Flow like the river of change

Little stream ran down from a high mountain through many villages and forests. Then it reached a desert.“I went through so many difficulties. I should have no problem crossing the desert," she thought. As she started, she found herself slowly disappearing into the sand. After many tries, she still failed. "Maybe I can't reach the ocean," she said sadly to herself.
At this time, a deep voice said, "If a breeze(微风)can cross the desert, so can a river." It was the voice of the desert. But the little stream answered, "That's because a breeze can fly, but I cannot.”
“That's because you can't give up what you are. Let yourself evaporate(蒸发)into the breeze, and it can take you across,” said the desert. "Give up what I am now? No! No!" The little stream could not accept this idea. "The breeze can carry the vapor(蒸汽)across the desert and let it leave as rain. The rain will form a river again," said the desert. "And whether you're a river or vapor, your nature never changes." Hearing this, the little stream went into the open arms of the breeze. It carried her to the next stage of her life.
The course of our lives is like the experience of the little stream. If you want to go through difficulties in your life to head for success, you should also change the way you are.

(4)、The little stream finally crossed the desert by _____.

Carol and Linda took a trip to San Francisco last July. They went there to visit Nick. Nick is a friend from their old neighborhood in Rome. He moved to San Francisco five years ago. They went there by train because they wanted to see more of the United States.

They arrived in San Francisco in the evening. Nick met them at the train station. They were so delighted to see him. He looked the same as before. They gave him a big hug (拥抱). The next day, they went sightseeing (观光). They saw the Golden Gate Bridge. They had lunch at Fisherman's Wharf. At Fisherman's Wharf, they saw the fishing boats come in. The next day, they visited the University of California at Berkeley. Nick teaches music there. Carol and Linda liked the school. They thought that it was very big and very beautiful.

They saw all of San Francisco before they left. Nick took them everywhere! They went back to New Orleans by plane because they didn't have time to go back by train. Nick was sad (伤心的) to see them go and they were sad to leave.

When you run into someone, will you say "Sorry"? When you get help from others, will you say "Thanks"? You will if you are polite.

A new study shows students seem to be less and less polite as they grow up and middle school students aren't as polite as primary school students. They start to swear(说脏话) and laugh at their classmates.

Wu Lin, 13, of Fujian, said, "More than 10 of 22 boys in my class often swear. We just swear for fun most of the time. But later, I understood that it was bad for me. So I stopped."

Li Fangfang, 13, Beijing, knows that laughing at others can really hurt. "Once, a classmate put up her hand to answer a question. But she didn't give the right answer. Then some classmates laughed at her," Li said. "From that day on, she never put up her hand. Those laughing kids hurt her a lot."

"Impoliteness comes from students' growing pains(痛苦)," said Wang Yamin, a teacher of a university. "Some middle school students become impolite because their classmates or parents do things that way. They think it's cool and funny. But our people are famous for politeness. Every student should speak and do things politely to respect (尊敬) others and let others respect you."

I am Alice. My sister and I spent our last summer holidays with our uncle who is a   geologist(地质学家) and loves to collect stones.

One day he bought us two backpacks and asked us to go to the mountain with him. We walked the whole day. Every now and then he put stones in our backpacks. To our surprise, he also took some stones out from them. But we thought he had just found better stones.

When we returned to the house, we were very tired. The backpacks were so heavy that we felt relief(轻松) when we took them off. Yet our uncle's backpack was half empty.

" Why did you give us so many stones?" we asked.

"I didn't. You did." he said." You didn't know it, but I gave you a little attitude(态度) test today.I listened to every word you said. Whenever you were complaining(抱怨),I added a stone to your backpacks. Every time you talked about something with positive(积极的) thinking, I took out a stone. And now look at your backpacks."

Our backpacks were full of stones.

" Your negative(消极的) thoughts are just like stones. You carry them____in your mind just like those stones in your backpacks. The more negative thoughts you have, the heavier your mind will be." said our uncle.

With great love, our uncle taught us one of the most important lessons in life— the power(力量) of the attitude.
