A poor farmer had a friend who was famous for the wonderful apple trees he grew.

    One day, his friend gave the farmer a young apple tree and told him to plant it.  The farmer was pleased with the gift, but he did not know where to plant it.

    He was afraid that if he planted the tree near the road, strangers would steal the fruit.  If he planted the tree in one of his fields, his neighbors would come at night and steal some of the apples.  If he planted the tree near his house, his children would take the fruit.  Finally he planted the tree in his wood.  But without sunlight and good soil(土壤), the tree soon died.

    Later the friend asked the farmer why he had planted the tree in such a poor place.  “What's the difference?” the farmer said angrily and then told what he had thought.

     “Yes,” said the friend, “but at least someone could have enjoyed the fruit.  Now you not only have robbed everyone of the fruit, but also you have destroyed (毁掉) a good apple tree! ”

    Do you think there is a ghost in the world? More than 20 years ago, a student jumped from the top of the clock tower in the University of Birmingham. He did this only because he failed his final exam.

    After his death, a superstition（迷信） began: Anyone who walks under the clock tower will have bad luck in his exam. Years later, students there still remembered the story of the tower. Although Birmingham is the second largest city in Britain, the university is green and quiet. The grass around the tower has been worn away by the feet of students who refuse to pass underneath the tower.

    The university had to pave（铺） extra paths, so students could walk to their classrooms without passing under the most terrible area. But, one day just before an important exam, a top student in the university walked under the clock tower because he was lost in thought. However, he got high marks in the exam the next day. Quickly students all knew about it. Then they realized that the most important thing is working hard.

    Whenever I go under the clock tower, I will tell myself, "Working hard is the key to success."

Long time ago, there was a king(国王) in England. He was kind but too lazy(懒惰) . He would do1 except(除了) eating and sleeping. Soon he became 2 and heavy. Later, he couldn't even move his body. He thought he was ill.3 no doctors in his country could help him.

To be honest, I didn't like my dad. My favourite {#blank#}1{#/blank#} instrument is the guitar. I used to play it for two hours after school. However, Dad asked me to finish homework and study for my {#blank#}2{#/blank#} as soon as I came home. I wanted to do {#blank#}3{#/blank#} work for the people in need. But Dad said, "It's not important for a student to do that. You shouldconsider how to improve your marks{#blank#}4{#/blank#} of paying attention to other things. " That was his thought, and also his {#blank#}5{#/blank#}   word. I really disagree with him but I don't know what should I do.
