.

At the age of 15, he was already a well-known teenage chef in the US. He has opened his own dining club at home and works with some of the best restaurants in his country.

McGarry's love for cooking started at the age of 10. He practiced his knife skills after school and taught himself from books and the Internet. In his room, there are no video games, basketballs or movie posters, but pots, cutting boards and pans(平底锅).

When he was 11, McGarry's parents helped turn his bedroom into a monthly supper club called Eureka. Each month, he hosted his mother's friends and soon won the title of "culinary prodigy(烹饪神童)". Now, people pay $160(979 yuan) per person to eat at Eureka.

McGarry does not stick with just simple types of cuisine(菜肴). He likes creating interesting dishes. "I could take a carrot and raise it to this amazing level that you'd never think you're eating a carrot," he said. The New York Times described his meals as "creative enough to make an experienced chef inferior(逊色的)."

As for the future, McGarry dreams of being a Michelin-starred chef. He plans to open his own restaurant by 19 and make it, as he puts it, "the best restaurant in the world."

John is twelve years old. He had a bad cold and coughed (咳嗽) day and night. He went to see a doctor. The doctor gave him some cough medicine(药物).

 Last Saturday, we went to Yan' an Revolutionary Memorial Hall(延安革命纪念馆) with our teacher. We had great fun taking the bus and talking with our friends in such fi ne weather. It took us about half an hour to get there. We spent all day visiting there. I was excited to learn more about the history of this place.

 There are nine revolutionary memorial halls. Revolutionists (革命先辈) left a lot of important things there. So it is a very important revolutionary place. After listening to the guide, we knew a lot about the history and spirit (精神) of Yan' an. They are so great. I want to know more from this visit.

 In one of the halls, Ma Mei, my classmate, used her phone to take videos (视频) and photos of the old things. She wanted to show these videos to her parents. I also took some photos. I wanted to tell some stories to my younger sister, because I was really moved (感动) by Yan' an spirit. We live a happy life now because of these revolutionists, so we must show our thanks to them by studying hard for a more beautiful country.

A serious earthquake can be a terrible experience, and it is easy to forget safety rules in disorder(混乱). Fortunately, most earthquake safety rules are common sense, but if you forget everything, remember the following instructions: drop, cover, and hold on. Also, most of earthquake deaths happen after the earthquake, so remember that the danger does not end when the shaking does!

If you stay indoors during an earthquake, move away from unsupported areas and windows. Try to get into a doorway or another area of the building which is held up by strong beams(梁). Stay under a table or a desk only if it is very strong. Do not rush to lifts, because it is far safer to stay where you are. Cover your head with your arms around it and curl(蜷缩) into a ball, and wait for the shaking to stop. 

If you stay outdoors during an earthquake, move to an open area. Don't move to buildings, electric poles or other objects which may fall and hurt you during an earthquake. Protect your head and stay low to the ground till the shaking ends and it is safe to move. 

After an earthquake, many buildings are less strong, although they appear safe. If you stay indoors, move people from the building quickly and help the disabled or people who get hurt. Once outdoors, move away from the building so that if it falls down, you will not be hurt. Wait till public safety officials tell you that it is safe to stay indoors. By planning ahead and keeping calm during an earthquake, you can greatly increase your chances of survival without getting hurt.
