How to Remember What You Read

    Reading is important. But the next step is making sure that you remember what you've read!  you may have just read the text. But the ideas, concepts and images(形象)may fly right out of your head. Here are a few tricks for remembering what you read.

    If the plot, characters, or word usage is confusing for you, you likely won't be able to remember what you read. It's a bit like reading a foreign language. If you don't understand what you're reading, how would you remember it? But there are a few things you can do... Use a dictionary; look up the difficult words.

    Are you connected?

    Does a character remind you of a friend? Does the setting make you want to visit the place? Does the book inspire you and make you want to read more? With some books, you may feel a connection right away.  How willing are you to make the connections happen?

    Read it; hear it; be it!

    Read the lines. Then, speak them out loud. And, put some character into the words. When he was writing his novels, Charles Dickens would act out the parts of the characters. He'd make faces in the mirror and change his voice for each character.

    How often do you read?

    If you read frequently, you'll likely have an easier time with remembering what you're reading and what you've read.  As you make reading a regular part of your life, you'll make more connections, stay more focused and understand the text better. You'll learn to enjoy literature- as you remember what you read!

A. Are you confused?

B. Practice makes perfect.

C. What's your motivation?

D. Memory is sometimes a tricky thing.

E. Marking helps you remember what you read.

F. But other books require a bit more work on your part.

G. You can do the same thing when you are reading the text!

    The most successful people all have certain habits in their daily routines. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}Forming a new good habit can be a struggle, but it is well worth the effort. Here are the four steps you can follow to form good habits.

    Set your goal. Before you can begin to work on your new habit, it is worthwhile to consider your goal. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}Make sure that your goal is specific, measurable and realistic to increase your chances of success.

After you have set your goal and worked out all of the specifics of achieving that goal, identify a habit that is part of achieving that goal. Consider what good habit would help you accomplish that goal.

    Consider your motivation. Once you have identified your goal and the new habit you need to accomplish this goal, take some time to consider your motivation. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}Good motivation can be the difference between success and failure in terms of forming a new habit. So take your time to consider your motivation.

    Give yourself time. Forming a new habit can take a long time. Some people can form a new habit in as little as a few weeks, while other people will take several months. As you work to form your new habit, just keep in mind that it may be a while before it comes true. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

    For some people, choosing which sports to play throughout high school is hard because they have never really played an organized sport before and aren't sure what they'll enjoy most.{#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    {#blank#}2{#/blank#} If you're great at basketball but would rather play football because you think it's more fun, then give it a go (just make sure it's coot with morn and dad).

    Sports are meant to be fun.{#blank#}3{#/blank#} What's the worst that can happen? If you get cut, you can always try another sport. And sports like track don't typically cut participants from the team. You can still participate even if you're not in the team for the competition.

    Some sports, like basketball or baseball, require every person on the field to be working well together.{#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    Sports like tennis, track and field, swimming, gymnastics, and wrestling are all sports where individual performances are tallied(计分)into team scores.{#blank#}5{#/blank#} However, for the most part it's possible to win a solo event in these sports and still have your team lose or vice-versa(反之亦然).

    No one knows you better than you do. Maybe you enjoy the spotlight. Maybe you get annoyed by the way teammates act. Luckily, there are many individualized sports to choose from.

A.Many people are attracted to team sports.

B.Besides swimming, try fishing, sailing, skiing, and surfing.

C.Of course there are exceptions, like relays in track and swimming.

D.For others it's tough because their friends don't like to play the same sports.

E.No matter what your problem is, you have to make the decision that is best for you.

F.If there is a sport you really enjoy but you aren't sure if you can make the team, try out anyway.

G.Sure, certain people perform much better than others, but superstars don't necessarily make a good team!

    I think the majority of people would agree that it's unhealthy to live in the past. After all, we're all familiar with the new age philosophy, “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift{#blank#}1{#/blank#}Living in the past holds us back from being able to enjoy the present moment. But are there any benefits of revisiting a previous time? Actually, yes. The past has several advantages:

     Learning from our mistakes: We all know that poor choices can be some of life's greatest teachers{#blank#}2{#/blank#}

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#}By revisiting an unfavorable event from our past, we can often view it from a different perspective as time has passed. Being older and wiser, we are now able to reevaluate the experience and gain deeper insights and understandings of what happened and why, and how it has impacted us since. What once scarred us can now be healed through a newly-found awareness and no longer be a negative force in our lives.

    Motivated by earlier successes{#blank#}4{#/blank#}Other times life has been difficult. Remembering the past when we were at our best can help motivate us out of our current slump(低谷) and put us back on track for success. Use your past successes to propel(推动) you on to newer and greater things.

    While it's evident that revisiting the past has several advantages, there is a warning. Just like an amusement park, it's fine to visit but you cannot stay there forever. At some point, the park closes and all visitors are asked to leave. Enjoy the past when necessary but don't always stay there. Use it for living in the present and planning for the future{#blank#}5{#/blank#}

A. Moving beyond

B. That's why it's called the present

C. In that way, it will serve you well

D. See the mistakes as a step on the road to a solution

E. There are times when we have all enjoyed success on a variety of levels

F. Recalling times when we made mistakes can help us make better future decisions

G. So, failure is the mother of success

    While it is impossible to live completely free of stress, it is possible to prevent stress as well as reduce its effect when it can't be avoided. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    Try physical activity.

    {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Running, walking, playing tennis, and working in your garden are just some of the activities you might try.

    Make time for yourself.

    Arrange time for both work and fun. Don't forget, play can be just as important as your overall well-being as work. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Go window-shopping or work on a hobby. Allow yourself at least a half hour each day to do something you enjoy.

    Take care of yourself.

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#}If you easily get angry and can't sleep well enough, or if you're not eating properly, it will be more likely that you will fall into stressful situations. If stress repeatedly keeps you from sleeping, you should go to see a doctor.

    {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

    Stress can result from disorganization and a feeling that "there's so much to do, not enough time". Trying to take care of everything at once can be too much for you and as a result, you may not achieve anything. Instead, make a list of everything you have to do, than do one thing at a time, checking off each task as it is completed. Set out to do the most important task first.
